Just came here to post that. http://deadspin.com/unsealed-court-documen...-was-1783508016 From the unsealed documents:
-
I think the comments are especially weird given how she's strongly rejected any suggestion that she should retire when she can guarantee that a Democratic president can replace her with a like-minded individual to ensure her judicial legacy.

First he co-opted Charles Limbaugh's fascistic "America First" slogan, now he's going after Wallace's slogan.

GOP platform also includes a plank to turn over all federal lands (so national parks, national forests, national monuments, BLM lands etc.) to state governments, where they'd definitely then be opened up to development and sold off to private industry. Oh and a plank to remove species like the grey wolf from the endangered species list. Coal is also now a "clean source of energy" I swear, the motivating factor behind modern conservatism seems to be "this'll piss of those libtards!" and little else

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Jul 11, 2016 -> 11:29 AM) Evan Bayh did as much to block his own party from doing certain things as anyone who wasn't a Republican, or Joe Lieberman. I remember when he retired, it was some sanctimonious bulls*** about how the "environment had deteriorated" or something, and he was otherwise pretending like he had nothing to do with that. NO LABELS! (but lots of lobbyist cash please!)

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 11, 2016 -> 11:23 AM) I might give you the healthcare shindig but marriage and abortion do not effect your life one way or the other. Listen, the SC ruled in ways that don't explicitly favor movement conservatives three times recently in the past 45 years. This proves that it's been a liberal court this whole time. Speaking of gay marriage, the GOP platform committee is meeting today, and so far they're going all-in on anti-SSM, bathroom BS, and anti-gay adoption. eta: also part of the official GOP platform now: Internet porn is a public health crisis eta2: oh and a proposal to specifically recognize LGBT people as targeted by ISIS failed. A "conversion therapy" amendment, on the other hand, passed. Way to quintuple down on the LGBT hate, GOP!

QUOTE (brett05 @ Jul 11, 2016 -> 08:48 AM) No conservatives would agree with that. YOu look at all the liberal positions that have happened from the SC over the years and it's liberal. Abortion Government Marriage Healthcare to name just three. I don't care if they'd agree with it or not--they're factually wrong. The flip side to that would be: Abortion (everything up to the decision last week was a weakening of abortion rights, and if Texas's law wasn't struck down, then Roe would essentially be meaningless) I'm assuming you mean gay marriage? Yeah, the tides have shifted there. Healthcare--Roberts was able to gut the Medicaid expansion, but otherwise a pretty procedural ruling. On the flip side, you've got: Shelby County, probably the worst decision I've seen Bush v Gore, a close runner-up The above mentioned gutting of the Medicaid expansion for pretty odd reasons Citizens United Heller and Miller Hobby Lobby A series of rulings including AT&T vs Concepcion gutting class action lawsuits and strengthening mandatory arbitration clauses Several Bush-era PATRIOT Act or similar domestic spying programs A court with Alito, Scalia, Roberts, Thomas and libertarian-conservative Kennedy is a court with a pretty decent conservative lean. Going back further, the court really only gets more conservative until you hit the early 70's. The only way this period could be defined as a liberal court would be to define a conservative court as one that issued rulings favorable to movement conservatives 100% of the time and anything else as liberal.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 05:35 PM) The "we shall overcome" hashtag was way over the top...any time you throw MLK's legacy into current times, it's not going to end well for a police group. The irony is that the non-violent protest strategy pioneered by Gandhi and MLK against police and military forces was exactly what allowed the Civil Rights struggle to reach a tipping point where the majority of white/silent America became appalled at the lack of humanity shown by those who were supposed to be protecting ALL Americans, equally. Bull Conner, George Wallace, fire hoses, police dogs, etc. Not in good taste at all, and borderline incendiary in today's politically-charged climate. Otoh something that helped mlk was that he had guys like Malcolm x as a counterbalance -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 02:05 PM) Got a new dishwasher. I still think that while they are slicker and less broken, the one thing nice about the locking dishwashers was knowing what was clean/dirty. Ours his a little light it projects on the floor when it's clean.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 12:26 PM) When I just did that, the liberal feed was a bunch of news reports on who the shooter was, articles about how the Dallas PD is a model police force and about the man that police sent out initially (and incorrectly). The conservative one is a bunch of breitbart articles about how Obama is terrible. Yes, that is a pretty accurate statement of where we are. HUCKABEE EXPOSES SICK FACT ABOUT OBAMA'S RE... QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 10:21 AM) I think its pretty obvious from whats going on right now. It may not have surfaced everywhere but its simmering in a lot of places and can come to a head anywhere at any time just like last night. Not trying to be dramatic but that is the truth of what is going on right now. Its pretty historic. Eh it's still at least an order of magnitude less intense than what was going on in the 60's. -

I've been reading Nixonland off and on over the past couple of months. It just keeps getting more surreal as the mid-late 60's and 2016 overlap. Bizarre, clownshow political campaigns, "nothing matters" politics, law-and-order and racial unrest, now even police snipers. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 08:50 AM) Man I hope they don't get sued for that. It's really unusual, but in the end is it all that different from SWAT rushing in and shooting him? QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 08:24 AM) At least I read one nice thing today: George Hunter @GeorgeHunter_DN According to Dallas police, protesters helped capture the shooters. And cops helped shuttle protesters to safety during the attack. Absolutely. There's video out there of one of the shootings that the local Fox affiliate aired live. Don't know if the officer shown is one of the ones who died, but it did not look good. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 08:33 AM) It is a robot carrying a bomb or a robot that is a bomb? It was the bomb squad robot they'd normally use to remotely investigate bombs. Instead, they strapped a bomb to it and detonated it near the suspect because they felt they had no safe way of approaching him and that he wasn't going to be taken alive either way. He had also been claiming that there were IED's scattered throughout the area. -

I'm still a little amazed that the "robot bomb" thing. I've never heard of anything like that. -
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 08:09 AM) The SC doesn't have a liberal lean, and hasn't for eons. Up until recently there have been 4 staunch neocons and 4 staunch liberals on the bench, and one right of center republican, as I'd call him. Notice I didn't call 8 of them republicans or democrats, because those ones are extreme leaning. Even then, it still mixes up sometimes. There was an important 4th amendment case a couple of weeks ago with Breyer joining the more conservative wing of the court. How the constitution/laws/administrative rulings/case law should be interpreted and understood isn't agreed upon, though. Conservative legal institutions like the Federalist Society and have a staunchly different view of how the constitution should be understood, and this filters back to ideological preferences. Being a liberal probably means that you're going to disagree with a "strict constitutionalist" legal position that holds most federal regulations are unconstitutional. Neoconservatism is mainly focused on foreign policy and wouldn't really have much to do with court decisions. I'm definitely much more of a legal realist than a legal formalist, though. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_realism

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 08:19 AM) I believe it was 4 guys. Not really clear from the press conference, and they said they weren't answering questions due to it being an ongoing investigation. But right now, the latest word was 1 dead who was for sure a shooter and 2 others in custody, but I still don't think it's entirely clear (at least publicly) how many shooters there were. In a place like that, big buildings creating corridors, you're going to get all kinds of loud echos and it'll be next to impossible to tell where the shots are actually coming from. It's conceivable that one guy firing from an elevated and concealed position could shoot 12 people in a crowded area before anyone really knows what's going on. -

StrangeSox replied to LittleHurt05's topic in The Filibuster
So not a ton of new info out of the press conference, my main takeaways were: 1) One suspect dead, blown up by robot bomb after hours of negotiation broke down 2) Suspect claimed to be unaffiliated with any group and acting alone, though the chief implied he was skeptical of this latter claim. Was angry about the police killings and wanted to kill white people and especially white officers -
QUOTE (brett05 @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 08:02 AM) I agree, only it needs to be conservative. The SC has made too many mistakes already because of it's liberal lean. We need one right now just for balance. The court has been majority conservative for at least a couple of decades now. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/02...in-decades.html

Just saw an update on NBC 5, 12 officers shot, 5 dead, 1 suspect dead, 2 in custody. No mention of other suspects still out there.
