Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 03:09 PM) Which would be interesting, but it appears your study looked at how police classified the shootings, not the eventual trier of fact at a trial. here is the actual study: http://econweb.tamu.edu/mhoekstra/castle_doctrine.pdf but you'd need for the police classifications to be systematically biased one way or the other for that to matter. If, on the whole, the number of murders falsely categorized as justified homicides is roughly equal to the number of justified homicides falsely categorized as murder, then there's no problem. Do we have a reason to believe that the police would, on the whole, bias their classifications one way or another? That bias need not be conscience, but I don't know of a good reason to presume it exists and is strong enough to influence the results.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) We'll agree to disagree on the first part of that response, but with regards to the study that's basically a "we don't know" answer. That's what I thought when I first heard it on the radio yesterday, but after re-reading it I see that they're saying something else. That part I quoted started off by positing several different potential causes, but they ultimately ruled the others out. Criminals weren't bringing more guns/becoming more violent themselves and there wasn't an uptick in justifiable homicides. SYG seems to have increased the likelihood of violence/death overall but without a corresponding increase in legitimate cases of self-defense, meaning there's more unjustified vigilantism going on.

Penn State horror story
there's a post over on Volokh that's friendly to Corbett's cause, but the comments are generally not very kind: http://www.volokh.com/2013/01/02/pa-gov-co...-its-sanctions/ the complaint is available here: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/550546-corbett.html It mostly amounts to whining about how this will hurt PSU Football and how awesome PSU Football is.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
criminals don't deserve extra-judicial deaths (death period imo but w/e), but the study looked at justifiable homicide rates as well to balance that out. further in the NPR story:

I thought they weren't allowed to come via cuts to other athletic programs but that it was still ultimately coming from the general athletics fund/budget, which is not state-funded?

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (farmteam @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 02:04 PM) I think Duke's right and we're all just living in the matrix. I'm totally all right with it as long as we get to reenact that badass scene in the first one where Neo and Trinity shoot up the lobby. StrangeSox, you can be Neo, and SS2K5 you can be Trinity...don't deny it, you two, you know you look good in tight leather.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 01:23 PM) Duke's post are very radical however I still agree with his main point. Federal government should not have too much control or regulation in general. This is just one issue but it applies to everything. Advocating for a limited government is different than saying the only reason we haven't been trampled under the boot of tyranny is because of guns, or bizarrely arguing that Japan's domestic gun control laws had anything to do with their East Asian and Pacific conquests.

The Democrat Thread
liberals' sophie's choice probably SSM because we're currently in a straight-up violation of civil rights and I don't think a state-by-state solution to gun control legislation will be particularly helpful, especially given Chicago's bleed-over into a neighboring state.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
So duke's post was bad without having to invoke "Godwin's Law" because his argument was crap and didn't flow logically, not because he specifically brought up Nazis. Overuse of "Godwin's Law" can serve to shutdown any legitimate discussions of or comparisons to the Nazis, their methods, their society and their ideology. The Nazis shouldn't be treated as some sort of unique, incomparable thing.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 01:00 PM) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law I'm not a big fan of "Godwin's Law." It serves to separate the evils of the Nazi regime as some other-wordly horror, something un-human.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 12:36 PM) I was honestly just trying to beat him the punch. You know once slavery is brought up its essentially a race to the Holocaust. idgi the racist history of gun control, that it was primarily used to keep guns out of the hands of blacks who actually were being violently repressed by the state, is a huge point in your favor. but you're objecting to me bringing it up? bizarre.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
as long as we recognize that duke has admitted that whitey is, in fact, guilty.

Catch-All Anything Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 12:29 PM) I'm betting most people who don't care about the inconvenience only travel a couple times each year. This meaningless "rule" is quite annoying for those of us who are on 30 plus business trips per year. ^^

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 11:59 AM) Because at one time there was thought to be a risk. As the article stated, they are reviewing it to be certain there are no risks whatsoever. In the meantime, they have more important issues than whether or not Trixie can check her Facebook while the flight's landing. the FAA has supposedly been reviewing that rule forever. let me read my ebook, damn it.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 12:22 PM) I realize that, but I'm sick of liberals talking about race. I'm sick of hearing about it. Leave it alone, quit bringing it up like someone is paying you to. nah.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 12:14 PM) What an awful world they live in, where they don't have to fear getting killed by a gun. Those slaves to the state. The founding fathers would be rolling over in their graves if they only knew that democratically elected governments would someday reduce gun violence to nothing. But don't you see, it's their gun laws that allow their fascist (?) governments to launch wars of aggression and to abuse the civil liberties of their citizens. Unlike in the US, where the government has a strong fear of its own armed population and therefore is less militaristic and violent.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 12:05 PM) Oh quit trying to paint this as a race thing. Goddamn. Dude, that's a point against gun control as far as I'm concerned. Historically, gun control has some pretty racist roots. Just like drug bans. step back and realize when I'm actually bringing up something that's directly in your favor.
