  1. Nextproblem child: LEH. And after them WAMU, then Wachovia , no wait AIG. How about both. They are too big to bail out and they cannot finance themselves. But , yes they are too large to COMPLETELY fail.
  2. Still waiting for Obama to cite when he went against the Dems and fought for something his party was against, or reached across the aisle.
  3. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 07:46 AM) Palin Billed State for Nights Spent at Home How much of what she billed was for lodging?
  4. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) says that if Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin ® becomes the first female vice president it will be a "backward step for women." Keep it up, Joe.
  5. Anyone wanting a sense of how Sarah Palin will handle herself in interviews should take a look at this long C-SPAN interview from February (in three parts: first, second, third). (H/T Marc Ambinder) It is of course somewhat Alaska-focused but it’s quite substantive on policy questions, including those that go well beyond state politics. She talks about changes in Medicaid rules, about unfunded mandates, about energy policy, tax policy, environmental issues, and more. For a little sense of her style, here is an answer to the question of who counts as wealthy, which John McCain answered rather clumsily last month. Palin did better: Q: Part of the debate governor has been where do you define middle or upper income families. Is it $75,000, is it $50,000 is it $100,000 or above? Where would you draw the line between middle and upper income when it comes to taxes? A: Well that's a great question because it is so subjective. For us in Alaska the cost of living is quite high so someone making maybe $80,000 in Alaska maybe isn't categorized as wealthy, but maybe that same family making that income in a state where the cost of living is much lower that would be considered wealthy. So that's a tough call but my general philosophy is one of being fiscally conservative and not wanting to see the federal government take more and more of individuals' paychecks.
  6. Rasmussen: "While 82% of voters who support McCain believe the justices should rule on what is in the Constitution, just 29% of Barack Obama’s supporters agree." Their preferred metric? "the judge's sense of fairness." That is scary.
  7. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 09:26 AM) The Obama campaign keeps on the "Bridge to Nowhere" story in a statement from Tommy Vietor: hehe As Glenn Reynolds noted, the New York Times and USA Today noted that Palin "ordered state transportation officials to abandon the ‘bridge to nowhere’ project that became a nationwide symbol of federal pork-barrel spending... She directed the State Transportation Department to find the most 'fiscally responsible' alternative for access to the airport." http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/31...idge_to_Nowhere
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 07:15 AM) http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington...n-poll-wom.html Come on, you know these polls mean nothing now.
  9. -It will be impossible for impaired banks to raise common/preferred debt. -Treasury supply will increase. -Our deficit will increase. -U.S. debt/GDP will not fall and may in fact increase. -Earnings will remain unchanged, at best. -Liquidity is still abysmal. -Hedgies still face liquidation. -Credit spreads more than likely will not tighten significantly. And 1200.75 will not hold on futes. 1170 may, short-term, but I think we see a 10 handle on futes before a 14 handle. Once the Fed starts the printing press, I fear the deflation that will follow the inflation balloon. Cut your debt and preserve your capital.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 09:08 AM) Getting back to the attendence game, apparently Palin out rated Biden 37 million to 24 million. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20080904/D93079DG4.html Actually she outdid Obama. Barry had 4 more networks covering his speech than Palin. So if you account for that she had over 40 million viewers.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 08:56 PM) From the category of "Things that come up when you properly vet a person", it turns out that in the mid 90's, Palin and her husband were members of the Alaskan Independence party, which advocates Alaska bringing up a vote on secession. She was still in contact with their convention earlier this year. Is this comparable to being a member of a black nationalist church for 20 years?
  12. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 09:00 AM) You can't fault the GOP here. They just want to replace Alaska with Iraq as our 50th state. No harm no foul. Wouldn't that be our 58th state?
  13. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 01:44 PM) http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/20...n-jabs-oba.html I already thought that him doing his speech in a different venue than every other democrat at the convention had a nice little touch of arrogance to it, but this is too much. Who does he think he is, Zeus? I swear, sometimes I wonder if Obama is just completely unaware of his weaknesses, or just ignores them. And neither is a good thing. Will they hand out Olive branches?
  14. Word is McCain is making his VP pick today, not publicly, but internally, and they will have an 11:00 A.M. rally Fri. morning in Dayton, Ohio. I believe he will pick Eric Cantor from Virginyaaa. He's pro-life, House Whip, member of Ways&Means, and he is Jewish, which could help in Florida.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 12:21 PM) Interesting that it is good enough for the convention, but not for union votes... Also did you hear the AFL-CIO cancelled all interviews with press yesterday after Hoffa said some of his members would not support a black candidate.
  16. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:38 AM) Here comes Katrina, er I mean, Hurricane Gustav. Its projected path is remarkably like Katrina's. Prices are about to go up 25 to 50 cents at the pump. Just got long the USO.
  17. BROKAW: Well, I think most people understand that, but at the same time, if we work our way off carbon-based fuels, in the meantime, this is not going to happen overnight. PELOSI: No, it isn't, but you could -- again, you could reduce the price at the pump immediately with (inaudible). You can have a transition with natural gas. You can have a transition with natural gas. That is cheap, abundant and clean compared to fossil fuels. *** PELOSI: I'm -- I'm investing in something I believe in. I believe in natural gas as a clean, cheap alternative to fossil fuels. *** PELOSI: Well, that's not -- that is the marketplace. The fact is, the supply of natural gas is so big, and you do need a transition if you're going to go from fossil fuels, as you say, you can't do it overnight, but you must transition BROKAW: Sounds like we’re going to have offshore drilling. PELOSI: No, no, no. No, Nancy the gas will just spew forth from the Earth at the behest of the Great Messiah. Get a F****ng clue already.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 03:04 PM) Who out of the Republican VP field doesn't? Alan Keyes
  19. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 03:00 PM) Anyone have a McCain VP prediction? Newt Gingrich.
  20. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 12:52 PM) Where did you pull the quote from - need to cite it. It was an e-mail from a Messiah supporter to Jim Geraghty in National Review Online Saturday.
  21. This from Peggy Noonan: As he speaks, as he goes on and on and spins his long statements, hypotheticals, and free associations—as he demonstrates yet again . . . that he is incapable of staying on the river of a thought, and is constantly lured down tributaries from which he can never quite work his way back—you can see him batting the little paddles of his mind against the weeds, trying desperately to return to the river but not remembering where it is, or where it was going. Amen!
  22. Let's be clear, Obama Has experience, it's just not Washington experience. What they fear is Barack Obama's Vision— a vision to empower people and to put people first again and they fear his power to inspire and ennoble men to have hope again — to believe again. They know that Barack offers real change (that means change from GOP domination and manipulation) and he offers forward thinking and progressive ideas and solutions to Really solve the current problems facing us today. One of Barrack's greatest assets is that he is unmired [sic] by the trappings of wealth and power that means big oil, as it is imperative that we find an alternative solution to oil, if the United States is to continue to be prosperous and to thrive. All of these attributes are which makes Barack a truly great leader of men, needed for these times! Some men are born for a holy mission, like the young King David who was made king over his older brothers. Their experience or annointing [sic] comes from God, such a man is Barack Drink some Kool-Aid.
  23. MSNBC was the official network of the Obama campaign" [Greg Pollowitz] So says Governor Ed Rendell: Rendell, an ardent Hillary Rodham Clinton supporter during the primaries, now backs Obama in the general election. Brokaw and Rendell began debating campaign coverage, including the on-air comments by Lee Cowan, and when MSNBC came up, Rendell went after the cable network. “MSNBC was the official network of the Obama campaign," Rendell said, who called their coverage "absolutely embarrassing." Chris Matthews, Rendell said, "loses his impartiality when he talks about the Clintons.” At that point, PBS's Judy Woodruff, who was moderating the moderators event, said: "Why don’t we let Governor Rendell sit down." That was met with applause from the crowd of big-time media figures, which included Arianna Huffington, Gwen Ifill, Al Hunt, and Chuck Todd. Woodruff allowed Brokaw to respond, and in defending the network, he said that Matthews and Keith Olbermann are "not the only voices" on MSNBC Right, they have Shuster and Mitchell and Barnicle and Abrams.. Lol.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 06:06 PM) Yay free markets! And even double-yay! Bye Bye getting paid for doing crossword puzzles and watching soap operas, aka. Job Bank. Assinine. The gov't will never see this money again.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 06:01 PM) Well, here's the question we all need to ask. Do we have a high enough tolerance at this point in our lives to play a drinking game with Rudy's speech using 9/11 as one of the phrases? I'm actually worried about casualties from that night. NICE!!!
