  1. Guess who accidentally brought a knife through airport security? Midway didn't catch it, by the way.
  2. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 4, 2011 -> 11:46 AM) I didnt think it was manned by armed guards, or at least thats the intelligence I read. There was a 40-minute fire fight. You've got a few choices, as I see it: complete incompetence indifference active cooperation they all look pretty terrible for Pakistan right now.
  3. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 4, 2011 -> 11:39 AM) I'd argue he infers the second, otherwise he would have just said "no." The second statement is the one that's supported. The first isn't contradicted by what he said, but it isn't confirmed, either.
  4. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 4, 2011 -> 11:31 AM) I agree with the last part. I just think the US should tread lightly here because Pakistan has sizable population and a nuclear weapon. There were a lot of people who supported Osama in Pakistan, if you lay low and dont make noise, its hard for a govt to find you if they dont even know where to look. They already performed a covert military operation on foreign soil without approval or even notification. Pakistan has a sizable population that isn't stupid enough to do something like threaten the US with nuclear weapons. It seems to me this was a very clear "clean up your own house" message from the US in all of this.
  5. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 4, 2011 -> 11:23 AM) Right but even if there was only 1 person in the Pakistana govt helping him, that 1 person knowing could have blown the entire operating. There have been "spies" that have infiltrated the US govt before. If a known murderer was next to West Point but never did anything suspicious, why would he draw any attention? Im pretty sure the US military doesnt go door to door and enter houses just because its close to a military academy. OBL was a little different than a "known" murderer. And I've read that Pakistan was going door-to-door in that area. They're a quasi military dictatorship, ffs. They've professed time and time again to be helping the US, but it just doesn't stand up to scrutiny. That doesn't mean 100% of the ISI is in bed with Al Qaeda or the Taliban, but that a significant portion is or at least turns a blind eye.
  6. Neither of those statements are contradicted by what Panetta said, but only one of them is supported by it.
  7. The Unwelcome Return Of the Torture Debate
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ May 4, 2011 -> 11:03 AM) So we had gathered all this evidence and tracked a courier there, and we only were 80% certain. That doesn't prove any point about why the pakistanis should have known. I'm not saying they didn't. But I'm not so sure they were so obviously hiding that they knew his whereabouts. Because he was down the street from their intelligence services in a city they tightly controlled? Because there's a decent amount of evidence of collusion with radical Islamists in the recent past? I don't think the US would keep Pakistan completely in the dark and risk a huge incident (one of their planes attacking the helicopters) if they didn't have good reason not to trust them.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 4, 2011 -> 09:41 AM) Are you reading the news at all? The planners of this gave it a 60-80% chance that he was there on the day of the mission. They didn't KNOW anything. They suspected that someone important was there, and they guessed it was him, and only since last August. Yeah, there was a huge risk in being wrong about that. The CIA went and had the evidence reviewed again by an independent team who also agreed with the ~80% likelihood, so they went ahead with the mission.
  10. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 4, 2011 -> 09:37 AM) I don't understand this because it doesn't feed the narrative. lol, this is an awesome post.
  11. The problem with those three examples is that they all came about 4-5 years too late.
  12. so any definitive word on Rose's ankle?
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ May 3, 2011 -> 10:47 PM) Nepotism Night would be great. Everyone that has a job because of their dad would receive either an Oney Bobblehead or a KW Jr. Bobblehead :lolhitting
  14. It's ok, we're just 10 games back, it's only early May!
  15. I'm sorry I gave my parents the terrible Christmas present of White Sox tickets.
  16. someone on this team needs to perform seppuku. Or maybe the whole roster.
  17. RIP 2011 White Sox season, we barely knew ye.
  18. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 3, 2011 -> 09:03 PM) Yeah I was wondering where all that was coming from with the claims about it vindicating waterboarding and whatever (btw this article says waterboarding had nothing to do with it and then says where it might have). All they got was the guy's nickname which was kind of "hey we might have something."We don't even know if they gave up that info while actually being waterboarded. It may or may not have slightly contributed to the full mission and we don't even know if the information actually came from waterboarding since they were also interrogated other times. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement or anything. It's kind of an irrelevant point in terms of the big picture. It was just political *rah*rah* "my team is #winning!"
  19. FYI, torture isn't what led us to OBL.
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ May 3, 2011 -> 02:08 PM) Whoa, this is crazy http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/2011/05/...unterterrorism/ saw that yesterday, interesting stuff.
  21. "It's funny because I was about to kill him" lol Colbert
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 2, 2011 -> 10:31 PM) I know it's no competition, but I agree fully with Milkman and really really was disappointed in Badger's position until his last couple posts. I really don't think our celebrating means jack s*** world-wide. The world HATES us anyway and will always hate us. Extremists want to kill us desperately. How many countries have never paid us back? Isn't Sweden the only country to ever pay us back the money they owed us? We are HATED by the world. Focusing on "OMG! What will they think of us?!" is the wrong reason to do or not do something.
