  1. QUOTE (southside hitman @ May 14, 2014 -> 03:02 PM) Daryl Van Schouwen ‏@CST_soxvan 1m Second-round 2013 draft pick Tyler Danish (3-0, 0.71) getting promoted to Class A Winston-Salem. He's dominated but still worries me they might be rushing him. He's been so good, I don't mind the promotion. My concerns with him are not enflamed by a promotion. I'm more worried about how well more advanced hitters will handle his stuff, and this is a good test. They also supposedly have him on a 100 inning leash this season.
  2. Oops, forgot, that spot in AA is probably Bassitt's when he comes back. And now that I bring it up, he said he'd be back real soon like a month ago, might need to check in on that.
  3. Terry Doyle is 28 year old putting up a 6+ ERA, batters hitting nearly .300 against him and nothing stand-out in his peripherals. This is his 4th year in AA or higher. At this point I'd think they should just release him, put Recchia in there and move Sanchez to Recchia's spot. Doyle was just org filler, but at least you can give the somewhat younger guys a shot to show something. Also frees a spot in Kanny for Brennan to come back or Ball to get going.
  4. Birmingham already underway, Doyle got the start, tied 2-2 in the 4th Scoreboard The night games, all 6:05CT... Leesman for Charlotte Wendelken for W-S Barnette for Kanny (MiLB has it incorrectly as Dykstra)
  5. Just to be clear, the concensus in the scientific community about AGW has been there since the 50's. Was Al Gore around then? Gore was a loudspeaker, he's not a scientist or anyone who has actually changed any scientific results. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 14, 2014 -> 11:49 AM) They said there's nothing we can do to stop it, so... what should we do? You are doing this intentionally, you know that's not really true. It is true that this specific ice shelf cleaving off can't be stopped. It is patently false that nothing can be done about climate change and rising ocean levels. There just has to be the understanding that some of the damage is already programmed in. Using that as an excuse to do nothing is like keeping your hand in a tank of pirahnas because they already got one finger.
  6. That's great stuff from Hahn. Especially encouraged to see the Sox are not going to be quick to move someone like Johnson to the OF.
  7. Wow. Honestly didn't think they'd go there, at least not yet. Good for the team. Small chance someone elects to pick him up with the Sox sending a lot of his contract, but more likely he falls through and signs a MiLB deal somewhere and the Sox are on the hook for all but the MLB minimum of his remaining salary.
  8. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ May 13, 2014 -> 06:40 PM) For minor league pitching or outfield prospects? QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ May 14, 2014 -> 10:55 AM) Probably for next to nothing. Crap prospects/cash considerations. Are we talking Beckham? Then yeah. Ramirez? Then a lot more than that. Gillaspie? More than Beckham, a lot less than Ramirez. All depends on who gets traded.
  9. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 13, 2014 -> 09:23 PM) I thought Admins were serious prospect followers, like you. OK I admit, I can't tell if this is sarcastic.
  10. Recchia and Sanchez both solid again. They both need to move up. Snodgress getting better recently.
  11. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 13, 2014 -> 09:14 PM) And you're an Admin? What the heck does that have to do with anything? Only the serious prospect followers will have a clue who Fuentes is.
  12. I should have added - it is also possible the Sox trade Johnson. Not likely, but not impossible.
  13. The thread. I have to think the Sox are going to trade one or two infielders at some point, and then he comes up. So yeah.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 13, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) I believe by doing so you'd be buying out his entire remaining contract. I believe that depends on whether or not he accepts the assignment. If he doesn't, they can outright him (which does mean he'd be paid the whole contract), or pull him back to Chicago. There is also the issue of options here, I think, and I am not sure if he has any remaining. If not, they can ONLY outright him.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 13, 2014 -> 04:00 PM) You can see him pitch at the futuresox youtube page. Or in Balta's article about Beck and Jaye, near the bottom.
  16. QUOTE (scs787 @ May 13, 2014 -> 02:56 PM) Has there still been any speculation of Micah to the OF?? I seem to remember that as a possibility. Seems unlikely in this case. For one, the guy has never played there - you want to have him make that shift now, mid-season, on promotion to AAA? That's a little nuts. Not to mention that Johnson's elbow issues likely came from bad throwing mechanics, and you want to put him where he's having to make much harder throws? Seems stupid. But not impossible.
  17. With BHAM being at 24, my total guess is... Dan Black, who is struggling, goes back to BHAM to DH (and play some 1B, alternating with Ravelo). That frees the DH spot in Charlotte, which at least for now helps get those infielders regular playing time. Pedroza plays 2B in BHAM, since DeMichele isn't ready. Curley SS, Wagner 3B. A skill infield full of org guys.
  18. Micah Johnson and Nelvin Fuentes to Charlotte. David Cales activated from DL for BHAM. Charlotte roster is full again, and BHAM is at 24. Some things will need to give soon. Charlotte now has Sanchez, Saladino and Johnson in the middle infield. Davidson at 3B, and two 1B/Dh types in Wilkins/Black. That is a tight crowd to get all those people playing time. Then you have Keppinger coming back soon, which would seem to mean Garcia or Semien back to Charlotte - in which case it gets out of control. So what will give? What happens next? Also worth noting, this leaves a void in BHAM. They can have a filler guy there, but DeMichele doesn't appear ready to move up.
  19. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 13, 2014 -> 12:06 PM) No, the response of "OMG THE ICE IS MELTING EVERYONE RUN FOR THE HILLS!" i'm attributing to Al Gore, who started this nonsense that climate change was an issue that would result in immediate, catastrophic problems. It's funny when you read the stories about this study, the fact that it's going to take HUNDREDS of years to melt is very much secondary to the story. It sells better when you say the ice shelf is melting and ocean levels will rise 10 feet and there's nothing we can do about. I think that comes directly from the success of an Inconvenient Truth and the like. It created an entire generation of people who actually think that way, and so of course the media is going to play it up to them. Hell, Balta, who knows this stuff better than anyone, said he would sell his ocean front property. Why? We have 2-300 years until this becomes an issue. And as I said before, whose to say it's going to be an issue then? Who's to say we'll even be on Earth then? Well first of all, it will take a couple hundred years to reach full impact of this particular event. That doesn't mean the effect is zero for 200 years - that means it will go up, all else equal, by that amount, over that time period. Not sure what the curve looks like, but vaguely, if it is 4 feet in rise in 200 years, it is 2 feet in 100, which is plenty to cause some areas major problems. You are also dismissing the fact that there are events like this happening in other places too, and they have an additive effect. If you want to pretend this is some Al Gore conspiracy, go ahead, but the science is pretty clear. This is happening. And I guess for me, I don't like the idea that we're doing significant harm now AND for the future. I'd rather not make things worse for my grandkids in a hundred years. Now, if you want to discuss what to do about it an how, there are all kinds of great discussions to be had there.
  20. Sanchez and Recchia, both pitching today, are guys that are dominating while behind the age curve. Would like to see both move up soon. Sanchez is 24 and should be in A+ or more ideally AA at that age, Recchia turned 25 just after the season started and should be in AA at least.
  21. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 13, 2014 -> 10:04 AM) It'll take hundreds of years. Think about the world 200 years ago. Why do we think coastal cities will still be the norm? Why do we assume we won't have technology to deal with it later? f***ing Al Gore and his doomsday scenario crap. I love that you guys were all over the Bush Admn for fear mongering and you don't see how Gore & Co. startedthe same thing. I'm still waiting for the non-stop category 5 hurricanes and tornadoes we were supposed to get ten years ago. Just want to make sure I understand this... A group of scientists use various mathematical and computer simulations, with hard data available, to show how this ice shelf is cleaving off and will melt and cause oceans to rise... and your reaction is to blame Al Gore?
  22. QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ May 13, 2014 -> 10:16 AM) Ravelo has already contacted Jeff Skilling to put together a futures/commodities trading organization for all the steak dinners and gatorades he has earned or will earn in the future. Some of the lessor talented players will be able to buy these gatorades and steak dinners with their projected minor league meal money at a staggering discount. Rumor is the new joint venture will be called ENROVELO. *like*
  23. QUOTE (balfanman @ May 13, 2014 -> 08:09 AM) This sparks a question from me. I've always liked Jordan Danks as a prospect, mainly because he's an above average defensive CF (I would prefer him over any of the garbage outfielders on the Big League club now) and it seemed he was always one who's bat finally came around after a few months at one level. Is his swing just too long for the majors or what? The follow up question to this would be about his personality. I do not know him personally, nor have I read much about him on a personal level. Is he just too stubborn to shorten his swing, or does he really not have that much offensive potential? Have the hitting coaches been working with him at all,, or does he not listen? I'd appreciate any insight from those more in the know. His swing has always been long, though there is power there. So he did well at lower levels, but more polished pitchers give him trouble. I've seen him try to shorten up on occasion, but not consistently. I don't know his personality either, but I can tell you that making significant mechanical changes to a hitter's swing is not an easy process. Many hitters need to, and only some percentage of those are able to do so and re-establish a consistent approach. Perhaps sometimes it is stubbornness, but I suspect some of the time they simply aren't able to for one or more reasons. I can only theorize what those may be.
  24. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ May 12, 2014 -> 10:50 PM) Couldn't they move Sanchez to SS, make Saladino the backup? Then when Kepp comes back, Garcia can get demoted (even though Semien should I don't think the Sox will do that) and become the super sub, with Saladino back to Birmingham. I don't think they want to do that if they can avoid it. Sanchez and Davidson are still considered prospects, and Saladino has perhaps reached that point as well. None of the three should be demoted. One scenario is to have Micah come up and essentially rotate the four of them around the 3 skill infield spots and DH, so they all get nearly full-time play. Problem with that is, you already have 2 1B/DH's on that roster (Wilkins, Black) - so you may see, for example, Dan Black get shipped back to B-Ham (since he's started somewhat cold), allowing for that flexibility. I just don't see them making Saladino a bench guy or demoting him, at least not yet.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ May 12, 2014 -> 06:38 PM) A few minor league splits I found interesting: Hawkins has dominated RHP this year (.291, 8 HR, 1.011 OPS), but has struggled big time vs LHP (.206, 1HR, .641 OPS) M. Johnson splits (RHP: .438/.532/.969) vs (LHP: .341/.257/.599) Also, I believe Matt Davidson doubled his hit total at home today!! I have a theory on the Hawkins split, based on the research I did for the most recent article I wrote on him. Even with the improvements he has made, he still has a weakness that is somewhat glaring - he usually has a hard time with pitches on the inside edge. On fastballs he chili-dips and flies open, on slower stuff he waves at it because he's too far ahead. Now, if you are a lefty pitcher facing a power-hitting righty who likes to get his arms extended, what is your plan with Hawkins? You run 2-seamers that start over the plate and end up on his hands, all day long. He'll struggle with that. Righties have a harder time with that, because the angle starts them off the plate to get the corner.
