QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 08:57 PM) This is what I had for my first job out of school and my second job 6 months later. Objective To obtain a full-time mechanical engineering position with a world leader in the manufacturing industry Work history (list previous two jobs and tasks) Education (U of I) (JJC) Project Experience (Senior design project with a couple bullet points) (Reliability Engineering with a bullet point) (Mechanical Design II with a bullet point) (Introduction to Manufacturing with a couple of bullet points) Skills (list software that I'm familiar with) I figure now that I'm mid-career, I'll delete all the project stuff from school and fill them in with work projects. Not sure about the objective. I don't think it should jump straight to education (or should I even put that on there?) Once you've been out of school a few years, unless this is a CV for academia, education falls below work experience in order (just as you have it there).

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 08:43 PM) I do (agree, I think "objective" or "goal" as a title on a resume is not the best). I have a "career profile" and within that, I state what I'm looking for. Sort of. We should compare resumes sometime... in fact, it might be a cool thread... to give people some pointers. Hmmm. Should we? I have to admit, I'm not sure I'm comfortable doing that in the public forum.

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 04:43 PM) Other 2 are pre-debate. Not exactly - the Debate was Tuesday night, so the new poll is two-thirds pre-Debate as well.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 04:58 PM) Cool. Your Alma Mater has a pretty nice program, but I figure I'll work another couple of years before going back and do it when I hold a position that is less demanding on contribution and focuses more on supervision (ie I can do my study work in my office while working as a supervisor.) I bought a GMAT book for some review, and the test doesn't seem bad at all. Iowa State? I actually got my B.A. there, not my MBA. But I have heard good things about ISU's b-school. If I recall though, the best MBA programs in Des Moines is Drake. But that was way back when - I don't know if that's still true. Iowa or ISU may have a Des Moines MBA program nowadays (as opposed to Ames or IC).

Nevada Caucus and SC GOP Primary discussion thread

I tend to agree that a caucus may not be the best way to go. But it does make it exciting! -
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 03:41 PM) what if you're just looking to add it to your resume and not actually apply anything you learn? You know, just to make you name standout a little bit more. Does the school really matter (ie, University of Phoenix) It matters a lot - just like for undergrad, but maybe even more so. That doesn't mean you have to go to Kellogg or Harvard, but what school you go to makes a giant difference in the program. Then there is the name recognition aspect... whether it should or not, the name of the school, especially for MBAs, will make a difference. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 03:41 PM) Also, did you guy have to submit a resume when applying? If so, what did you put as your objective? Did you use the objective for your current job, desired job, or something related to the business school. Most higher end MBA programs prefer to take people that are not direct out of undergrad - there is usually a requirement for some work experience first. And yes, at least in my case, a resume had to go with the application. Personally, I never ever put an "objective" or "goal" on a resume. I think its silly. But not everyone else shares that view. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 03:41 PM) What exactly are the classes like and how are they graded? Some MBA programs don't even give grades. Others do, but not always in the standard ways you'd think of (tests, papers, etc.). A lot of MBA programs like peer grading a lot, since its supposed to be a business-like atmosphere. So really, it depends on the program.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 04:15 PM) The Las Vegas Review Journal has given a heads up about poll results to be released tomorrow for NV: Those results are quite different than the other two NV polls out. Basically, we have no idea what will happen in that caucus.

Chinese food. Rama chicken (chicken, broccolli, peanut sauce, over rice). And water. Pretty boring.

Nevada will hold both caucuses, and South Carolina will have its Republican primary, on Saturday th 19th. Here is an opening volley... when asked about the lawsuit filed to prevent caucus locations in the casinos in Vegas, Slick Willy got a little snippy. And he kept saying over and over again that those votes would be worth five times as much; anyone know what that's about? By the way, as Sqwert noted, the courts decided the caucus locations are a go.

I got my MBA in '04, after having worked in industry for a number of years. What you look for in an MBA program is mostly the same as any other grad school program - schedule, money, reputation of school, name recognition, school funding levels, program details and your career. But in addition, take a look at three things specific to MBA. One, look at the faculty, and see that at least some of them have significant industry background - if its mostly academics doing the teaching, that's probably not good. You want a balance, and I'd say, more towards people from business. Second thing, look at any info the school has on business alignment - see if they do any programs, internships, work shares, etc., with companies, and who they are. Finally, many MBA programs have major business figures involved not as everyday professors, but in smaller capacities - see who they are. If you want more info, PM me.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 01:12 PM) AC/DC only sells digital music through Verizon V Cast I assume that if I don't have a Verizon phone, I can't get to those, yeah? I'll look into it.

QUOTE(SnB @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 01:55 PM) i have a bunch of ac/dc cd's in itunes, it's not itunes or ac/dc or whatever, its your cd drive. Except that I've downloaded every other disc in my collection over the past year, including a bunch yesterday, with no problem. I think its a brand new disc and they've coded it somehow to not allow downloads. Assholes. They've got my money, why be jerks about it?

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 01:15 PM) Per CNN the casinos will be allowed to hold caucuses. Point, Obama.

Someone needs to tell Giuliani his bizarre delayed campaign strategy isn't working. He isn't going to win SC for sure (he's in 5th there solidly), and is looking like he's in 3rd in NV. As for Super Tuesday, his prime target? Well, here are the most recent polls (within last week only) from 3 of the largest states that day... Florida (which is all-or-nothing, by the way)... _________S-USA_StrVis_Quinn McCain........25.........27.....22 Giuliani........23.........18.....20 Huckabee.....18.........20.....19 Romney.......18.........17.....19 Thompson.....9..........10......7 Paul..............4...........5.......5 California... __________CNN_S-USA McCain........20......33 Giuliani........14......18 Romney.......16......13 Huckabee.....13......14 Thompson.....6........9 Paul..............8........4 New Jersey... __________Rasm_Monmouth McCain.........29.......29 Giuliani.........27.......25 Huckabee......10.......11 Romney........10........9 Thompson......6.........5 Paul...............5.........5 So he isn't even leading in New Jersey, and is significantly behind in FL and CA. And the latest national polls, reflective of many of the other states on Super Tuesday, show this... __________USAT_Pew_Hotline_NYT_ABC McCain.........33.....29......32......33....28 Huckabee.....19.....20......17......18....20 Romney........11.....17......15.......8....19 Giuliani.........13.....13......12......10....15 Thompson......9.......9.......7........8......8 Paul...............3.......4.......4........5......3 So much for Rudy's goldmine. I doubt these states get better for him while he gets hammered in SC and NV. In fact, the trends with him in IA and NH were such that when he was actually campaigning, the more he was there, the more his numbers sank. Barring some major weird events, I think Giuliani and Thompson are dead men walking.

So, I went looking to download a couple AC/DC songs the other day. The iTunes store didn't have them (or almost any other AC/DC music, amazingly), neither did Amazon music or a series of other places I looked. So, I broke down and bought the CD. Then when I put the CD in the computer to download to iTunes, it doesn't even recognize it. Its like it doesn't even know there is a CD in the drive. Same with WMP. And yet, I can play the CD just fine in a normal, non-computer CD player. WTF? Is this AC/DC being losers or something? Anyone have a clue on this? All I wanted was an MP3 of Thunderstruck.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 10:31 AM) I guess this slipped past me, but I didn't realize they had moved him from 2B to CF. When Rogers says "shows signs", I assumed that meant its a guess by Phil that he'd eventually do that. But looking at the numbers, he did indeed play 68 games in the OF last season, compared to 54 at 2B. Nice catch YAS.

Any of the bazillion commercials for erectile dysfunction medications. If I see another 50 year old married couple sitting in matching bathtubs in the middle of a field... One exception: the ones for whatever that over the counter one is, encite, or something. Enzyte maybe? Those are pretty funny.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 03:13 PM) Really? One of my business teachers is a consultant for several different HR departments, and he says they absolutely HATE those BS cliche answers to the "What is one of your weaknesses?" question. You're (not you specifically) not answering the question when you turn it into something like, "My main weakness is that I care too much." That's one of the worst questions to get as an interviewee, and this discussion is exactly why. Some interviewers (like me) prefer a real, if self-deprocating, answer. But many prefer the polished B.S. answer. And its impossible to tell which they want. So what I did, when faced with the "what is your biggest weakness" answer, is reply with "which answer would you like?" That usually gets a chuckle, and lets them know that I know what they are getting at. Then they can tell me which version they want.
-
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 02:57 PM) Well, from experience, you can tell BS from polish. Polish, quick thinking business BS is an art. Trust me. But with that said, I guess it depends on your take when "interviewing" for POTUS. Yeah, I guess I don't interview a lot of Presidential candidates. I usually think that when asked a tough question, or one there is no good answer to, there is a way to be honest but still be smooth about it. Its an art few people have mastered, though.
-
QUOTE(mr_genius @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 02:30 PM) Definitely. Funny thing is they know they aren't getting the real answer to a question like that. It's kind of a "lets see how well they can bs an answer" type question I guess I am not normal in this regard, but, when I interview people, I prefer a real answer. if I get too many well-polished shields for answers, I won't be hiring them. I know going in that people will not be perfect - but I'd rather they were straightforward about it.
-
QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) Well at least the 3 Dems are also highly intelligent. As are the GOP candidates. Contrary to what some seem to think, none of these guys and gals are dummies.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 01:38 PM) Style and personality sure as hell didn't help us over the last 7 years, now did it? Well, I don't think ANY of Bush, Gore or Kerry were particularly likeable personalities, and neither did a lot of the rest of the US, as I recall. This election actually has some more likeable candidates on both sides of the aisle.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 01:31 PM) I told you all that Clinton's got it locked up after N.H. She may win, but no one has anything locked up yet. Not even close, in my view. Heck, I'm betting Obama takes SC and probably NV too (though NV will be very close), which gives him big mo going into Super Tuesday. And the national polls that had Clinton's lead in the 30's a couple months ago just keep shrinking, now down to single digits. I think they are running about even right now, overall. The difference maker will be John Edwards. So if all three go to convention and neither Clinton nor Obama can get 50% (which seems very likely at this point), that means Edwards crowns the nominee.
