Looks like Miranda is pissed about that demotion. He went 3-for-4 last night. Good.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 22, 2008 -> 04:41 PM) I've been thinking about this topic for a while, and finally decided to make a thread about it. I'll start the ball off with this: while reading this article about Charles Grant and his role in the murder and such, I came up with something interesting... Feticide is the killing of a fetus inside the women's body. Now I have a question, why is it okay for millions of women to kill fetuses every day with no penalty, but Charles Grant gets charged with feticide? Now, I know this is comparing apples and oranges, but still. I am pro-life by the way. Who is "Charles Grant"? What is the background we are missing here?

We did this last year or the year before, but, now we have new players. And I think some players changed theirs. Anyone know what Quentin, Swisher or Ramirez have as their intros now? Can anyone recall the existing ones?

Charlotte @ Lehigh Valley, underway. Whiler (5-1, 2.27) goes for Charlotte - trying to continue to prove he's actually good. B-Ham @ Huntsville, 7:05pm CT, McCulloch (1-4, 3.49) gets the start. W-S @ Frederick, in pre-game. Dubee (3-3, 4.07) going for the Hogz. Kanny @ Delmarva, just getting underway. Kevin Skogley, who has only 1 game under his belt (ND, 4.2 IP, 2 ER) gets his second start of the season (was he injured?).

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 22, 2008 -> 03:47 PM) I would think that for me, the electric models would have to get over 100 miles between charges, and not take all night to recharge. Oh, and also cost less than $153,000! That will take a few years, I'd bet. For this year and next, you can either pay a lot ($100k, or maybe $50k next year) to get 200 miles, or pay less (whatever the Volt will cost) but get only 40. After a few years, the technology will allow the two to meet.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 22, 2008 -> 03:47 PM) Tesla's roadster costs $153,000. I didn't say *I* was getting one. I just figured you rich dudes could afford one. Of course, look at what they built - its not meant to be a cheap car. 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, and more importantly, a 220 mile range (4 to 5 times the range of the Volt). The business model, which is smart, is to release the high end car first to generate more revenue, then use that to produce the more reasonably priced versions. The store and factory are in LA, by the way. Their sedan, scheduled for production in their new ABQ plant, I think is going out next year. Its supposed to be a lot cheaper, but, still not cheap.

Miranda was demoted to Kannapolis (where he finished in 2007) a few days ago. He was struggling mightily at the plate so far this year, including a .156 average, .202 OBP and .423 OPS. Paiml was promoted to take his spot at W-S. Miranda just turned 21 in March (Paiml turns 24 in August, for perspective), and was advanced quickly in 2007 (drafted, rookie ball, low A - in one year). Looks like pushing up to High A was just too much too soon. Hopefully he'll get settled in Kanny and get it together again, and be ready for W-S in late '08 or 2009.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 22, 2008 -> 02:08 PM) We are probably about 2 years away from GM having the Chevy Volt on the market, which should be able to do the goal of being rechargeable overnight and being able to run 40 miles per day on batteries, covering most of people's travel demands. It'd be like going 100 miles per gallon or more in terms of the carbon released (depending on the exact source of the electric) and more like several hundred MPG in terms of costs to the consumer. In terms of Toyota and Honda, I honestly don't know. There are companies already out there that are converting Priuses in to those sorts of plug-ins. You don't have to wait that long (Volt) - Tesla's Roadster comes out this year, and their sedan next year. And those 2nd gen hybrids that Toyota and Honda are working on, that are close to 100 mpg territory, are a year or two off.

What the hell is going on in Chicago?!?!?!?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 22, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) And do what? Mandate price controls so that countries stop selling it to us or so that demand shoots right back up? Cut the $1 a gallon that you're paying in taxes on that $7 tank and let the roads you need to drive on fall apart? Go back in time and bury more algae so that the earth produces more oil? I assume that he means something like subsidies. Or maybe windfall taxes on the oil companies. In any case, you'd have to cut down services dramatically or raise taxes, or both, to do anything meaningful. Better to push hard as hell on alternatives, to decrease demand and get us away from foreign oil.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 22, 2008 -> 02:16 PM) classic Dick Durbin. Does it bother you what YOU are doing to us, Dick? Its always been bizarre to me, how Durbin could be so cunning and smart with insider politics (and he is), and yet consistently be so dumb in his public political moves (which he also is). Weird. Also, another thought on this... The Chicago mass transit train systems (CTA and Metra) actually receive less money per mile of rail and less money per passenger from government (all levels) than any other system in the country. And yet, the gas taxes here are the highest. Where the hell is that money going?

If what the bench needs is a lefty bat who kills RHP, preferably one who plays multiple infield positions, and has a little speed maybe... there is a guy who fits that perfectly in Charlotte, hitting .297 with an .813 OPS (.826 vs RHP), ready for call-up. And there are 2 open slots on the 40-man. Just sayin'.

I just want to echo the sentiment that it usually takes a number of years AFTER a Presidency, if not longer, to really put it in historical perspective. I may not think highly of Bush's regime now, but its possible that it may appear different in a different light later. Looking back, for example, I have to give both Clinton and Bush I more credit than I had at the time of their terms.

The 4 Things That Worry Me About John McCain
NorthSideSox72 replied to jasonxctf's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 22, 2008 -> 09:29 AM) The true conservatives will se what he has done down there already and take that as a positive. The true RELIGIOUS conservatives will not be happy with anyone that doesn't fit their narrow mold. As for foreign policy, it could be interesting. However, most negotiating goes on at levels below the Presidency, so it shouldn't come into play too often. Although State dinners could be interesting. I will add, though, that I don't think Jindal takes the job if offered. Why not, in your view? -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 22, 2008 -> 08:36 AM) What has having all white males gotten us for the past 230 years? I don't really think it matters to be honest. Heck in Obama's case they are presenting his race and upbringing as an asset, I don't see how it would be any different in this case. I don't see a different world view as hurting us in foreign policy, because in reality, how many Christian nations are we in super tough negotiations with anyway? The religious conservatives don't really like McCain anyway, but they hate Obama WAY worse. It becomes the lesser of two evils. If they stay home, they get an authentic liberal. To be clear, I could care less. I was more remarking on how others in the voting public would take it. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 22, 2008 -> 08:23 AM) That would be a really interesting answer to both Barack Obama's race and McCains age. Not to mention that they couldn't throw the experience card at him because Obama is just a step above that level and running for President. Certainly does those things. However, let's ask an honest but tough question here... how will a Punjabi and former Hindu go over with the religious conservative crowd? ETA: For that matter, how would having a Punjabi as a VP effect foreign policy? Because that pretty much guarantees you some problems with Pakistan and other countries, potentially. -

So, McCain has some houseguests this weekend at his ranch in Sedona. Potential running mates. Romney and Crist are there, no surprise on those two. But here is one that I haven't heard discussed yet, who will be there: New Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. -
