  1. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 16, 2008 -> 02:30 PM) If the Sox trade Dye, I would be a major proponent of signing Bobby Abreu to a 2 year deal. Abreu has a nice left handed stroke and his numbers were partially aided by the short porch in Yankee stadium, but he'll get on base a lot and still has some speed (22 stolen bases). I also recall him having a good relationship with Ozzie Guillen and Ken Williams has often been linked to him. I also have absolutely zero idea what he's looking for in terms of a contract, but I'd give him good money. I'm with you there. I've liked the idea of Abreu for a while now. If you could get him on a 2 year deal, I'd be all over it. Though, I bet he's looking for a 3 year deal.
  2. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Nov 16, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) What's your definition of a consistent winner? The sox have had very few bad teams in the last decade. Like I said, I think KW is good, but it's hard for me to call him a top 3 GM without back-to-back playoff appearances (2 of 8 seasons). That, and the problems with the draft/minor league development are tough to overlook.
  3. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Nov 16, 2008 -> 01:02 PM) The above gets said alot, but that "bad" farm system has led to the acquisition of a lot of good players. Does it matter if the talent is home grown or acquired with home grown prospects? It does. The "bad" farm system is fine if you are continually producing talent to trade, but the draft has been a major weakness during KW tenure. Imagine where the Sox could be if they had in fact drafted well. Not so much in terms of home grown talent in the majors, but those extra bullets for KW to acquire who he really wants. KW is good, but there's room for improvement. He still hasn't produced a consistent winner. Until that happens, I'm not ready too put him in the top 3.
  4. From the standpoint of this year and this year only, I like the trade. Looking back a year, Gio/Sweeney/Fautino blow Marquez/Betemit/Nunez out of the water in terms of value at the time of the trade. But I like what we got for the most part, and think it's fair value. We'll just put Swisher in the mistake pile for KW.
  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 03:59 PM) Swisher might be the most overrated Sox player since I started following the team in '83. Joe Crede.
  6. Personally, I want to see Betemit at 3B full-time, and Fields used to acquire Roberts. That is my ideal process. I trust Betemit's ability to hit Major League pitching, and believe it or not, Betemit is just a year older than Josh.
  7. Nick Swisher in the most professional clubhouse in baseball. Should be interesting.
  8. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 03:04 PM) I like this trade a lot. This is exactly what I want to see Kenny keep doing. Got get those undervalued starters with top of the rotation potential. Betemit could be a real nice find as well, I've always liked him. At worst he's a more than capable UT player. Marquez does not have top of the rotation potential, by all accounts.
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 02:56 PM) Anyone know stuff about Jhonny Nunez? Started out as a SP last season, but failed to maintain his velocity later into games, and he lacks a quality 3rd pitch. Profiles as a middle reliever. His a lively, sinking fastball that tops out at 94. Has an "improving" slider. Throws from a low 3 quarters arm slot.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 02:51 PM) Sox got Betemit also I like that. I've been wondering when this kid is going to get regular ABs. I've always liked Betemit. Not saying I like it for Swisher, but I really think Betemit could be a .270, 20 HR, 80 RBI 3B. He was bad last year, but he's another once HIGHLY touted prospect.
  11. I'll recap quickly BA's take on Marquez from last season... Sinker-Slider guy. Power sinker 89-93. Curve and change improved to solid-average pitches. Great pickoff move. Doesn't miss any bats meaning he relies heavily on his defense. Projects him to be a workhorse number 3 or 4. Again, that was last year's scouting report when he was the Yanks' #7 prospect.
  12. At least give me Melky in this thing.
  13. Wade Davis is a guy I'd like to pick up from TB. I think he's going to be the main trading chip this off season for the Rays. If we could get get E. Jackson and W. Davis, I would be a happy man.
  14. QUOTE (BearSox @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 10:35 PM) Yeah, he got hitters out, but that was his first time around. He still has a lot more to prove to me, and a lot of other people, before I declare him some sort of phenom. Yeah well of course he still has a lot to prove as a SP, I don't disagree there. But his fastball and slider are top notch. And the Poreda/Price comparison really doesn't fit. Price is head and shoulders above Poreda right now.
  15. QUOTE (BearSox @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 10:18 PM) While, he must not have had that solid plus-plus slider in the playoffs. His whole approach is bad anyway. He has a delivery that would be deceitful to lefties, yet his slider is more effective vs. righties down and in. Also, his fastball had some good zip, but didn't have much movement. I'll tell you guys now, Price isn't going to be a stud starter but rather a solid middle of the rotation guy. He allowed 2 H, 1 ER, and 8 K's in 5.2 IP with just a good fastball? I saw him make several good hitters look silly with his slider.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 09:58 PM) Price seems to be just a more hyped Poreda. Similar FB, questionable breaking/secondary stuff. Even Dave Wills was honest, saying that he believed Price would really have to prove himself and that there were a lot of question marks about his arsenal holding up for 5-7 innings, as limited as it was. Sure, he has the fastball, but any big leaguer can crank Zumaya if he's sitting "dead red." Like Swisher, lol. Price's slider is a solid plus-plus pitch. It's compared to Smoltz's in his prime. It's certainly not questionable.
  17. If I had spent my entire career in the NL, I wouldn't want to move to the AL either unless it was to an organization that is consistently in the playoffs.
  18. I'd make a call to the Pirates about Capps. I think he's about ready to take a step up the closer rung.
  19. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Nov 9, 2008 -> 01:38 PM) I have to disagree. Bobby's built like Billy Wagner more than F. Rodriguez. His career as a closer will be long. He deserves high-seven figures, and he'll still be a hugely valuable commodity. He has a bit more value while being underpaid, I'll give you that. But this really depends on the team - I don't think $ is a huge issue for the Mets. I'm not saying don't trade him - just get A LOT. Whatever he deserves is not the main issue. What he will get will drop a lot of teams out of the running for Bobby. Only a few would be willing to take on a 8 figure reliever. Demand is dropping. Trade him now while many teams are interested.
  20. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Nov 9, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) This is crazy talk, sorry. MB has another 10-12 quality seasons in him, either with the Sox or somebody else. Jenks' value is NOT in decline. Jenks' value IS in decline. His contract is going up exponentially. In a couple years, he could be making 8 figures. Strike while the iron is hot.
  21. Where does Kenny utter the words Jerry Owens? Kenny saying that hes going to give some young guys a chance, doesn't mean he's going to give Jerry Owens a chance.
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 12:35 PM) Don't they have Luke Donald? I would love to get Werth in exchange for Dye. Ahh Jason Donald. Completely forgot about him. I'd be happy with a deal centered around Carrasco and Donald. If we could get Werth as well, somehow, that would be a tremendous deal.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 11:45 AM) Please stop using Broadway as an actual piece in a trade. A Dye trade would likely be for one of the Phillies middle infield prospects. With Cardenas gone, do they even have any worthy of trading Dye for?
