  1. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 01:25 PM) Did the WSox suddenly get an infusion of cash? Eric Chavez Contract $66M/6yr (2005 $8M first yr) Why do it? Proven success. 2002 Pos-AS 38R, 51RBI, .280A, .355O, .480S 2003 Pos-AS 48R, 51RBI, .313A, .378O, .562S 2004 Pos-AS 49R, 40RBI, .286A, .403O, .507S He's 20R & 20RBI off the pace in his Pre-AS numbers. Is this because of the A's dismal lineup or is there a health concern? He's currently hitting between Kendall (.324O, .293S) & Hatteberg (.345O, .359S). In 2004 he had McLemore (.355O, .328S) & Dye (.329O, .464S). In 2003 he had Durazo (.374O, .430S) & Tejada (.336O, .472S). It goes w/out saying there's a drop-off in the talent around him in the lineup. But does it explain his (.284O, .340S) for 2005? Is he healthy? I don't know how the WSox can afford it, but if you are going to trade for him you must guarantee a high OBP guy hitting ahead of him in the lineup. Surprisingly Thomas, Iguchi, & Pods all fit that bill. Do you trade Koney (.336O, .462S, 27R, 37RBI) then to offset the money for this year? Oakland is going to throw in any cash. Chavez weak 1st half is just going to get you a lower price to pay in talent. After 2005 his cost is $58M/5 yr. Right around the first offer price to Maggs. Is Chavez capable of producing 100R, 120RBI consistently yr after yr w the White Sox? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/spli...tting&year=2005 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/spli...tting&year=2004 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/spli...tting&year=2003 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/spli...tting&year=2002 You have to factor in more than his offensive numbers to rationalize his talent as a ball player. Will he put up the numbers Maggs did, probably not quite, but at the same time, was maggs a four time gold glover, in a position at which defense is a must, nope. Not to mention that having a built in first place team, a better hitting lineup and a team with more chemitry waiting for him to join, also factor in one of his cloest friends in Dye on the team. I think an improvement is not a stretch. Maybe this year the payroll would be a stretch since we would have to pay some of his salary, but getting rid of Koney next year would basically be a wash. Juggs, not trying to harp on you or anything, I just think his defensive talents need to factor into his worth, I agree with you on most of your points.
  2. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 01:22 PM) Wasn't he just flat-out released? Not traded? you are correct.
  3. QUOTE(Adam G @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 01:20 PM) Happens pretty regularly with holdout players or ones that wont take a pay cut (see RW McQuarters). once again, name the last GM to come on the radio and say they are going to trade a player. Especially one who has the largest contract ever offered by the ballclub.
  4. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 12:15 PM) AJ is still arbit eligible. Pretty much if the Sox want him, they own him for another year. I guarantee you he wants to stay here too, I think he has found a home where people appreciate him, unlike gay SF
  5. QUOTE(soxman352000 @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 12:02 PM) I will be at the game as well. Sitting out in the bleachers for the first time. GO SOX Nice, you will enjoy it, Eat s*** CLEVELAND
  6. QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 09:39 AM) Well, I will be there tonight. My first Sox home game since 1990. congrats, celebrate with a PBR in left field
  7. QUOTE(chisox2334 @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 11:40 AM) Beane told Espn raido that hes not trading Chavez name the last GM who came on the radio and said they were going to trade their players
  8. QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 11:36 AM) Again, I am ATTEMPTING to compare the 2005 Cubs to the 2005 White Sox. the 2005 white sox beat the 2005 cubs, done.
  9. QUOTE(marsh @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 12:04 PM) And despite all of that, they didn't give him one fastball. That is very telling, especially since K-Rod has a plus fastball. Because Frank would have mashed a fastball into left field, that would have been great.
  10. QUOTE(DABearSoX @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 10:39 AM) I just wanted to post some nonsense because I havent been apart of any of these Chavez threads.....seriously though some of you guys are creamin your pants thinking about this....its a little pathetic mostly thinking and rubbing I guess
  11. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 09:51 AM) I don't because now BB can try and drive up the asking price for him. If he says he wants to trade him then his value suffers...IMO That was the whole point of my post, it was sarcastic, I thought the smiley with the hammer was enough to show that.
  12. QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 09:28 AM) If the Braves make a deal for Jacque Jones that involves Andy Marte fans should burn Atlanta down. The only way Marte should be traded is if you are getting a top flight player... not a guy like Jacque Jones. I dont think the Braves were scouting the Twins. It is a rarity when two first place teams swap players, they were probably checking out the bullpen of the Indians, because they are perceived out of it right now.
  13. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 09:44 AM) ESPN 1000 just reported Billy Beane said he doesn't intend to trade Chavez to anyone...if you can believe that. Surprising to me, usually when players are going to be traded, the GM likes to be vocal about it, so that everyone knows that he wants to get rid of the player and they can basically offer anything for him. Also they tend to do this because it usually improves the morale of the player in case he doesnt get dealt, because he wants to play harder when the team doesnt want him. I see this as a bad sign if he says they wont trade him.
  14. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 07:21 AM) I'm with you...I'm a huge FRank fan and want him as our DH...but for less money,so we can put other players around him and win. I would love to see Frank get a ring...here! with that said, if it means unloading Frank for me to see a World Series, then I would do it.
  15. QUOTE(go-sox05 @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 08:23 AM) why would we give up prospects and Crede for a guy batting .225 w/ 5 home runs. s*** even Crede has better numbers than that. see the thread from yesterday, read it, if you still have an argument get back to us, thankss
  16. QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 03:54 PM) How would you all feel if we gave up Anderson + Crede instead for Chavez? Considering we would still have Sweeney left as OF prospect and with Rowand and Pods here to stay for a while with our grind it out team, wouldn't it be better to keep our stud pitchers with us? In a second, I would actually deal Anderson and Sweeney for Chavez. We still have OF prospects behind them as well.
  17. Alot of the posters seem to think that Dye and Chavez speak alot and Chavez wants to play with Dye again.
  18. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 03:49 PM) So they want to toss Brandon right in the starting rotation.. I say let them have him. It'll be sad to watch him fail because, IMO, he's not ready for the show. I will tell you what, I wouldnt have much confidence is watching him face the Rangers that many times per year, I will tell you that.
  19. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 03:44 PM) Its an off day. Gives the board a topic to discuss. Most of Freddy's contract last season was picked up by Seattle. They were able to sign him to an extension because the Sox had a ton of $ coming off the books after last season. They do have Konerko perhaps coming of the books next year, and Frank may be bought out for $3.5 million, Everett may go, but Garland should get a huge raise as will AJ and several others. The Sox are in an entirely different position. Even if Oakland picked up most of Chavez's salary this season, which I really doubt they would, they would have a budget problem in 2006 and beyond if they took on this contract. And Beane would have to also consider how this trade would go down with the Oakland fans. It could be enough to run them out of town. Exactly, he needs a winner on the field to have the fans at the park, with his contract eating up alot of their payroll, he needs flexibility to add new pieces. As far as our budget, I see no reason why our payroll wont increase, especially after this trade puts us in the playoffs!!!!
  20. trolling around on the A's message board, this is their opinion on the matter Would be one of the best trades ever for oakland. Too bad there isn't a chance on earth it will happen. I love Chavez probably more than a lot of people on this board. Still, Brandon McCarthy is a Rich Harden/Mark Prior level pitcher. Not only that but it will free up tons of money for the A's to sign what they need/want in the future. Also, Joe Crede with a little work, could turn out to be one heck of a player. You know he's good for 20+HR each year so if the A's could round up his OBP a little he'd be a very servicable 3B with power from the right. Rotation: Zito/Harden/McCarthy/Haren/Blanton, not bad, not bad at all. We could also maybe even afford to sign Zito or something crazy. But as I said before, even the dumb "we want to win a championship this year" white sox aren't dumb enough to give up a young cheap pitcher with that kind of potential. Chavez is a big upgrade from Crede but starting pitching is soooo valueable.
  21. QUOTE(zach61 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 03:14 PM) Who are the cubs and why do I even care? When you throw an "if" before something, then don't bother debating it. When ifs and buts are beer and beernuts, then we'd be having a party. I would rather be comparing the Sox to the Twins cause the cubs don't matter.
  22. QUOTE(Be Good @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 03:28 PM) He's battin 218 4 HR and 24. 218, that's all we need another guy who's going to hit in the low .200's. Yes his carrer stats are something like this 280 25 100. But as we learned from Uribe, PK, Dead that carrer stats do mean everything. If we are going to even think about shipping BMac, be better get a 300 30 100 guy. Chavez has better and more consistent career stats then all of those guys just mentioned, not to mention that last year was Juan's second full season playing all the time. Shipping a not for sure prospect to someone will never bring a 300 30 100 guy, unless its on XBOX.
  23. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 03:36 PM) I thought he was in W/S? Kanny
  24. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 03:37 PM) Best start in 70 years.. double digit attendance % increase.. financial room to wiggle.. an exciting buzz that the south side hasn't seen in 10 years.. (debatable) solid rotation.. And you think that holding onto a prospect is more important than doing something drastic to improve the offense NOW when there is a chance to make the playoffs and actually win a game rather than watching them piss themselves again... Alrighty..
  25. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 03:34 PM) How much pressure is it playing on a non-contender? Would you like to take your same argument to one thread? Being the only player on a team that is rebuilding, after your GM traded half of your team and friends away, right after another playoff run, while you are expected to contend again. Alot of pressure, especially when you are signed to be the corner stone of the team, and pushed into a leadership role that you are not comfortable with.
