"So if we beat that you'll sign today? Congratulations welcome to the Chicago White Sox".
-
I cannot endorse this statement more highly. Paying Manny Machado way more than our current offers makes complete sense when he might very well put up 40 WAR for us over 10 years, which over that time (and counting inflation) would be worth something like $500 million to this franchise. And frankly, paying $12 million per WAR is something we're used to - we paid more than that in our 2015 and 2016 acquisitions. In other words, a $500 million dollar deal for Manny Machado could very well be better spending than our last batch of free agent acquisitions, and no one is talking about that kind of money for him. A $300 million deal has a strong chance of being the best contract the White Sox offer for any US Free agent this decade.

If Lozano's price has been moderately reasonable - where we thought it would be at the start of the offseason - and the White Sox lose him because they've been insisting that they need a dramatic discount and waiting for Machado's side to come down, then it's their own fault if they don't get him. But, as always, we will see. It's entirely possible the Padres getting involved is what the White Sox need to get this done. It's also entirely possible that the White Sox get completely overwhelmed by another team putting up a fair bid when the White Sox demanded a discount. All I ask is we evaluate the GM of the White Sox based on the results at the end.

It remains difficult to believe. They have money this year, but they have never had a payroll over $110 million and in 2020 they already have $115 million projected by B-R.
-
With that ballpark I was always surprised they couldn't sustain a higher payroll, but the B-R estimate, including arbitration, has their payroll jumping to $115 million in 2020 without any additions, and that would be a record payroll for them.

If Machado were added, this bench is pretty full. Engel, Leury, Rondon, Yolmer, backup catcher - there's already got to be an odd person out, and that's before the OF we were considering in the other thread that would move Palka to the bench or minors. You're not going to improve that bench very much.
-
Bah, until Machado actually signs somewhere all of these are rehearsed PR firm statements. They're statements to make so they can say something without saying anything. Criticize if they say that after losing the player.

There's a differnece between "Something ain't right" and "we're out"
-
Ohh boy are we up to "and he's in the best shape of his life" yet?

As has been said before, replace the phrase "too PC" with "treating people who are different with you with respect" and you will understand why Greg is so outraged by this.

It is simply unbelievable that the offers discussed in this thread are the high offer. The excuse other people gave for why the Dodgers would accept such crappy offers is that the Dodgers might not want to trade him to someone they could contend with next year. That the Dodgers would wait several weeks to accept such crappy offers, when the rest of the league should come forward with better offers for this player? Implausible. If we were putting up a strong offer, led by someone like Basabe or Dunning, the Dodgers would absolutely wait for that. Fulmer and Bummer and a minor 3rd piece and the Dodgers are going to wait for that? No they won't. One of those players they might get by the deadline this year if the White Sox need a roster spot. If the Dodgers would have actually done that and the White Sox were ready to trade away anyone at all, the White Sox should have gotten it done. The offers in this thread that people are so enthused about, it didn't make sense that the Dodgers would accept something so weak for this player, and then on top of that White Sox would hesitate on completing it to wait on another deal and the Dodgers will just accept that? Just not plausible. No one in this thread has been willing to part with someone from our strong prospects for him. If the White Sox aren't willing to part with that they they don't have the high offer.

Dramatic is the punishment ceremony I want for Rick Hahn after his 2016 season, where the last surviving White Sox fans are wearing cloaks and carrying torches and he is tied up with us surrounding him, we light a moat of oil on fire around him slowly chanting let's go go go white sox as the fires approach.
-
No. He violated every single possible level of trust on his way out. He can be honored by the organization for what he did in his career but he will never manage my team again. I am struggling to think of anyone who burned a bridge that badly on the way out since maybe David Wells. I would feel utterly betrayed by any White Sox GM that hired him.
-
Am I allowed to pick Robert? He's the one I really want to see have a breakout year. Just shred a level or two.
-
Loved listening to him while I grew up and it was time for him to go. Get him the Frick award while he's alive.
-
If the Dodgers really are insistent that they need to move this player, they are unlikely to sit there waiting several weeks for the White Sox to make up their mind.
-
Rick Hahn has to say something. He isn't going to no comment and he can't say that he deserves to be fired if he doesn't sign one of them. Even if the statement is BS he has to say it.

FWIW, the admins do not allow users to have multiple accounts.

The 2 simultaneous absolutely perfect reactions.

Um...for which team?
-
Honestly, I think they do. I think it feels pretty good to be the center of attention.
-
If a person who wanted attention got some leaks and then decided to make up 1/2 of them...we'd believe all of them because of the few they got right.
-
If I were a GM and I saw that Machado was available for $200 million and not $300 million, I'd be doing everything I could to be in that game. I'm never going to spend money more effectively on the free agent market than that.
