  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) What is cringe-worthy about saying that culture is a thing that influences people? Do you think you'd be the same person making the exact same choices if you'd been raised in Korea? Because as you noted in your edit, it came off like "those big evil companies are just taking advantage of stupid people! We need to help them!" Deciding to live a healthy lifestyle is not impossible, nor difficult. It's simply a choice that needs to be made. Being poor or rich is irrelevant.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 02:25 PM) So you'll volunteer to ensure every poor families kitchen is stocked with a functioning stove and oven, pots, pans, cooking utensils and food. And relieve them of their second and third jobs so they can find time to cook. Also, drive them to a supermarket if they don't have a car. f*** that. I'm already paying for the food and the travel to get the food. They can pony up for a cheap ass knife and pots and pans at walmart.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 02:16 PM) Cook the beef until fully browned. Once that happens, get a strainer and put the beef in there with a bowl underneath. The fat drips through the strainer into the bowl. You can even take a spatchela and smash the beef down to squeeze out more fat. It ends up way less greasy. Why not just remove all the flavor?! I take a turkey bastor and suck out all the grease, but i've never squeezed out anything.
  4. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 02:17 PM) Leave it to a group of affluent white people in here to tell people how easy it is to eat healthy and cook at home. "If I could do it I don't see why everyone else can't.“ The point is only that it's possible to be that way.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 02:07 PM) No, I'm not. I completely reject that I'm acting like they're "extremely" limited. That's editorializing that you've thrown in. I used the soft drink chart to illustrate the very simple concept that what choices you make are limited by external factors, some of which are beyond your control. You can't choose to buy something if its not for sale, and that goes for a lot more than soft drinks at restaurants. I could probably eat healthier than I do if I shopped at Whole Foods regularly, but there isn't one near me. Instead, I can choose from what's offered at the stores around me. That's probably true, though I might change it to healthier before agreeing to it. But if we have a culture (social, advertising, marketing, etc.) that encourages you to eat garbage or not be active, that's going to influence you. That can be counteracted by things like the Lets Move or Play 60 or other positive campaigns. It's naive to ignore the role society plays in our own daily choices. Make those healthy, active choices easier to make for more people, shift the culture to stop buying garbage foods and to be more active, etc. It all plays a part. I literally cringed reading this. This is that bulls*** liberal "everyone is a stupid moron that can't think for themselves so we need to protect them" mentality.
  6. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 02:02 PM) The majority of you guys are being absolutely f***tarded right now. Badger, we don't care how many drugs you've taken or currently subject your ($100/hr) mind to. Enough of this Bill Maher I want to brag about how much weed I smoke. And seriously, if you view every hour of your day as a potential billable hour lost, come talk to me when you're 70 and you can't hardly walk and you have 6 months to live and won't see your granddaughter get married and see how much those hours are worth then because you didn't want to lose a billable hour making a reasonable dinner. SS, you are starting to sound like Balta and his cell phone argument with this "food desert" of yours. Maybe if you don't know where to find produce, or are too lazy to go get it, you should have thought about that before you decided to go knock up 3 different women with 2 kids each. At some point people have to take some damn responsibility for their actions. Finding food used to take hours or even days for our ancestors. Good thing they didn't just decide it was too much hassle for them to bother eating in their "food desert." Food was much, much more expensive for our more recent ancestors, such as our grandparents and great grandparents. Good thing they worked hard and saved enough room in their budget to eat. Food is cheaper and more abundant now than at any time in human history. The reason the vast, vast majority of people in this country eat like s*** is because they are ignorant, lazy, undisciplined and irresponsible. For the entire summer for dinner, almost every night, I ate 1 bell pepper, 1 tomato, 1/2 cucumber, and a few ounces of mozzarella cheese. Seasoned with salt and pepper. That cost me maybe $3? For a healthy meal. Took me 2 minutes to prepare. Almost anyone could do this...basic produce is available. A knife is not expensive. It takes almost no time. BMags, I don't know what you have against cheese. A+ for the post F- for your dinners in the summer
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 12:49 PM) I never said that they didn't have a choice. I said that your choice is constrained by what's offered, and that it's important to look at what's offered. Sure, but in that discussion we have to keep in mind that the initial choice is still a choice, not a requirement. People can drink water, but they choose to drink soda, and from there, yes, perhaps the serving sizes are "forced" upon you.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 12:48 PM) where are you getting chicken breasts for $2/pound? I want in. Pretty sure at sams/costco it's even less than that. I know the package is like 13.99 and i'm sure it's 8-10 lbs of chicken.
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 12:40 PM) I can choose to eat elsewhere. I can choose to drink something else. I can choose to only drink part of the soda, but our brains aren't wired well for that. What I can't choose is to get a 7oz soda to enjoy one but also make sure I only drink 7oz. The default is going to be 24-32oz, and moving the default higher and higher will lead to more people drinking more soda. You're already saying people don't have a choice after they've made the choice of eating at these places. I go to McDonalds all the time for lunch and I don't buy a drink. I bring the food back to my office and have water. I'm not forced to drink soda at all, let alone a 32 oz cup of soda.
  10. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 12:39 PM) That just isnt true. Ive done the math with making tacos. If you buy 1) lean ground beef, 2) flour tortilla and 3) cheese. The price is at minimum 2 dollars per serving, which is not break even with fast food as you also have to include opportunity costs, time, etc. Now when you buy food there is going to be some spoilage, where as if you go to Taco Bell, you dont lose anything to spoilage. I bought some apples yesterday at Jewel, 4 apples, $4. Milk is $3. Like I said, show me some actual numbers. Not just "I went to the store one time and bought a cart of food for under $25." I dont even care about this stupid argument. We all make our choices. If I die early it wont be because I ate fast food or ate healthy, worked out didnt work out, it will be due to taking in excess of $100,000 worth of drugs. You made the claim, you prove it. And tacos aren't exactly "healthy food." I can make you a healthy salad for less then 2 bucks (not that taco bell would be less than 2 bucks once you account for the food and travel). But yes, this is a dumb argument. At the end of the day in 99% of cases making your own food and having left overs is going to be cheaper than getting something pre-made or going out to eat. People choose to be lazy and spend more. I'm fine with that choice as well. It's 'merica dammit.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 12:32 PM) they also have this, unfortunately: that's sorta what I mean by your choices being constrained or at least heavily influenced by culture/markets. How is that choice constrained?
  12. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 12:28 PM) jenks has deep insights to the day-to-day life of poverty Working in a grocery store during high school exposed me to the day to day activity of poor people that used WIC and LINK, yes. WIC stuff you have to get specific items that aren't available in mom and pop shops. But i'm sure you also have deep insights into the day-to-day trouble of people living in poverty since you're arguing it's difficult for them to get healthy food.
  13. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 12:16 PM) Its more expensive to eat healthy food than junk food. That is just simple math. And part of the higher mortality rates is that American's have bad habits like drinking, drugs, sex and rock & roll. Rich people, poor people, everyone can die early in the US. So what. Not sure why I care. No way. Eating vegetables and fruits and lean meats (healthy food) is insanely inexpensive. When we lived in the city my wife and I would go to one of those all produce stores and load up a cart full of all kinds of things and it would be under 25 bucks. You're talking a weeks worth of meals for that much. Conversely you go to Sams or Costco and buy prepared meals and you walk out the door with a 300 dollar charge. It comes down to choice. I don't excuse poor people with supposed limited access to food from making those poor choices. Their food is paid for. They gotta go get their WIC or LINK food from a real grocery store anyway. They CHOOSE to be lazy and buy the processed stuff.
  14. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 12:04 PM) you going to feed your family nothing but salads every day? you going to be able to find fresh greens and whatever else to throw into it? afford half a dozen eggs or more for every salad if it's feeding four people? There's obviously things people can do, but you can't just ignore the different challenges people face. If feeding your kids is such an issue, maybe you shouldn't have kids.
  15. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 10:50 AM) Oh yeah in his own right he's not good. But he's the best option at the four right now. His defense down low for this team is huge, and paired with Egwu you have a competent front line. He's also a better rebounder than our other options, even if poor in his own right. Offensively, whatever. Griffey is giving you nothing anyways. Henry is the best threat there but he isn't a four at all. Really just out of position. I've been calling for more minutes for Langford, but other than that, I want to see more of the Egwu/McLaurin combo if it means less of Griffey and Henry down low. I sound like a broken record, but Griffey really does make everyone he plays with a lot worse than they actually are. That's a bit harsh. His problem is the complete lack of defensive skills. It becomes a 5 on 4 game with him out there, and without him stretching the floor and hitting threes on the other end, he's not doing anything. I wonder what his +/- is. He's got to be one of the worst on the team. I still think Illinois is a good team and will be a tough out in the tournament. They just lost to a hot Minnesota team last night. In the end the little mental mistakes add up and with the lack of a PF as you guys have mentioned, the margin for error is pretty small. Abrams continues to reach and get himself in foul trouble but can at times be dominate with the dribble drive. Paul is their best player, but still takes too many plays off which you just can't do in the Big Ten. People are too hard on Richardson - each year he seems to regress in Big Ten play, but at least last night he might have been the most important player stopping Minnesota from totally blowing Illinois out. He continued to make 2 point shots to end scoring droughts or get a much needed bucket. I agree that Egwu is going to be a stud as a senior. The leap from last year to this year is pretty amazing. What's up with Shaw? Is he just a total bust? I thought he was a decently rated recruit when he committed? As I said last night, win at Wisconsin and you're looking at 2-2. That's right were I expected them to be.
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 11:28 AM) http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/18/health/r...udies.html?_r=0 eh, "within a couple miles of an urban neighborhood" is a huge radius. It's called a bus.
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 10:15 AM) There was just a study released a week or two ago that found that mortality rates for slightly obese people were actually lower than underweight or normal weight. But the "gene pool" can't be "cleaned out" like that. You're talking about massive dietary changes resulting mainly from the industrialization of food in only a generation or two at the most. That's nothing something selection pressures can really adjust to, nor would we expect them to, because you're not dying until well after your prime reproductive years. Nor is being overweight a moral failing that we need to "clean out" from our gene pool. Lets get the definition of slightly obese out there. How many people/kids in this country are obese versus "slightly" obese. I'm sure having a little love handle isn't going to kill you, but there are far more morbidly obese people in this country, and sadly those habits just get passed down to young generations. THOSE are the people i'm talking about. And yes, that IS a moral failing especially when you subject your kids to that kind of lifestyle. That's equal to verbal/physical abuse in my book. Edit: more morbidly obese people than other countries is what i meant
  18. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 09:03 AM) i dunno, doesn't seem too popular yet. pretty mind-blowing to me though. this is what happens when capitalism goes rampant. starts with everyone making a lot of money, ends with the country killing its own people for profits. (there, that should stir things up, and to the filibuster we go!) You're right. The government should provide meal pills to everyone with the proper amount of nutrition. People don't need choice, they need healthy diets mandated by the suits! If people are dumb enough to die from being a fat tub of lard, so be it. People in this country need to start letting individuals clean out the gene pool a little. (edit: and nicely done )
  19. QUOTE (Felix @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 10:15 PM) From one Assembly Hall to the other! Beat indiana. please.
  20. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 10:04 PM) Langford should have played a lot more tonight. Yep, get griffey out of the rotation
  21. Well, beat wisky and a 2-2 start isnt terrible. That loss to purdue will come back to haunt us
  22. Ugh, tracey stop passing to these idiots. Apparently 8 straight points via the drive means you should shoot a three
  23. QUOTE (Felix @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 09:19 PM) Surely you aren't talking about that last one by Abrams, are you? The out of control bailout call? Yes.
