QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 10:49 AM) It's pretty much the understanding with startup companies too. I guess if that was made clear up front, that due to cash flow issues he might not get paid, then i'd be more willing to agree with you. But he should still report it. Even if he did it anonymously so that someone from the NLRB or the Illinois Sec of State would give them a call and maybe force them to start paying people.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 10:26 AM) There are plenty of law clerks that don't get paid at all. The legal field exploits the law students' need for experience by hiring them as unpaid interns or grossly underpaying them. But that's the understanding up front.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 10:18 AM) Ok, I recognize this is wrong of them, but I am just going to say I think you guys are taking this a bit more seriously than I think it warrants. This stuff is going on all over the place. Look at the way law firms treat their clerks...hah, this is nothing compared to that. Not being paid market rate =/= not being paid at all.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 10:17 AM) People in charge of their favorite sports team actively making decisions to protect the reputation of that sports team at the expense of children. Children who lost more than 6-8 years of their "sports life." I get the argument, and i'm not trying to equate the two losses. I'm just saying I can see why people think the punishment is punishing more than just the few people that were trying to protect the university.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 10:13 AM) Yes, I understand. But this isn't Chrysler or something. It is a fledgling startup company. Best case scenario for him is he goes through this process of reporting them, gets blackballed by everyone anyone in the company knows, and gets his check for $300 bucks. Yay! Not worth it. Best case is the assholes running a bad company stop running the company AND this guy gets his money owed plus any money he loses if he gets fired.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 10:13 AM) The whole reason the thing was covered up was to preserve the shiny, moral image of their favorite sports team and their God-Coach. And that was a terrible decision made by a very small number of people in secret.
  7. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 09:37 AM) "I generally respect stephen a. Smith but today, he was out of bounds. Yes, this should be about the children but not via the destruction of a university program" One of my friends on FB. So very tempted to slap the f*** out of him. I don't think that's all that unreasonable actually. I'm fine with the punishment, but I also can see the other side. This atrocity was permitted by a small handful of people. The ex-players/coaches and the hundreds of thousands of alumni and fans had nothing to do with this. And now they've lost a gigantic part of their sports life for the next 6-8+ years.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 11:44 PM) I'm surprised my 5 month old doesn't run around going crazy with storms. Not one issue. I guess it's just hit or miss? My 6 year old boston didn't think twice about storms until last year. Now any hint of thunder and she shakes. She used to love going on walks in a downpour, playing in puddles. Not so much now. I think when they're puppies they haven't learned a sense of awareness. Later on they do.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 10:00 AM) Wouldn't it be illegal to fire an employee who reported you to the NLRB/whoever handles that stuff for illegally withholding wages? Whistleblower protection yes, especially if you report it to a federal agency.
  10. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 08:34 AM) Somewhere down in Florida, Bobby Bowden is doing the happy dance. So going from a guy that covered up a sex abuse scandal to a guy that had multiple grading scandals and God knows what other activity against the rules. College football everybody!
  11. I think movie studies understand that this sort of event makes the home theater option much more enticing.
  12. Better than being fish in a barrel.
  13. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 06:39 PM) and making an already terrible situation much much worse. How could this have gotten any worse?
  14. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 05:00 PM) Again, what's the big deal with some security entering certain places? You that bothered to get a pat down at a Bears game, or a wand at a concert? Yeah, its annoying and pointless.
  15. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 02:48 PM) I think the story is that he was sitting towards the front of the theater, went out an exit door to "answer a call", propped it open got all the s*** and came back in I'm surprised an alarm didn't go off.
  16. How'd he get in with that much fire power? He had to have been carrying a gym bag or something.
  17. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 02:32 PM) Personally I'm fine with going through security to enter a building/airplane/event. I really don't see what the big deal is. Now, whether any of it is that beneficial, that's another argument. Here's the thing about metal detectors - they don't do all that much. Even if a guy enters a theater or school with a gun, the alarm or whatever goes off...everyone's still getting shot seconds later anyway. So yes, I think that would be somewhat of a waste. Why would you be ok living in a police state?
  18. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 01:58 PM) Agreed with the first paragraph. But one crazy guy shooting people in a theater is a lot different that terrorism. Let's not put them on the same level as far as giving up freedoms, which whether you tried to or not, you basically did with the second paragraph. I'm sure your reaction post 9/11 wasn't the same as it is now. But what personal freedoms are you upset you had to give up? Does it deal with airports, or going to events, or...? The entire security landscape has changed in just about every aspect of life. Transportation is just one. Buildings have security, stadiums have security, events are canceled because of security concerns, etc etc. Billions and billions are spent in the name of safety and i'm convinced the vast majority of it is a gigantic waste. It's security theater. I seriously hope we don't go down this path, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if we start seeing metal detectors/security checks at major public places like movie theaters, malls, etc. Just wait, in the next couple of days that'll be the next talking point.
  19. I really, really hope we as a country don't freak out over this. It's a fluke thing done by a crazy person. No more, no less. This isn't because of Call of Duty, Batman, availability of guns, etc. This was a crazy person that did this. Period. More than a decade after 9/11 i'm still pissed how much we as a society gave up in terms of personal freedoms in everyday life just to feel more safe, when in reality we're not much safer than before.
  20. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 01:21 PM) I heard 71 people injured, which might include injuries from the tear gas in addition to gunshot wounds. A lot were shrapnel injuries. I don't think 71 people were shot with bullets. People in the theater next to the one he was shooting in were injured from all the ricochet.
  21. QUOTE (farmteam @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 12:08 PM) You're right, but I think he goes a bit beyond thinking it's wrong and not the preferred family structure with this: Yeah I read that as "I believe God has established that marriage is between a man and a woman. As a society we keep questioning that and it's not our place to think we know better." There's nothing negative about that. There's no "rot in hell" component to that. I don't see why people need to apologize for wanting to support what they believe is the ideal family unit.
  22. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 10:57 AM) Let me rephrase this. I won't boycott a business based on someone's personal stance. When that person's personal stance is reflected in the way that company does business, that's when a boycott is fair game IMO. People get all high and mighty about boycotting businesses, and I bet most of them own Apple products or Nike products that are produced with child labor in some other country. Out of sight, out of mind. (not saying what you think is wrong, just the reality of the world we live in. If everyone was consistent with not doing business with people they don't agree with you'd have to be self-sufficient basically)
  23. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 09:25 AM) You're right I paraphrased. There's a pretty important distinction there. There are people who think homosexuality is wrong and that it's not the preferred family structure in our society. But they don't believe in judging gay people or chastising them or hoping they die a horrible death.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 09:36 AM) Let's not go about blaming victims. Maybe not top parenting but certainly nothing that their child should be shot to death over. Losing their kid is bad enough without moral police pointing fingers. The thing with the mother is weird. How did she know it was her son? Sounds like he must have been talking about doing something.
  25. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 09:06 AM) Because the President of Chick-Fil-A said in an interview last week that if we let gay people get married, we're all going to hell. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/17/d..._n_1680984.html I don't see that quote.
