  1. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 08:35 AM) This thread could go in either place, because I'm really wondering if this bizarre trend that includes the White Sox has a somewhat empirical explanation. If I had to guess, salaries have finally gotten so inflated that the variance in returns to salary is jacked way up. Or you could guess that payroll doesn't correlate to won games and never really has.
  2. Dead Island is pretty enjoyable so far. It's not quite Fallout 3 with zombies, but it's basically the game that I wanted Dead Rising to be: a first person, RPG, co-op zombie game. I've yet to actually play the co-op, but the single player has been thoroughly enjoyable thus far.
  3. QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 07:05 PM) if this holds true then it's a definite purchase That's what it was described as in the IGN review. Not the IGN is the best or anything, but even if that's remotely true, it's enough to sell me. They said it was a little rough around the edges (something I've read all over the place, actually), but that it's still a very fun zombie RPG with a large world. That's more than enough for me to get excited about something.
  4. Dead Island in two days! First reviews seem to be basically what I was expecting, fun games with some rough edges. It'll definitely be nice to have a co-op zombie game, especially since it's been described as Fallout 3 with zombies. That's more than enough for me.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 29, 2011 -> 07:12 PM) He didn't. Remember he said he took care of it before anyone knew about it? I read your post as you were annoyed that no one found out about it. The fact that something was taken care of (and that the person they bribed was initially going for destruction of property for the exploding car) just tells me that he got caught, but that money solves every problem.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 29, 2011 -> 03:12 PM) I could have done without the Charger scene though. That was almost annoying with no one catching him while he blows up a car and then calls a cab. He did get caught though, as was explained by Saul in the next scene. He had to pay out the ass to make it go away (although really, he can piss away money like nobody else). It's just another example of Walt becoming less and less careful. He's become an adrenaline junkie, and sooner or later it's going to come back to haunt him.
  7. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 03:52 PM) I just received a call from them asking if I wanted to purchase any tickets since I'd "purhcased some already for the 2011 season". Are they really calling anyone who has purchased single-game tickets, now? Yikes. This is incredibly common in sports. Lots of teams follow up with people pretty recently after the game they bought single-game seats for. Basically, this doesn't mean anything other than the Sox are trying to sell tickets, which shouldn't be a surprise.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 07:16 PM) I don't watch them but they depict and represent themselve as somewhat realistic. I used to watch the Law and Order shows, but the Wire basically guaranteed that I'll never watch a normal cop show again. I can't even stomach Law and Order episodes anymore.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 02:42 PM) Anyone have some Netflix streaming recommendations? The last 2 series I watched on it were Dr Who and Battle Star Gallactica, and both were good. I saw Fathom post about Torchwood (Dr Who spinoff) just was wondering if others have some diamonds in the rough. The X Files I just started again myself after watching it in my childhood... holds up pretty well so far.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 06:11 AM) The renewal to finish Breaking Bad is for 16 more episodes after this season but they don't know how or when it will air. Last night taught me to set the DVR for an extra 15 minutes. Stopped when Hank was going through the stuff again. Anything happen in that last scene?

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 07:56 PM) Next season of Breaking Bad will be the final season. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Pretty sure this was the plan all along.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2011 -> 04:09 PM) Brent Morel has hit .290 in the major leagues for 3.5 months with improving slugging as time goes on. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with Morel's future here, but Morel had an ISO of .029 in June and .024 in July. It's significantly better in August so far with half of the month left, but I don't think you can make a serious argument that his slugging has improved much as the season as progressed. Unless you're only looking at August and ignoring the previous two months, in which case... Simply put, Morel has been very, very bad with the bat this year. Will it improve in the future? Almost certainly, but that's because it's damn hard for a player to be this bad again (unless you're Drew Butera/Jeff Mathis). Even Brian Anderson wasn't this bad.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 13, 2011 -> 08:51 AM) You think he did a good job with the accent? Interesting. QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Aug 13, 2011 -> 09:04 AM) Personally, I think he meant that Con Air would have sucked with or without the accent. I think Con Air was an awesome movie that owned regardless of any accent. Saying it'd have been entertaining without it is like saying Face/Off would have been a great movie without the ridiculous plotline. Both of those movies were ridiculously entertaining movies just the way they were. Basically, if you don't have fun/enjoy Con Air, then you're watching it wrong.

  18. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 11, 2011 -> 03:18 PM) I just realized I forgot Deadwood. I have no idea how I forgot that. f***ing excellent show that never got to properly end

  20. QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 10:37 PM) Inevitably, the Office. And ER died a bit earlier than I would have thought. Also, the Simpsons needs to die. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/premature pre·ma·ture    adjective 1. occurring, coming, or done too soon: a premature announcement. 2. mature or ripe before the proper time. noun 3. a premature infant.

QUOTE (Felix @ Jul 3, 2011 -> 12:16 AM) The Mollusk is a seriously great album, as is the rest of their stuff depending on the mood you're in. Their s*** goes from being delightfully brown (Pure Guava) to low-fi punk (GodWeenSatan: The Oneness) to 'poppy' (or as close as you'll get for Ween with White Pepper) to a taste of just about everything on 'Chocolate and Cheese.' Definitely recommend their other albums as well (quebec, Shinola, 12 Country Greats and La Cucaracha to a lesser extent). I can't say I recommend The Pod to anyone right away as I still have issues listening to it, but it's got some decent tracks as well. It's just incredibly brown and tough to listen to, though. It's easy to listen a couple of Ween tracks and discount them as a juvenile band and nothing else, but that'd be a mistake. They definitely have a number of tracks that are designed to get a cheap laugh or two, but I think the contrast between those songs and their "serious" ones is really effective in making the whole album an enjoyable experience. They also have a lot of songs that are tributes to other bands/artists (such as the one I linked to in my previous post), and when listening to their catalog, it's clear how much they really love music and the people that play it. There's a huge appreciation for the people that came before them, which is one of their most endearing traits IMO. Any time. Over the past year or two, Ween has really become one of my favorite bands (alongside Mr. Bungle -- "California" is one of the best and most interesting albums I've ever listened to in my life). At this point, they're probably ahead of Zappa, but that could just be a tendency to favor the artists most recently in my mind. EDIT: I'm kind of embarrassed that I wrote a whole post about Ween and didn't even bother to mention that Deaner is a great, great . Or, if you'd rather listen to the AV Club... http://www.avclub.com/articles/ween,59963/
