Not every Democrat or person who votes for a Democrat is a liberal. Cuomo's father was, but Cuomo isn't. eta: NYC also voted Rudy Guiliani and Michael Bloomberg into the mayoral office for almost two decades

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 12:49 PM) But what we should/shouldn't have to do and what is reality are two different things. That's my point. It's just common sense to deal with asshole cops, keep your mouth shut, have a s***ty 5-10 minute experience and then move on with your life. You arguing about it and fighting back never, ever works. Ever. It's not worth the effort. Fight back after the fact with a lawsuit and/or complaints to the department. "she was resisting arrest" "I felt threatened" "she assaulted me" Lawsuits also cost time and money and may never lead anywhere. kerr's a law professor writing on a law blog, so I think his point is to question the law and court rulings behind some of this.

Well that's exactly Orin's point, that we shouldn't be forced to comply with anything a cop says or otherwise face fear of physical assault and imprisonment. There's also the times where the person obeys the cop's request and still gets shot.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 22, 2015 -> 09:33 AM) Another pretty messed up story with Sandra Bland. Pulled over for a simple traffic violation (not signaling for a lane change to get out of the officers' way), eventually dragged to the ground by the cop after he threatened to "light her up" with his stun gun, booked in jail over a weekend and found dead of a claimed suicide 3 days later. Questions have been raised about whether this was a suicide or a murder, and the Texas Rangers and FBI are looking into it. The arrest was caught on film by a bystander, and the police eventually released the dash cam footage. However, the footage from the police looks to have been edited. Bland was originally from Naperville and was in Texas to interview for a new job. Sandra Bland and the “lawful order” problem

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 10:07 AM) Except that is was done BY the liberal/labor/left. Left-liberals generally have no love for Cuomo. eta: see his feud with De Blasio, for example, who's definitely to Cuomo's left.
-
Lots of liberal/labor/left reaction has been skeptical of this, wondering if it was done intentionally for one industry in order to create a divide within the broader movement for a livable wage. There's already national, state and city differences in minimum wage, and now you throw industry differences as well. Not exactly a good model going forward if you want a universal minimum wage increase. edit: new minimum wages should also be indexed in some way, not static, otherwise you have to have these same battles forever.

Doing this specifically for food service workers is pretty dumb.

Rod Blagojevich officially facing federal corruption charges
StrangeSox replied to Steve9347's topic in The Filibuster
Appeals court tossed out a handful of his convictions the other day, some interesting legal analysis here. He'll still be in jail for a while on the other charges. Long story short: Blago trying to trade appointing Jarrett to the Senate (as Obama's replacement) in exchange for an appointment to Obama's cabinet isn't illegal. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 22, 2015 -> 12:16 PM) Black officers it looks like. Maybe the guy who charges in? The first officer looks hispanic to me. Doesn't really matter though, structural racism gets internalized by everyone regardless of race. Plus, in the words of NWA:

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 22, 2015 -> 12:07 PM) I get the point, but in a sense it's meaningless. We're all supporters of child labor given our continued support of mobile technology (or really any cheaply made goods). But it's not like we're going to change anytime soon despite our collective agreement that child labor is a terrible thing. I think it's difficult to judge non-slave owning people back then since we're all doing the same exact thing now. I don't think it's meaningless, though. We are complicit in some of the terrible labor practices around the world today, and it is a collective moral failure.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 22, 2015 -> 12:02 PM) I don't believe it was everyone in the world. But looking at the south, if you were a transportation company shipping raw cotton to the mills up north, you were dependent on slaves. If you built the boats that the shipping companies used etc. That was why the end of slavery would destroy the southern economy. It wasn't just slave owning plantation owners that would suffer. The blacksmith that repaired their equipment was doomed. The small farmer who provided produce to the plantation who didn't own slaves needed their biggest customer. This isn't an indictment of them, just a perspective on why change was so difficult. There's no reason to assume that agriculture would just instantly stop if slave-owning plantation owners suddenly had to actually pay their workers instead of owning them as animals. There's still cotton fields in the south.

NYPD officers beat young black man who had his hands up over allegedly-stolen pizza

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 22, 2015 -> 11:47 AM) By this logic everyone in the world was a de-facto slave owner because everyone bought southern goods made/sourced by slave labor which then provided the financial resources necessary to continue the practice. New York's wealth was built on trading goods made by slaves. Britain may have abolished slavery in their country and colonies, but they still bought tons of Georgia cotton. etc.

The editors really have no clue what the issue is. The brother of a former high-level government official's extra-marital activities are not even close to being some sort of "public interest."

I still don't get why not backing down from saying incredibly stupid things is supposed to be some sort of virtue. Remember when trump was leading the birther movement?

Limbaugh is defending trump now, lol nyt

So there's a mural in a courthouse in Baker County, Florida that depicts heroic Klan members. It was painted in 2001.

Over at the Volokh Conspiracy, Eugene Volokh is serializing a recent law article by Judge Alex Kozinski that examines various problems in our criminal legal system. I've only read the first two parts, but so far it's been good: 12 reasons to worry about our criminal justice system, from a prominent conservative federal judge

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 03:58 PM) I prefer SWA when I fly for sure. I know it is a love/hate airline, but I love them. I love them too, but I was really happy with Alaska recently. Same 737-700's and 800's as Southwest, but the seats are nicer (built-in adjustable headrests, 120VAC and USB charging ports on every seat). Obviously more limited flight selection, but I'd recommend them if they were an option for anyone.
