QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ May 28, 2006 -> 10:59 AM) Think Jermaine Dye: Pre-All Star Break 19 HR, 45 RBI, .270/.331/.528/.860 Dye struggled last year but it was only for the first month of the season, he put up a .933 OPS in May and actually ended up having a better first half than second half.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ May 28, 2006 -> 10:54 AM) When you play for the f***ing Marlins, it's hard to get wins. Unless you play the Cubs. You can still manage to pitch well, it's not even about his stats (especially wins), he's just pitched like s*** this year and has shown in the past that he's an incredibly inconsistent pitcher. *cough*fidritch*cough*

Hey, what do you ya know? Please, never mention Darin Erstad's name ever again in connection with the White Sox: The guy could be out for the year, woohoo $8.5M for a guy with serious ankle problems!

QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ May 28, 2006 -> 10:50 AM) Ozzie represents himself, his family, his country of Venezuela, the WhiteSox organization and alot of former Sox players & coaches with his words....thats all....is it ok for a 11 year old sox fan to yell the same obscenities aimed at the sox dugout for poor play & good games? i dont think so! Did you just compare some 11 year old kid in the stands to the manager of the team? Wow, that makes total sense.
-
QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ May 28, 2006 -> 10:34 AM) IMO Ozzie needs to be reprimanded for his obscenity laced tired yesterday. He definitely needs to apologize!! I will be surprised if he isnt fined by the organization. What is he thinking with all the obscenity? I dont have children but if I did.....well I would be pretty disappointed. Ozzie is in a leadership position in more ways than one...he must be reminded of it. Have you ever heard the guy talk before? Every other word out of his mouth is "horse s***". He's not going to appologize or fined and he definately should be forced to do either. His tirade yesterday was justified and honest, you can not censor Ozzie. This is hardly the first time he's talked like this.

QUOTE(Disco72 @ May 28, 2006 -> 10:25 AM) One point that was mentioned prominently in the article but not as much in this thread is that Ozzie wants BA to have better at-bats, not necessarily that he has to start producing right now. I think the "send down to AAA" threat is to get his head out of his butt and start being a "grinder" at the plate. Ozzie said he'd stick by him if he played great defense, but giving away at-bats is never acceptable to a guy like Ozzie. As for Uribe, last year he hit .225 in May and .238 in June, so while his current funk is bad, it's not all that unexpected. He'll heat up just as he's done every year. Uribe hit .167 in April this year, that's over 50 points lower than he's ever hit in any given month of his career, he has shown no signs of snapping out of this funk, I don't remember the last time he had a quality AB. For whatever reason, Anderson has been the scapgoat this season when the real problem out of the postion players has been Uribe. He's currently one of the worst players in baseball but for whatever reason you really don't hear his name brought up.

Hey, remember how I mentioned John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander before when refering to Zumaya. Plug in BMac where Zumaya's name is and you have the same situation. Dontrelle is not that good.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 28, 2006 -> 09:02 AM) Not if he keeps swinging for the fences. Both he and Anderson have awful approaches at the plate right now. Right now Andeson's approach is so much better than Uribe's, it's not even funny. Atleast Brian is walking, his OBP is currently over 100 points higher than his batting average meaning he's not hitting but he is getting on base. Uribe is swinging at everything, attempting to hit it 500 feet and either striking out because of it or popping out to the SS. Atleast one of them is walking every once in a while. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ May 28, 2006 -> 09:57 AM) Garland/Uribe for Tejada? GARLAND CAN NOT BE TRADED THIS SEASON.

QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ May 28, 2006 -> 08:48 AM) Anderson needs to have some success -- somewhere. A month at Charlotte might remind him that once upon a time he could actually hit the ball. I'm all for dumping Gload, too. There are a few guys at Charlotte who deserve a look. I can't think of a single person currently in Charlotte who would have any value to this team right now. Maybe you could give me a name or two.

QUOTE(Friend of Nordhagen @ May 28, 2006 -> 01:07 AM) Gentlemen, gentlemen . . . So much hatred of these fine young men who patrolling centerfield throughout baseball. Kalapse, my man, I've said it: if Anderson hits .210, he's my guy. And I'm willing to give him more time, too. But by the middle of July, if our friend from Tucson is hitting .165, he cannot -- and will not -- be this team's centerfielder. I love the guy, okay? I think he's going to be a good player. But that's not going to cut it. Not for me and not for Kenneth Williams. So, here we go. Who's your centerfielder for our 2006 World Series team? Name a guy. If you're all down on Erstad -- and believe me, I understand why -- please note that he won't be making $9 million for the Chicago American League ball club. He'll make 1/3 of that, at most -- because he'll be here for about 2 months. And that's assuming that we pay all of his salary. But, please, please, please, don't give me this garbage about how these aren't the guys -- because if it's not Brian Anderson, whoever it is is not on this roster right now. And he's not in Charlotte, North Carolina either. And -- regarding Finley -- all I ever said about Finley is that he was a guy to watch. The Giants may stay in it. They may not. They were under .500 for a lot of this season so far and got hot. I have no idea how that division will shake out. So, why don't we just see where we are in a bit, eh? I'd rather see Jerry Owens or Rob Mackowiak out there everyday in CF before Darin Erstad. That's right, Jerry Owens, the guy isn't even a CF and I'd take him over Erstad. I'm giving Brian Anderson 200 ABs before I replace him. By that time the market for CF will have revealed itself for what it is and we'll have a legitimate idea of who's out there and available for trade. .It's still too early right now to be looking at possible trades
-
QUOTE(Friend of Nordhagen @ May 28, 2006 -> 12:41 AM) Gang, I said it in the game thread (which was split into the CF thread), and I'll say it here. Kenny Williams is going to be looking at other solutions in centerfield, and some of them will be lower cost, like . . . ahem . . . Erstad, Pierre and Finley. They're "middle" solutions -- in a walk year, don't cost a ton, can hit enough to justify hitting 8th or 9th, and will catch the ball (even if, as in the case of Pierre, they can't throw the damn thing) until the 7th inning. And that's when Brian Anderson will be in the game. And, by the way, for those who doubt that Erstad possibility, remember two things: Gload's on this roster because he can play first base. So can Erstad. In that scenario, Anderson stays here and can play any outfield position as a back-up. And second, Ken Williams loves the guy (Erstad). Always has. And when Kenny loves you -- when he thinks you're a grinder -- Kenny loves you forever. And he'll do what he can to make you a member of the Chicago White Sox. Please, please, please stop bringing up those horrible players. Give me Anderson's superb defense over any kind of lackluster offense those guys will bring you. Erstad is NOT I repeat NOT a possibility, I mean the guy is currently on the DL and has been for a f***ing month, hell he might just retire instead of even bothering with a comback. OLD, EXPENSIVE, INJURED and BAD is not the type of player the Sox will be looking at to replace their 23 year old, 300K, healthy rookie who plays gold glove caliber defense. If Steve Finley is so damn good then why exactly would the Giants be trading him here? They're still very much in the thick of things and probably will be all year long, makes no damn sense. As for Pierre, his defense alone is bad enough to end the conversation right there. Don't mention the fact that BA currently has a higher OBP than he does, hell Brian leads him in every damn stat category except batting average, runs and stolen bases. Brian currently has 104 ABs this year, why don't we actually give him a chance before acquiring some s*** CF to replace him? His defense alone makes the team better, he has played a large part in keeping the pitchers ERAs down and he should be given a bit more of a chance because of it.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 28, 2006 -> 12:03 AM) EDIT: Sprague was a rookie in '93? Man I thought he was older than that. Well, he did retire at the ripe old age of 33.
-
Oh yeah, also the '93 Blue Jays had Ed Sprague start as a rookie. QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 28, 2006 -> 12:02 AM) That was a heck of a week. Well, he did play a part in nearly killing Greg Zaun.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 27, 2006 -> 11:53 PM) Well other than Miguel Cabrera on the 2003 Marlins (who wasn't even called up until late June, and had to play since he was hitting from the day he got up), what recent World Champion had a prominent contributing everyday player that was a rookie? (And no, I don't count Iguchi as a rookie, those years in Japan meant something). Well, you really answered your own question. Miguel Cabrera did have 318 ABs that season and played all of the playoffs and played a huge park in the WS (HR off Clemens). Other than him all I can think of is the '95 Braves and Chipper Jones.

QUOTE(3E8 @ May 27, 2006 -> 11:45 PM) Ozzie starts the season by benching Anderson only against tough right handed pitchers. Then Mackowiak slowly starts being favored over Anderson even against mediocre righties. Now we've come to a point where Brian only gets put in the lineup when a lefty is on the hill, and Guillen is frustrated because BA isn't getting good swings just 100 at-bats into the season. This one game on, two games off regimen that we've reverted to for Anderson really seems like an ass-backwards offensive development process to me. It's no surprise to me that BA can't develop a consistent approach with at-bats that are becoming more sporadic by the week, especially with what like 30-40 major league starts under his belt? As some have hinted at this could be motivational ploy, and I hope it is, because if Ozzie is serious this would be a completely rash and uncalculated move, especially since Anderson hasn't missed a beat in center and every backup we have is a poor fielder. Maybe Ozzie is a similar manager to *gasp* Dusty Baker, in the sense that he's not great at developing and giving playing time to rookies due to a lack of patience for young players. Over the course of Ozzie's 3 years here in Chicago how many rookie position playes has he had on his roster? Brian Anderson and Pedro Lopez are the only ones I can think of.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ May 27, 2006 -> 11:41 PM) And Dye's average has been sinking like a stone as well. He was around .320 a couple weeks ago. Under .280 now....I think. Dye is currently at .283 FWIW. Dye is 3 for his last 24 (.125) over this stretch his average has dropped from .320 to .283 (37 points).

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ May 27, 2006 -> 11:36 PM) Crede's already looking like garbage again. If he goes in the s***ter, then we'll have 3 black holes batting back-to-back-to-back in our lineup. Actually, Crede has turned it on of late. He was 1 for his last 18 going into the Oakland series but in his last 5 games, he's 7 for his last 21 (.333). He's starting to pick it up again.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ May 27, 2006 -> 11:27 PM) Btw if you haven't noticed, AJ is not driving anyone in this year. He is getting on base and Uribe and BA bat behind him making the 2nd and 3rd outs of the inning. AJ hasn't done well with RISP, hence the low RBI totals. Just saying. This is true, AJ is 29-76 (.382) with the bases empty and only 8-35 (.229) with RISP w/ 11 RBI. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 27, 2006 -> 11:31 PM) Yeah A.J. is not hitting great in RISP spots, but also a lot of times the guys in front of him (The big 3) are doing all the driving in and nobody is left for him to drive home. But if they're driving everyone in, then shouldn't they be on base a lot for AJ to knock them in. Thome: 36 ABs with RISP | Konkero: 38 ABs with RISP | Pierz: 35 ABs with RISP
-
QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ May 27, 2006 -> 11:12 PM) I've missed most of the last few games but I've noticed this lately, if Thome has 2 strikes on him and you throw him high, inside heat, he's DONE. Is he also taking a lot of strikes and falling behind in the count a lot? He's really not taking many pitches, all of a sudden he can't touch the low breaking ball, so pitchers are starting him off with it and he's getting down in the count early.
-
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 27, 2006 -> 11:20 PM) Fair enough, and the Angels do that now with Kennedy. However it is still completely idiotic strategy to have somebody that hits and gets on base hit 9th, it's a waste of scoring chances. And with that, the Angels are the 28th ranked team in the bigs in runs scored.

QUOTE(SoxAce @ May 27, 2006 -> 11:15 PM) Your listening to too much Rancid. It does f*** up the mind in personality. Instead of wanting to slit someone's throat all the time, curse up a storm, and start arguing for know apparent reason, just relax, take a chill pill, and be "one step closer" to being loveable. Well you obviously don't listen to much Rancid now do ya? Maybe the new s*** is kinda glim but the older more ska oriented Rancid is so mellow that it can eliminate depression. And as for the Linkin Park reference . . . nice.

QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ May 27, 2006 -> 11:12 PM) Almost everyone with half a brain--not just James--now realizes that OBP is way more important than AVG. Furthermore, OPS is way, way better than AVG. BA projects for at leastn an average OPS for a CF. I personally love OPS+ and ERA+ atleast with these two stats you can accurately compare players because the 2 stats use lgERA and such when calculating the stats meaning you're using the league averages in an individual stat which is just all too sexy. Plus you get that magical number of 100 which just makes my legs tremble.

QUOTE(SoxAce @ May 27, 2006 -> 11:12 PM) I wouldn't say that. Watching the games, I've never seen Uribe throw a DP ball away twice, yet alone in the same week. He has made routine errors yes, but he hasn't been this bad since he's been here. I remember last season when he had a stretch of not making an error in consecutive games (not too sure though, so I could be wrong.) I think this is another big difference between BA and Uribe. When BA sucks at the plate, he leaves it at the plate as opposed to bringing it out onto the field with him and start sucking defensively. Where as Uribe strikes out a few times on high fastballs or sliders low and away then goes out and throws away a double play ball or two.
