  2. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 24, 2006 -> 11:20 AM) I, for one, never believed that wasn't part of the long range plans. So it's ok to lie, as long as you don't believe it?
  3. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 24, 2006 -> 02:02 PM) Some sarcasm, some seriousness. What people don't realize is one persons religion is another person's life. No thought is given when people talk about banning the bible based on sensitivy towards certian other religions, but when we talk about other things, other peoples sensitivies get thrown right under the bus. I don't see why there is less right to be a Christian in public than their is a pervert. Who is banning the Bible again? QUOTE(Drew @ May 24, 2006 -> 02:03 PM) A similarly disturbing trend in what kids are reading at school these days, excerpts from a blog post I made about six months ago: At my sister's high school, [st. Charles East] Literature course syllabi list not a single Classic or recent Pulitzer Prize finalist as required reading for 10th graders. Instead, they point our Nation's future to what is quickly becoming the new standard of literary excellence: Oprah's Book Club. Yes, Oprah, the Chicago talk show hostess turned media magnate with the Midas touch. Her official webpage proclaims in its header "Oprah.com is your leading sorce for information about love, life, self, relationships, food, home, spirit, and health." Let's think about this. The soup-to-nuts for all your boggle is a rags-to-riches diva who fawns over celebrities, her monologues so riddled with name-dropping they may as well be razored directly from People Weekly, the woman who gives away more cars at a single taping than Elvis did during all the fat years combined, and uses humanitarian aid as self-promotion. No one person should be that empowered in advice. She did get people to read East of Eden again. That should count for something.
  4. If its school sponsored speech, if the administration schedules it and encourages it, its establishment. If its sponatneous, it's exercising your first amendment rights. Why is this so complicated?
  5. Except we said we would not build permanent bases there. It was a way to sell the war.
  6. When has 100 kids spontaneously getting together to pray been banned?
  7. Yes, but as part of a criminal investigation - the separation shouldn't matter. Whether or not this is excessive is one thing (and it probably is - but then again our administration LOVES excessive action or a lack of it) If the Congressman broke the law and there was probable cause to seek out these papers, by all means I fail to see why this would be any worse than someone raiding your house or office with a warrant.
  8. Something similar existing on the books in the Amnesty act 20 years ago. It wasn't enforced.
  9. Oh they did get a warrant? Well, then why are they b****ing? I know it isn't protocol or whatever, but if they had a warrant - then good for DOJ.
  10. It is Lloyd Bentsen. Benson (Robert Guillaume) is still very much alive.
  11. Oh, they did it without a warrant.
  12. QUOTE(samclemens @ May 21, 2006 -> 05:36 PM) laissez-faire, baby. There is nothing in the phrase "laissez-faire" that would insinuate school prayer.
  13. On "Illinois", Sufjan Stevens' blatantly copies the riff for "Close To You" by The Cure.
  14. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ May 22, 2006 -> 06:43 PM) You got promoted? No, just a bonus.
  15. So I flipped off my boss at work today, and called a co-worker a "goddamned whore" in his presence. What do you think happened?
  16. When we could have had a president who just married rich... twice.
  17. Yes. Although I believe our view is tarnished by the rot at the top and near constantly, there are plenty of good people who work in the government who aren't all about corruption. And who are all about good service. We just don't hear about them? Why? Cause most of them are just doing their jobs.
  18. For some, but not most.
  19. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 22, 2006 -> 01:55 PM) Yes sir, the government is literally almost 100 percent corrupt extremist bureaucrats, regardless of party. And voting for change means nothing since most people just vote along party lines and ignore the candidates anyways. Until we see some honesty and moderation in both parties, things won't change though, and I think things are a LONG way from changing. That's really not true. Although government tends to be a magnet for corruption (at least partially because of the power and money available in public service), I'd venture to say that most lawmakers are not intentionally corrupt. However, the fish rots from the head down and too often, the most powerful ARE the most corrupt.
  20. I'm guessing fewer than that. (The election is in November)
  21. s***ty Congressmen shouldn't be reelected period.
  22. He threw 92 in its bullpen session a couple days ago, I can't imagine pushing him higher than that.
  23. Isn't that what we wore Friday and Saturday?
