  1. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 10:28 PM) In what way? As Trump ranted and rambled in Phoenix, his crowd slowly thinned Honestly, it doesn't sound all that more insane than any of his daily campaign rallies were. It's just that's still a really high level of insanity and now he's doing it while he's President. Shame about the police shooting peaceful protesters with tear gas and rubber bullets, though.
  2. I didn't watch the video so I don't know if this story is covered in it or not, but Why those Confederate soldier statues look a lot like their Union counterparts
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 01:21 PM) I came to respect it because I hated it, but they kept putting in the time and last season I thought it was pretty good. Then, you expect it to pay off when he reunites with people whom his valuable information could help, and instead we get "I see things, lots of them, you once said this, I must go back now thanks" don't forget the creepiest part, "hey sis I watched you get raped, you were so beautiful that night"
  4. Hey, we're only at 32 Friedman Units, it takes at least 40 to finally turn that corner.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 10:07 AM) We have been in Afghanistan longer at this point, haven't we? Soviets were there for 10 years. We're coming up on 16.
  6. "Why did some character do something stupid or completely against the nature of their character as established in the previous six seasons?" Because the writers are bad and are just using the plot as a way to get from big set piece to big set piece. Gotta agree with everything jenks said. Just going to enjoy the rest of the series as a comic book movie form of entertainment (fun, exciting action with a loose 'plot' and the major characters never really in danger) rather than what it was in seasons 1-3 or 4.
  7. What maester was at East watch? I thought the whole thing with Sam was him becoming the maester for the night's watch? If there's been a maester there the whole time, why doesn't the citadel believe the army of the undead exists? Benjen ex machina was awful too
  8. It feels like the show has become a series of plot bullet points they jump through along with "wouldn't this look cool??"
  9. Yeah, and we used to play the rental game, but we do haul a decent amount for around the house and plan to do more with bikes, kayaks etc.
  10. Trump took two days to weakly condemn domestic terrorists, but he's quickly condemned the attacker in Spain for reference, he is talking about supposedly dipping bullets in pig blood and executing people with them, which a) is a terrifying thing for the president to be endorsing and b) probably didn't even happen
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 10:02 AM) Well, a lot more people agree with him than not and people have an intense attachment to status quo. Those same people won't have patience for the nuanced discussion of how these statues went up half a century after the civil war in response to civil rights advances. How they often explicitly were put up to establish white dominance of the community. Or about how neighbors in their community feel when they have to walk by a statue of Judge Taney before walking into a courthouse, author of the most awful majority opinion in United States history. They know the statues have been there and, after all, it's just history. But that history is f***ed. The civil war history I learned in the suburbs of illinois was so sanitized in the same ways these statues were intended to sanitize history. It's the same crap. The handwringing over the march to the sea. Same playbook we see know. "Well of COURSE slavery is bad, we all agree on that, but the north wasn't so perfect either!". And it works like a charm. I know you've mentioned McPherson's Battlecry of Freedom before, so I thought you might like to read this essay that the NY Review of Books ungated today by McPherson regarding Lost Cause revisionist history. http://www.nybooks.com/articles/2001/04/12/southern-comfort/
  12. edit: that's just my speculation but it's based on major spoilers
  13. Apparently HBO Spain released (accidentally?) the entire next episode, so of course a bunch of people grabbed it and were streaming it. Lots more spoilers confirmed. Some pretty hokey looking CGI.
  14. All that said it's probably a good idea for me to take a break from posting back here for a bit
  15. That wasn't my claim! However I can be an ass and may have been communicating my point very poorly.
  16. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 03:48 PM) How about the posters who didn't vote for Trump and have never spoken a positive word about him that are still constantly grouped and berated into the enablers, racists, Nazis, wishing sickness and death upon the American public? Nobody is allowed to post a different thought without getting railroaded. That's why no new people ever post in the Buster. I had enough personal attacks that I had to step away, see what happens now. I was going to use you earlier actually as a positive example of my point, but the convo had died down and I didn't want to revive it. Clearly Trump went too far for you (and others here like ss2k5 jenks and probably others) to vote for him despite typically preferring Republican policies. Sixty million others have that threshold somewhere below yours, and Trump didn't hit it.

  18. President on TV defending the Nazi torch carriers from Friday night. How is this so much worse than his original response. How.
  19. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 03:35 PM) Quality presser, 45. He's doubled down on his "both sides" response to a Nazi terrorist killing an innocent person "Kelly will make him fall in line!"
  20. Appalachia covers a huge, huge area. The idea that a random sample is going to hit any sort of significant inbreeding seems...unlikely. What is the generic ranking of Ivanka vs a random Hinsdale resident? Or a random Elgin resident?
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 03:17 PM) Btw, Trump is on camera right now defending the white supremacists at Charlottesville. Saying many were good people. He had to "wait for the facts," something he never does in any other context. Politico was also reporting earlier that his prepared remarks on Saturday were similar to what he said Monday but he deliberately chose to go off script.
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 03:17 PM) Btw, Trump is on camera right now defending the white supremacists at Charlottesville. Saying many were good people. Good f***ing lord.
  23. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 03:09 PM) I find it interesting that multiple posters continue to harp on raBBit for his genetics comment when we all know the point he was trying to make, while StrangeSox accused everyone who voted for Trump to be racist or racist enablers and implied they were bad people and yet not one of the hardcore liberals on this board called him out for it. In fact, most of them came in and defended his ridiculous statement. As a liberal I don't always agree with raBBit's point of view, but I think he deserves better treatment than he gets around here. There is definitely a bully culture on this subforum with the hardcore liberals leading the charge. It really sucks because I come here to learn about issues and opposing perspectives, including raBBit's, but it quickly turns into a groupthink exercise where the same four or five posters aggressively force their opinion down everyone's throats (as if it were fact) without really giving the other side a chance to explain their views & opinions. If you voted Trump your vote helped give a racist immense power regardless of the reason you personally voted for him. I'm not sure why calling that enabling is so objectionable but I'm not attached to that phrase.
  24. Why are we assuming that some random woman from Appalachia is horribly inbred to the point that she's genetically inferior? When did incest even enter into the argument (aside from my hapsburg joke)? The original back and forth was over economic status/ability to provide.
  25. Are we also now arguing that geographical location within the US is genetically meaningful?
