QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 04:12 PM) Looks like the rotating DH is looking more and more definite by the day.. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/...e-in-plans.html http://blogs.suntimes.com/whitesox/2010/01...eve_of_sox.html Ozzie: Sounds to me like he's basically saying, hey, I can have fun with the lineup as is, and do a lot of things. But he's also not saying, anywhere in there, that we won't have a DH. This is why headline writers drive me nuts. The headline says one thing, his quotes say another.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 04:05 PM) I don't understand what the problem is, he's a high OBP, lefty power bat who is willing to sign for cheap and be a platooned DH at this point in his career. He totally fits the mold of a white sox free agent this offseason. Fixed for ya. He's pretty much perfect for the team's needs right now.

QUOTE (AJ Hellraiser @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 03:54 PM) Adam Dunn is really the missing piece to the puzzle.. he's literally the PERFECT fit... power, lefty bat who draws a lot of walks... could hit 50+ homers in The Cell... could play a little first or LF and DH... He's also in the final year of the short contract with the Nationals and I assume could be had if the package is right... what does everyone think it would take to land him? Morel and Retherford? Retherford and a pitcher? What we trade away isn't the issue - it is his $12M salary in 2010. Unless WAS sends back money with him, its not even a consideration for the Sox.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 08:19 PM) Sit down for this one...the White Sox signed Jeff Hulett. He's a utility player, beware Justin Fuller. Possibly the son of former Sox player Tim Hulett? -
Why Carlton Fisk is still my favorite Sox player, ever

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 01:05 PM) No... I had a problem with fisk trying to "one up" Deion. How is yelling and screaming like a lil girl at an opposing teams player just because he doesn't run to first as fast as he would have defending the integrity of the game? Deion should have defended his integrity and punched fisk in his grill. Is it any worse than calling a hall-of-famer a "lil girl", in the name of defending Deion friggin Sanders? -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 12:02 PM) just wrote to inform all related congressman, senators, majority leaders, and the speaker of the house to let them know I'm no longer voting in 2010. May they have as difficult of time finding a job as the rest of us. Achieves very little. Better to vote for someone new, if that's your aim. Though I do applaud that you bothered to write them, not many people do that.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 10:06 AM) I would have liked to see more opposite field hitting by Thome also, but the reality of it is the Sox paid him to hit homers not singles to left. Last year, he started doing that a bit more. He actually hit some soft liners and ground balls to the far left side, on occasion, as I recall. He even attempted a bunt that direction once.

All White Basketball League to Form

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 11:12 AM) That's not racism. IMO, it would be racism if it were a school promoting "pro-black" ideas. In my view, anything that intentionally segregates or collects or admits people based on race, is racism. Again, I am not saying that makes it evil or bad necessarily - but that is what it is. Just my view though. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 09:28 AM) so you don't believe them that they can improve? I don't think you should be making the decisions then. For instance, here is an article on Chicago's version, Urban Prep (again, high success) http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2009/o...tudents-chicago The point of these isn't "we can't get along with white people so we need our own school!", it's about getting these kids to succeed, and they are. Still racism. It may be coming from a desire to do something good, but that doesn't change what it is. As lf said, its sort of a whole different discussion of whether or not its worth it to do that at times. -
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 08:48 AM) Yeah Im still failing to see what is holding the white sox back from signing Thome. If Ozzie wants to rotate the DH spot more he can still do that by sitting Thome vs lefties. It would make the lineup much better, be relatively cheap signing, and bringing back a fan favorite.... They may still do it. I was pretty sure they would, now I'm 50/50. If they go into April with the rotating DH situation, hoping Andruw Jones will have a big comeback, that would be a mistake.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 06:15 PM) They are still pissed they sold us the Louisiana Territory for $15 mil, then we later bought a much, much, smaller area from Mexico for $10 mil. France is pissed at us about the Gadsden Purchase? Jeez, a woman scorn... oh wait, a country scorn... oh whatever, its just some idiot diplomat, probably a guy who got a political favor job and they stuck him somewhere they thought he'd stay out of trouble (Minister of Humanitarian Aid to Haiti?).

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 07:18 AM) I don't know why I get the hell I get when I turned out to be correct all along. I called them cheap last year when KW went into his $.50 speech BEFORE he got Peavy and Rios. So they did have money to burn. It wasn't buried in JR's backyard. He didn't forget he stashed it above the drop ceiling in his office. They had the money. Now payroll is a little higher and they admit, first JR last week, now even Brooks, without 7-11's 500k, they have money for another "established" player. Its not like they have sold more tickets yet. Single games haven't gone on sale. Some season ticketholders that haven't been able to upgrade for years have moved to better locations, so its a good assumption season ticket sales have declined over last season, probably just not at the pace they were anticipating. They are even hawking sponsorships and ballpark ad placement on their website, something I have never seen before, so you would assume they have had more sponsors previously. JR has been quoted as saying he will not lose money to win games. These are all facts. I was correct all along. Bring on Johnny Damon. Right all along? Hard not to be when you manage to argue both "The Sox are cheap and won't spend" and "The Sox have money for other players, see Rios, Peavy". Easy to be right when you are on both sides of the argument.

Boyer in the other article, alluded to the fact that there is money available if needed. And Thome is a pretty perfect fit. Please just go sign the guy.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 09:49 PM) Anderson was defending his own teammates there. That's quite a stretch. Yeah, I know. -
QUOTE (hegong23 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 04:49 PM) If Dayan tears it up this spring could anyone see him making the 25 man and maybe stepping into that DH spot? Maybe even a platoon with him and Kong at 1B/DH. Or is he still a few years out? I feel like expectations for him were higher last year at this point in time than they are now. As others have said, not likely. But... welcome to the board!

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 04:05 PM) I too hate the yanks, but fisk needed to mind his own team's business. How would you like if someone from the yanks said something about the way Beckham plays the game? If I were the yankees pitchers in that game, fisk would have gotten drilled until the benches cleared, then got his face caved in. Keep your nose out of other team's business. Yeah, he's a red sox. And yet, you have an avatar of Brian Anderson getting all up in a Cubs player's business, even though neither were involved in the original problem. Was that Brian's business? Its pretty obvious this is just a personal bias thing for you, and that's fine. Just don't make it seem like its about how the game is played or something. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 01:49 PM) I'm just a little annoyed here. Bush got whatever he wanted through the Senate Dems, including guys who did a lot worse than this guy. Now the Dems can't do squat, and it's actually hurting. Diplomats are missing, a ton of positions at Treasury are still unfilled, the TSA has no head and there are a bunch of other intelligence postions unfilled, and when bad things happen, it's of course the Administration that takes the blame. I'm just somewhat frustrated over how badly the Senate has broken down over the last year. Bush got wars, funding for those wars without any checks, the Patriot Act, multiple Iran Contra criminals, John Ashcroft, Mike Brown, 3 budget busting tax cuts, and his insurance company bailout bill all through the Senate. The Dems can't even get a frankly qualified guy to the TSA. Its nto been the past year, its been many years in the making. I said it when BushCo was in office, and its only more true now... Congress is doing a lot more damage in this country than the Presidents have.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 01:37 PM) After checking, this appears to be an incident that occurred in the 1980's. Simple question...how exactly is this guy disqualified when GWB was able to put damn Iran Contra criminals pardoned by his father into multiple government positions, including those approved by the Senate? Seriously, this guy gets a reprimand and that becomes the excuse to get rid of him, while the Senate approved multiple previously pardoned people for GWB. I guess IOKIYAR. Did I say the others were OK? Are you seriously using the 12-year-old classic excuse of "everyone else is doing it!"? If you are looking for a nominee to run the Transportation SECURITY Administration, you'd think you might want to find someone who hadn't abused power and broken the law in a law enforcement role previously. Call me crazy.

QUOTE (striker @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 11:28 AM) I don't see him coming back and as much as I like Thome I don't want him back. To me he is part of the team that sucked last year. He is part of the problem and not the solution. Key word is "part" as I'm not just blaming him as there were other underachievers. I don't think KW is in any hurry to bring him back since he sent a memo around the waiver deadline saying all of his veterans were available if anyone wanted them. It's time to go in a different direction. I've never understood this mindset. You have a team that underachieves, so you don't want any of those players back, even if they overachieve? I don't get it.

Can we please just sign him, so that we can have a complete lineup and be excited for the season?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 09:48 AM) Or on construction starts being way down... Or a continuing trend of being unsure about the various numbers coming out, or worries on what January will look like for retailers and employers. Any of those are more likely than the Coakley/Brown thing, which if anything, would result in the market running up (which it did yesterday, on the back of a run in health care after the election).
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 09:11 AM) I see, I hadn't even read that about him. Yeah... I'd have to think there is a candidate for this job, somewhere, that hasn't himself showed multiple instances of abusing a position of power in law enforcement.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 08:54 AM) LINK Good, that guy should never have been nominated. Another example of Obama's odd tendency to nominate people with legally or financially troubled pasts.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 08:18 AM) I know. I just found it ironic that he talks about guys who have their best seasons at an old age, but he had his best season at a pretty old age, especially for someone who catches. But he really didn't. His 1985 season was by far his best HR season - but his other numbers were worse than his averages. If he went from 26 to 37 HR, and his average also rose, and other numbers rose, then I'd be highly suspicious. Basically, as far as I can tell, he sacrificed AVG for power.
