  1. I'll take the 20 game win streak
  2. helps to have a 42 year old in your starting line up
  3. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 08:59 PM) Horrible last possession. Oh well, very lucky to be only down 4. Minnesota is on a whole other level than us. Meh, Abrams played about 8 minutes, Paul was out for a 4-5 minute stretch when Illinois could have extended the lead, and the officials decided for the last 10 minutes to start calling fouls (Advantage Minnesota since they're more physical down low). All that and they're down 4. I'll take it.
  4. You got the terrible henry call back. And wtf? Did they not get rid of the falling out of bounds time out?
  5. Wow, terrible missed call on Henry
  6. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 02:07 PM) I would say sociopath is a good term to use. so·ci·o·path noun, Psychiatry. a person with a psychopathic personality whose behavior is antisocial, often criminal, and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience. I think there's your difference there. Most rapes aren't random crazies assaulting women. These guys in Ohio weren't pyschopaths, just ginormous assholes with no morals that were protected by their town. It's Varsity Blues in real life.
  7. Here's a better question - if Illinois beats Minnesota, will the pundits finally stop saying that they don't "buy" Illinois? I notice in all the write-ups that people are still hesitant to believe Illinois is a good team. I'm not sure what else they can do - they've beaten final four contending teams on three occasions now at various points in the season. It's not like they got hot and won a tournament in one weekend (although they did). They've done it in a pre-season tournament, the non-conference and at home in big ten play. How is that not proof of them being consistent? Also, the three point shooting thing has gotten old. They haven't shot the three well since Gonzaga and still have only one "bad" loss. They could have easily won the game against Missouri and they still managed to blow out Ohio State (and really they had a chance at Purdue but whatever, a bad night). This team does not live and die by the three. They just happen to use the three ball a lot in their offense. /rant
  8. That was the fear with Ohio State and it didn't happen. Obviously Minnesota's bigs are better, but I think Illinois made rebounding a point of emphasis. Perhaps Purdue was the wake up call they needed.
  9. Illinois 76, Minnesota 72. That's my prediction. Tight game from the get go, Illinois goes on a small run to start the 2nd half and never lets up.
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 05:14 PM) Any sort of sexual or racial harassment could easily fall under that type of circumstance. And those have the same issues, but you have more evidence available - the make-up of the company, treatment of other females/minorities in the company, personnel files, etc. Rape is the word of the victim without evidence of physical trauma in the majority of cases.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 04:42 PM) How often is there a document, photograph or video of a crime? How often is a crime mostly "he said, she said" and reliant on the credibility of the witnesses? The idea that rape, beyond the evidence that some sexual act took place, is often "he said, she said" is marshaled out in defense of low rape conviction/prosecution rates but I don't see it as any different from a whole lot of other crimes which rely on the exact same sort of evidence. I put the scare quotes there for that reason, because it's brought up as a problem for rape prosecution but not other crimes. As I'm sure you remember, I do have my own larger issues with eye-witness testimony and why it's problematic, but given that most rapes are by someone known to the victim, those concerns are diminished. Most crimes have other witnesses and other evidence about the "result" of the crime. You have that in some rape cases, but not the majority. That, and rape requires a lack of consent, which is only proven by the statements of the victim. We effectively take the victim at their word, and then the defense is left to combat that with the only thing they have - "well I didn't understand the situation that way, I thought she wanted to." What other crimes are you thinking about? I'd bet assault crimes have a similar low success rate because it depends entirely on the mental state of the victim. Anything to do with contracts and ambiguous terms are all he said she said. I dunno, I'm drawing a blank on anything else that's similar. Edit: I'll add too that in all the cases I work on (wrongful deaths to fighting over contract terms), if the evidence comes down to he said, she said, I always advise my client that that's the s***tiest case you can have because the facts no longer mean anything and it's all about who the judge/jury finds to be more credible.
  12. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 03:59 PM) A lot of crimes come down to "he said, she said." It only really seems to be a 'problem' when it comes to rape. Not sure what this means. I'd say most civil and criminal cases come down to he said/she said, witness statements, credibility of witnesses, etc. and is a "problem" in terms of proof. Rape is kind of unique in that it's almost always 2 people alone. There's not a document, photograph or video to corroborate what each person is saying. Add in booze, add in drugs, add in flirtation that is difficult to read, add in history between the two involved, etc. and those he said she said issues become even more complicated.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 01:19 PM) Father hires people to kill his son's video game character: http://kotaku.com/5972406/father-hires-in+...on-from-playing Unplugging the power cord would have been cheaper.
  14. QUOTE (SexiAlexei @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 12:02 PM) This is my biggest fear for college football, and the reason I am anti playoffs. I see this quickly expanding past 8 teams. The larger the playoff pool, the less the regular season games mean. I love that every game is critical to the success of your season, and if there's an 8, or 16 team playoff, that doesn't matter nearly as much. On the other hand, if having a loss or even two doesn't mean your hopes of a championship are out the window, perhaps more big name programs will play big name programs in the nonconference season. Right now that's the biggest problem with college football (aside from the traditionalist problem, which gets rectified I think with a playoff where upsets are more likely) - aside from a few big games, the first 6 weeks of the season sucks. I'm all about a big tournament. Give me upsets. Give me cinderella stories. If you can make it through the gauntlet, even if you aren't the best team, you're playing the best at the right time and are deserving of the trophy. That's why college basketball is awesome.
  15. Luckily in 2 years it won't matter and we can be done with that nonsense.
  16. Perhaps it's because I've never really gone without (humblebrag!), but it's just sex. I could never get to the point where I needed it so badly I'd be willing to force myself onto someone. In high school/college was I pushy trying to persuade a girl? Sure. But never physically. I don't understand how you can get to that point.
  17. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 7, 2013 -> 02:34 PM) I thought the best defense of someone shooting their AIDs infected sperm at me was to shoot AIDs infected sperm back at them. LOL.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2013 -> 02:11 PM) And yet, if the statistics say that you and your family are vastly less safe when owning a gun, you don't care. I could thus take that exact same first phrase and replace "wear a seatbelt" with "own a gun" and it would fit perfectly. That's some more of you bulls***ting the statistics.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2013 -> 02:04 PM) And at the same time, there's been a substantial decrease in traffic fatalities and an increase in seatbelt usage. Great. The ends don't always justify the means. At some point we have to decide as a society that when less than 1% of the country f***s up and does something awful, the 99.9% don't have to suffer the consequences. When gun violence reaches a point where just about everyone knows someone that has been a victim of gun violence then sure, i'll hop on board with some over-restrictive regulations (see, DUI laws). But until that point, no.

Yeah, probably wasn't necessary but someone said they only watched one episode. I'm sure Mary was a b**** from the start though. For those that watch Justified - is it ok to jump in last season? My wife and I watched 3/4th's of season 1 and then moved and lost the remaining episodes on our DVR. Then we ended up skipping season 2, hoping they'd be on Netflix streaming (still not). I taped every episode from last season though. Would we be missing a ton starting with last season?

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 7, 2013 -> 10:56 AM) I like how Downtown doesn't try to paint their characters as complete heroes. It does bring in characters to highlight how silly it is that they hold themselves in such high esteem, yet have done nothing to earn their money and seem to be quite terrible at maintaining it. That said, I hope they can keep Tom around for more. He's a good actor. I was a little upset that Tom wasn't around for the 2nd hour last night. I was hoping he and cybil (?) would be back in Downton permanently this season. He adds some much needed spark. Also,

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 7, 2013 -> 10:45 AM) Band of Brothers is one of the best shows ever put on TV, period. The book is a great follow up to read. And you are all welcome for HBOGO, my company makes it all possible. Thanks to you and your company! Now call someone over at Showtime and sell them on creating the same kind of app. On a similar note, I noticed my DirecTV app has been updated to include its on demand library, as well as a feature to watch live TV so long as you're connected to the same wi-fi network as the receiver. That's going to be awesome to be able to have a game going on my tablet while watching another show with the wifey. Or better yet, watching 2 games at once.
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 7, 2013 -> 09:56 AM) wtf how did he survive that? I wondered the same thing. Luck I guess.
  24. I hope these guys get life in prison and anyone else involved gets significant jail time. What kind of parents/town do these kids live in to think something like this is acceptable? I mean, taking advantage of an unconscious girl is terrible by itself, but parading her around and letting everyone have a turn? Jesus.
