  1. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 7, 2007 -> 08:41 AM) BTW, has anyone lived in both extremes? If you've lived in Chicago, the answer is yes. I was living in Ames, Iowa when they set their record for low air temperature - 32 below zero F. I also lived in Memphis, TN for a few years, where its 90 to 100 and high humidity every friggin' day for 3 months. I'll take the cold, thank you. Every time I stepped out of my door in Memphis during the summer, I felt like the heat and humidity stole a small bit of my soul.
  2. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 06:26 PM) Ted Haggard issued a statement today proclaiming that he was now "completely heterosexual" Has its own thread.
  3. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 04:59 PM) Initially, it's slow, but after that, it's fantastic. Who the heck is that?
  4. I like my Mr. Incredithome avy a lot, but, its a year old now. Time for something new. I couldn't think of anything, so... I am now open to suggestions from the board. Send me a pic/design/avatar, or an idea for one, and I'll use the one that is most entertaining. If I hear nothing, I'm going back to the Navy pilot with the viking opera helmet. Have at it...
  5. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 04:44 PM) Actually, Methane is another potentially severe greenhouse gas, possibly even more severe than CO2 because there's so little methane in the atmosphere right now. moooooooooooooooooooooo...
  6. In case there was any doubt, surveys reveal just how important the Iraq War is to voters in IA and NH.
  7. If you want a short commute to downtown, reasonable prices for a condo, fun stuff to do and easy transportation access... Bucktown is a good call. Not cheap, but not as expensive as LP, River North or Streeterville. I live a few blocks from the blue line - 10 minutes to downtown. Also a few blocks from the Metra UP-N and UP-NW lines - 8 minutes to downtown. Near the Kennedy. And I can walk to dozens of restaurants and bars, a movie theatre, health club, etc. within a mile. And, your friends can actually find parking on the street in a lot of areas, unlike the aforementioned other neighborhoods. No high rises - less dense, but still urban. Its pretty perfect, as far as I'm concerned.
  8. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 01:53 PM) I have to sprint to a class and Science is being a F***ing B***h and taking absolutely forever to load, but here's a random version I found for now. I'll look for a better version in a couple hours. That does the trick.
  9. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 01:29 PM) The chart is still accurate. The difference between the 1950's reading and the top of those spikes is about 2 degree's centigrade. How much do you think we have gone up from the 1950's as a planet. The dino comment was sarcasm. However the Triassic period was about 245 million years ago which would put it right in the middle of one of those spikes. Well, no. That chart goes to 400,000 years ago. The Triassic you noted at 245,000,000 years ago is orders of magnitude further back. And by the way, 2 degrees centigrade in 50 years is a HUGE jump in the grand scheme of things. I'll let Balta throw out the right data, because when I search for more recent charts, I either get the short-recent ones or the long-term but cut short ones (like you show). I can't find a long term chart that includes the last 50 years (which is of course very, very short on that timescale, but the rise puts CO2 and temp values way above the previous spikes).
  10. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 07:28 AM) NSS 8.4 Nuke 7.6 must... control... tasteless... joke...
  11. QUOTE(Cknolls @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 11:00 AM) 2006: Republicans control Congress. Call for a cloture vote in Senate. Dems deny cloture vote. Repubs are accused of limiting debate. 2007: Dems control Congress. Call for a vote for cloture. Repubs deny vote. Repubs are accused of stiffling debate. Defenders of MSM bias have at it. Seems to me you just proved the LACK of media bias. Same tactic, same exposure, same result.
  12. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 11:23 AM) Maybe the dino's drove around in big SUVs, worked at big factories, and were too tied to Oil. 1. Note that in the chart, "present" is 1950. Nice. Its the spikes since then that are really way beyond historical averages. Your chart is not accurate. 2. There were no dinosaurs around 400k years ago, or even close to that.
  13. QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 09:49 AM) I'm very confused by this issue. I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing of the science behind the debate, other than the basics. I just don't understand how the Earth can actually cool down for a period of time (30 years ago) when the Earth is supposedly getting hotter and hotter. How does southern Texas or California get snow for the first time in 15-20 years while glaciers are melting in front of our eyes? QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 09:58 AM) How's that global warming effecting Chicago right now? Without diving into the debate entirely, I am going to respond to this particular falacy. Individual days, weeks, or even seasons, are NOT indicative of climate change in any direction. That's like looking at a baseball team that went 120-42 for the season, randomly choosing one of the 42 losses, and saying "see, that team sucks". Its equally ridiculous when people point it out when its hot, or when its cold. The overall trends, in reality, are crystal clear that warming is occurring. There is no logical debate otherwise. The only questions is how much of that is caused by human influence. My take, and that of the great majority if science, is that its a pretty sizable chunk. Others may think its only a small amount of it. Either way, its important.
  14. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 07:46 PM) That post wasn't entirely meant for you but just as a post to a group of people who seem to think Ozuna is a known commodity when he's far from it. I agree with you though as of right now an Ozuna/Mack platoon is probably the best offensive option this team has, I still don't want Pablo out in LF because he is terrible but he and Mack should, in theory, be able to produce at a much higher level than Erstad alone would be able to reach. I'd love to see Mackowiak start in LF and leadoff against righties and Erstad start in LF with Iguchi leading off against lefties. Then whenever Pablo gets into the starting lineup as an infielder have him take over leadoff duties. Fair enough. I would be equally happy seeing Mack/Erstad out there covering LF, and Ozuna backing up 3B, maybe 2B, and doing more PH/PR duties than he had previously. I think if Ozzie is serious about using the tools he has, then Pablo needs more PH attempts against LHP in 2007, as well as more PR duties. That gives you a little more speed (targeted to situations) without sacrificing defense.
  15. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 07:33 PM) from what i can tell it's around $3,700,000,000,000 Here is an easy, quick way to dump some of that... Find the 5 agencies of the federal government who are the least efficient (you can use percentage of funds to target or services directed to target, for example). Disband them. Take a three year surge of their annual budget, and either write checks to the target audience and say goodbye, or start completely over with a slimmer budget and some reasonable business setup. Example: the B.I.A. In their case, of their budget, something less than 10% of the money actually translates to cash or services that make it to the target audience (American Indians). Just write a 3-year friggin' check to each tribe or individual, divide the reservation property up equitably among tribal people, and welcome them with open arms into society. That would be a heck of a lot better for them than what they have now, not to mention save the government some money. It makes me ill how bloated and self-serving the federal government has become.
  16. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 07:23 PM) In order to match Podsednik's production from 2005 Pablo would have to drastically improve his batter's eye and patience this offseason because from what we've seen out of him over the past 2 seasons he can't take a walk to save his life, atleast Podsednik was able to do draw a few walks in '05. We also really don't know what kind of hitter Pablo is, he's a 32 year old with 500 career ABs and one above average offensive season under his belt, he appears to be a pretty good slap hitter but I don't see how anyone can say with any certainty that he can be counted on to hit .280 in a 350-450+ AB season next year simply because his body of work is not substantial enough to be making claims with any certainty. You used the word "certainty" twice. I used the words "likely" and "may". None of this is ever an exact science, much as some of the stat-heads may think it is. Pablo may or may not be able to get there. But I do think that, if you want a lead-off hitter for 2007 that is in the organization and has some speed (to make Oz happy), I think Ozuna, or an Ozuna-Mack platoon, may be the best option in LF until Pods' return. And may be that even after his return.
  17. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 06:52 PM) It may be a stretch, but from watching Pablo play the last few years, I have seen a player who improved a ton in a position that he was not accustomed to playing (OF). I think with proper reps in ST he could become as good if not better defensively in LF than PODS. Also I like his energy at the top of the order, he can actually lay down a bunt, and can hit for average. Looking at the whole picture, offense and defense, I agree that Ozuna would likely be better than 2006 Pods. He may even be close to 2005 Pods, if given more reps in LF. Just don't ever put Ozuna in CF, and make sure it's BA playing CF next to him.
  18. QUOTE(NUKE @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 06:59 PM) Reading all your posts will have that effect on people. This coming from a guy with 3 times as many posts as I have.
  19. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 06:40 PM) Any of you guys see the new Federal Budget? any other "old school" conservatives pissed about how out of control this is? I'm curious. What's the damage? I haven't seen any of those fun articles yet with the pile of idiotic spending items.
  20. QUOTE(Son Goshin @ Feb 4, 2007 -> 01:57 PM) so for those of us without a credit card at the moment (don't ask) well tickets still be available at the actual box office at Comiskey on Feb 16th? i was hoping to go up there and buy a few tix but i wasn't sure if they did that anymore in this electronic age. and if they do, what time does the box office open? They didn't allow that last year, it was all Ticketmaster. Not sure about this year.
  21. The Bears D was on the field for almost 40 minutes against the friggin' Colts, who had 7 drives that started in Bears territory or between the 40's, and still gave up just 22 points (not 29, since 7 of that was on an INT return). Defense was not the problem.
  22. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 08:30 AM) The Hawks were in the Stanley Cup sometimes in the 90's, maybe? You might be right. I know zero about hockey.
  23. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 08:22 AM) INteresting fact. Before last night, when a Chicago team has made an appearence in a championship, they had won 7 straight times, and 8 of the last 9 dating back to the Bears in 86. I must be missing something - who lost? Bears won Super Bowl XX, Sox won in 2005, Bulls won six championships and I don't think any of those three teams lost one. Cubs never went, and I didn't think the Hawks had either. ??? By the way, I have to say again: Rex Grossman = Mike Tomczak
  24. QUOTE(greg775 @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 12:15 AM) I am not this idiotic in real life. None of us are. Its a message board; kind of like driving a car, you lose about 30 IQ points when you start posting in here.
