  1. You've used that lame line twice in the last few days now. I'm not sure why you're taking my stated opinions as declarations of fact. Do I need to preface everything with a lengthy disclosure that what follows is only an opinion?
  2. I wasn't speaking specifically of social issues. Scalia is a hack in all fields.
  3. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 11:44 AM) Not as many no. I can't even remember the last majority opinion he wrote. And that's great, I disagree. I think he's relatively consistent and a good judge, even if I don't always agree with his decisions or how he justifies the decision. http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/author.php?Thomas
  4. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 11:35 AM) I agree. However, if you were to tell me that more gun control laws would lower these murder rates but would not solve mass murders, I'd sign on in a heart beat.
  5. Thomas doesn't actually write opinions and dissents? Yeah, every judge has to look at the facts of the case before him, but that doesn't mean that no judge could possibly be a hack. Scalia is, in my opinion, a hack, unlike the rest of the Justices, including the other conservative ones.
  6. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 11:30 AM) I don't think you could read his comments or opinions in cases like lawrence and not come to the conclusion that he believes that gay acts are immoral. Yeah, he's gone on about the "gay agenda" before. Scalia wants that issue to be a "States Rights" issue for the same reason racists want the Civil Rights Act to be a "states rights" issue.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 11:27 AM) Name me a judge that isn't like that. That's the only way to be a judge. It's funny because of his whole supposed judicial philosophy that explicitly claims he doesn't do that. I don't think someone like Thomas, for example, is the same as Scalia in that sense. I agree with probably even less of what he says, but he's at least consistent. Scalia simply makes s*** up as he goes to justify his conclusions and even tosses in tangential political rants into dissents at times.
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 11:26 AM) I realize why there was a bigger reaction. But IMO the everyday gun violence is a way bigger issue than mass shootings, but since the everyday violence is secluded to a few bad neighborhoods, the majority of people don't concern themselves with it. I would be very happy with gun control that addresses that problem as well. Like strict handgun controls and a national registration that could crack down on straw purchases.
  9. Scalia's only consistency is in consistently finding ways to fit the law to the conclusions he'd prefer. He's a standard reactionary conservative and judges that way.
  10. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 10:55 AM) The same amount of students are killed nearly every year in Chicago. I don't see much outrage over that. I'm pretty sure multiple people in this thread have pushed back against the pro-gun excuse of "well if you take out gang-related shootings..." because we should care about that violence as well. But, yeah, a single mass event where 20 children are slaughtered is going to cause a different reaction.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 09:06 AM) Grim milestone: Austin shooting apparently 500th homicide in Chicago Just think if we registered and fingerprinted gun owners! And banned handguns! Problem solved. Nobody in this thread has even once commented on how local bans are not effective when surrounded by areas with looser restrictions, it's true. Just think, though, that if we registered and fingerprinted gun owners nation-wide and kept a national registry and decreased the ability to buy handguns in the first place, maybe there wouldn't be so many of them flooding the streets.
  12. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 11:15 AM) I think he views that as a social issue that should be decided by the states, not 9 people in robes. He's pretty consistent with that general philosophy in his opinions.
  13. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 12:53 PM) By the way, it was revealed that the CT shooter only used handguns and left his .223 Bushmaster in the trunk. So much for HIGHLY DETACHABLE SEMI-AUTOMATIC BULLET HOSE ASSAULT CLIPS INVENTED TO MURDER CHILDREN story we've been hearing, the guy used guns you could've bought during the 94 ban. sweet, I'm already on board for a handgun ban.
  14. Got Planet Earth (UK version) plus a Blu-Ray player for Christmas. After seeing my wife's uncle's 70" TV and then watching these on my 40", I'm thinking it's time for an upgrade in the near future.
  15. Yes, "decrees" usually contain weak statements like "seems"
  16. a thread about yet-more gun violence seems to be an appropriate place to comment on gun control and the absurdity of anti-gun control arguments.
  17. I/ll stop with the condescending remarks directed towards Wayne LaPierre for his tasteless and classless speech last Friday as soon as he starts supporting some meaningful gun control.
  18. another fine law-abiding citizen. armed guard in every fire truck, plus it's Mortal Kombat's fault.
  19. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Dec 23, 2012 -> 05:11 PM) Yep. There's also a lot that people don't know about that program... but don't let those facts get in the way of a massive "boondoggle"... I know, it's like shooting 3 foot bass in a 1 inch barrel for you. Ok...?
  20. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Dec 23, 2012 -> 05:07 PM) I'm glad you know so much about it. It's pretty easy to find any number of reputable sources reporting on how big of a boondoggle that plane is.
  21. A non-gun owner's guide to guns terminology etc. if you're unfamiliar and would like to understand more.
  22. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 02:26 PM) VIDEO GAMES ARE TO BLAME. LIKE MORTAL KOMBAT. WHERE ALL CHARACTERS USE GUNS. ALL TWO OF THEM. THOSE f***ING POLICE CHARACTERS. Sub-Zero could have defended himself if he was armed!
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 01:56 PM) There was an armed guard at Columbine. There may have been some armed and trained people at Ft. Hood, too.
