  1. Ahhhhhhhhhhh snap! Someone throw this in Jacksons face and shove it in his mouth.
  2. I'd just like to add that I was a dishwasher for an entire year at my universities cafeteria. That was in 2000-2001. There were quite a few of us from "upper" level family backgrounds going to a small, extremely expensive private school (Illinois Wesleyan). It was work study, so I didn't even see any money come my way, it all went towards my education. I think I figured it out that it was somewhere close to 7 bucks an hour. So yes, there are people out there who would do it if need be. I think the whole argument that we lose those workers for good if they leave is crap.
  3. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 01:40 PM) Whoa, I wouldnt go that far about USC. They have about 6 Rb's I would take in a heartbeat. I do like how you kept OSU out of that bet though. I'm saying from a heisman-hype perspective they haven't lived up to the expectations, especially Booty. Of course I'd take some of their talent. And osu has one of the best defenses in the country. I dont think they will shut illinois down, but it'll certainly be the best defense they will see all year.
  4. QUOTE(He_Gawn @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 12:59 PM) He may have, but I agree wholeheartedly. Mendenhall is a good back, but Hart has carried the Michigan offense all year. The guy backs down to no one. I'd be willing to bet Rashard does not even get 100 yards vs Michigan or Ohio State. Hell, I'd even go as far as I bet Iowa holds him under 100. Who cares if he has to "carry the offense?" Whch WR core would you rather take, Illinois' or Michigans? Which O-line would you take? The one with the gigantor left tackle Long? Just because the rest of his team is underachieving doesn't mean Michigan is without any talent. I'll take that bet. Mendenhall will get 150+ total yards against Iowa and Michigan. Book it. I don't think the Missouri game was really a good measure either. They were down most of the game and were forced to pass. That and they didn't really find out what kind of running game they had until the syracuse/indiana games. At the end of the year Mendenhall will have a higher ypc and more total td's. You can book that too. Again, I'm not saying Hart is BAD and I really don't know that Mendenhall can win the heismann. I just don't see where all the hype came from with Hart. He went from a decent back at Michigan to this unstoppable heisman force in one off season. Sorta like Heinne. Sorta like anyone from USC right now - it's all about the hype machine when it should really be about whats on the field.
  5. My thoughts on the game: 1) incredibly lucky to get the W. I can't believe Lovie is 4-0 at GB 2) I feel bad for Benson. I don't think it's fair that he's getting some of the blame for not living up to the hype and failing to at least equal Jones from last year. It's pretty obvious that the o-line is terrible. The guy managed like 70 yards on 28ish carries - all while being hit at or before the line of scrimmage. If you would just look at the stats you'd think it was horrible, but really he did a great job at least getting some positive yards. 3) Ron Turner can suck my taint. Seriously this is the Jon Schoop offense. How many times are you going to run it up the middle for 2 yards? I'm all for establishing the run, but if you don't establish the run in 3 quarters I think it's safe to say you are never going to establish it. So the running game showed up for one series at the end of the game - this was not set up by anything. Hell, I think the biggest gain was 6 yards. If we continue to play like this (and call plays like this) we'll be the same as 2003 with Orton. 1st down run for a yard, 2nd down run for 2 yards, 3rd down incomplete or 4 yard pass, 4th down punt. 3a) Why are we not giving the ball to Hester? We have one of the most exciting weapons in all of football and we can't get a reverse or handoff or something to him a couple times a game? It's getting ridiculous. So he has a fumbling problem, tho cares if he scores a touchdown or two each week. I guess he finally realized having a big, fast, athletic TE would help the offense, maybe next week he'll finally get smart and give Hester the ball. 4) Green Bay played not to lose instead of to win. That's the only reason they lost. Just like Turner, their off coordinator decided to stick with a run even though the Bears had adjusted and started stopping it. Favre picked apart the defense for the majority of the game and for some reason they start running the ball when they needed to get some first downs. Similarly, that last 1:30 might have been the worst clock management I've seen in a while. Amazing considering Favre is 104 years old and has been in that position a ton before. 5) Tillman is a stud. 6) Griese still sucks. I don't care that he won (luck). I'm confident Grossman could have made the 2 decent throws he made that entire game. WTF was with that interception? Why are people not riding his ass for such a stupid throw. I thought he was supposed to be making good decisions? I think the TD/Int ratio so far is 3/5. And did anyone else catch the stat that NBC threw up about the worst interception per pass ratio? Griese is like 3rd worst with a pick every 24 throws. 7) I hate Madden and Michaels more each time I see them. Same with the entire NBC crew. They might have picked two of the worst ex-players in Bettis and Barber and although I like Olbermein he adds nothing to the telecast; the entire show just seems horrible - none of the guys have any sort of connection. There is no chemistry at all.
  6. QUOTE(Brian @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 09:21 AM) When did Mendenhall become the leader for the Heisman with some people here? He is very good, but he is not even close to having the stats Mike Hart has put up in his career at Michigan. I'm not saying Hart isn't a good back, but I don't remember ever being awed by him and his runs. He suddenly became a "great" back because everyone thought Michigan would be good this year and as a senior hb at a traditional powerhouse he's supposed to be great. If Hart is in the Heismann race, Mendenhall should be there too, as his numbers are better. Let's look at the numbers: RUSHING GP Att Gain Loss Net Avg TD Long Avg/G --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mendenhall, Rashard 6 114 796 24 772 6.8 10 50 128.7 Hart, Mike 6 179 1015 39 976 5.5 10 61 162.7 Nearly 1.5 yards more per rush attempt, the same amount of td's, and if you take his nearly SEVEN YARD AVERAGE PER RUSH, he'd have 1214 yards. And this doesn't even include his receiving stats, which are also better than Hart's: RECEIVING GP No. Yds Avg TD Long Avg/G -------------------------------------------------------------- Hart, Mike 6 6 36 6.0 0 11 6.0 Mendenhall, Rashard 6 18 173 9.6 2 42 28.8 Rush defenses faced (taking out the I-AA teams): Illinois: Penn State - 14th Missouri - 40th Indiana - 42nd Wisconsin - 74 Syracuse - 119 Average: 57.8 Michigan: Penn St - 14th Oregon - 49th Northwestern - 80th Notre Dame - 101st Eastern Michigan - 104th Average: 69.6
  7. Have I missed the last four years of college football? When did Mike Hart become the Reggie Bush of college football? He's a decent back with a ridiculous offensive line. Gee that must be tough. Explain how Hart is better than Mendenhall. Mendenhall is probably stronger, more agile, and has break away speed. At the end of the year he's going to have better numbers than Hart, with 1/4 less carries.
  8. First post since I watched the great, program changing win against Wisky on saturday. The game was in the same mold as the Penn st game (score pts and hope the defense doesn't break) but I'm so impressed with the job Zook has done in such a short period of time. This program literally was stocked full of 1 and 2 star players and he's made winners out of them in 2 years. Amazing. (and i'll gloat a little - i said if they run the option all the time they'd have success...glad Locksley read my post). I think the sky is the limit for this team. I'm actually kind of annoyed about the national attention they've gotten so far. Lots of "suprising upset" talk. And lots of "ohio state is the only good team in the big ten." I'll give the the fact that osu is good, especially their defense, but have they really been tested so far? I think the game against washington was good, but illinois has now beaten penn st and wisconsin. I just don't see a defense that can stop mendenhall, juice and benn. Are they beatable? Absolutely. But come on, who had Purdue beat besides ND? And we are supposed to be amazed at osu nearly shutting them out? It's going to be an interesting couple of weeks. I think if Illinois wins next week at iowa it'll set up a huge game at home against Michigan. It'll take a win over a mediocre Michigan team to get the national scene thinking that Illinois has a shot at the conference title and a bcs bowl.
  9. The author points out the common concerns, but to say it would lead to a huge recession or another great depression is pretty ludacrous. I also like his anti-American style writing, as if it's Americas fault that we utilize global markets. Foreign banks that are about to get burned by the whole subprime lending fiasco have no one to blame but themselves. Many banks before have gone under for buying up trade debt without knowing much about it. That's essentially what happened the last 10 years, except that instead of one or two banks doing it, the entire world was doing it.
  10. Agree with the fugliness point, but really, wtf is a 16 year old doing making a political statement? Man at 16 I was interested in one thing and one thing only: boobies. (not being sexist, just being honest )
  11. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 04:53 PM) The Todd is crying somewhere right now... link I would love to sit on that jury... $1,000,000,000 sounds about right. I would love to be her attorney. I'd go cheap and only ask for 20 percent instead of 30 or 40. Rainmaker what?
  12. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 11:57 AM) My understanding about devices, in the legal sense, is that a deadly weapon has to in itself present greater harm than a non-weapon, such as a fist or a foot. A shoe doesn't really qualify. It is also my understanding that you do not need a deadly weapon per se in order for attempted murder to be applicable. If some huge weightlifter dude beats a scrawny guy senseless while screaming "I'll kill you!", that is probably attempted murder, but without a deadly weapon. Possibly, but again we'd have to look at how the state defines it. But I would say one can do more harm with a shoe on his foot than without it. What if these kids weren't wearing sneakers but were wearing timberland, construction-style boots (I know, total racial stereotype, but whatever)?
  13. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 11:49 AM) Wow. OK, this has gone way beyond what I intended. Look at Jim's post, and mine after. What was ridiculous to me, and still is, is the idea that a shoe is a deadly weapon. I have not said, and would not say, the charges of attempted murder are unjustified, because I haven't read enough on the case to even begin to have an opinion on that. Discard the justice system? Seriously, take it down a notch. I wasn't attacking you, so I didn't intend to bring anything up a notch. There is a general consensus among the country (Jesse Jackson, et al) that thinks these kids got screwed - as if the justice system would allow a racist states attorney to fill a racist jury whose verdict would be upheld by a racist judge. It just simply doesn't work that way. That's why this situation became a national story. It's ridiculous to think this would happen in 2007 with the amount of media coverage that is available. And I have to disagree with your thoughts about the shoe. Using a shoe to beat someone with your hand might be laughable, but putting your heel into someones skull is quite a different story. I'll have to look up the definition of deadly weapon in the state statute, but I'd imagine a good argument could be made that it could be viewed that way.
  14. Yip, I agree. I would do it until they show me they can pass over the top. Should be a good game either way. My expectations for Illinois is to stay in the game throughout. We do that and I think it's a success.
  15. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 10:16 AM) What's with the paranoia? Did FlaSoxxJim, myself or anyone here ever call you dumb? Or even hint at it? I just pointed out that you made what seems to me to be a bizarre association of his post with a particular political wing, and also said I agreed with him that to call a shoe a deadly weapon is pretty ridiculous. And further in fact, Jim was not making light of the attack - he was making light of the apparently trumped up charge being levied. So, the question still remains... what does that post have to do with left wing or right wing? I am trying to understand how you came to that conclusion. I was not LOL'ing at a kid getting beaten up, nor do I think Jim was. What would it take for this to be attempted murder? I have yet to hear anyone actually talk about the charge in a legal context. Six people sought out a kid to beat up and hurt badly. Did they intend to kill him? I don't think the media has talked about that. But apparently there was enough evidence to suggest that yes, they did. It amazes me how people often discard the justice system. Let's assume the first jury was a bunch of white racist scumbags who wanted to see black kids thrown in jail. The fact still remains that the judge in the case didn't see any evidence of that, otherwise he would have thrown it out. Moreover, a second judge, who was thrown into the realm of media scrutiny because of the popularity of the case, also agreed that the charges were ok (at least concerning one of the kids). Laugh and ridicule the states attorney all you want, but the fact is there was enough evidence to convict him of that charge, otherwise it would have been thrown out.
  16. And for the Wisky - Illini talk, here's my opinion (from an Illini fan). Wisky is overrated. Period. A #5 team in the nation should be stomping all over people on the field. At this point Wisky has barely survived games, at home, against mediocre teams. Michigan State is an average team. Iowa is an average team. Now, having said that, they are no cupcake. They're a good football team. Probably one of the better teams in the Big Ten. But lets call a spade a spade; they are not one of the top 5 teams in the country. As for Illinois, I'm excited, but I'm guarded. As much as I enjoyed the Penn St victory, Penn St really lost that game more than Illinois won it. I know the defense "stepped up" and made some big plays, but some terrible QB play cost Penn St the game. The offense was completely shut down in the 2nd half and Penn St could not be stopped. Take away one or two of the fantastic interceptions (by vontae and leman) and Illinois loses. Even going back to the Indiana game if a play or two turns out differently we don't win that game either. The team is obviously much improved and you can tell that the mentality of the program has changed from "oh god these guys in div 1 are big" to "we can hang with anyone." So on to Saturday. Illinois wins if the play calling is in a 1-3 option ratio. Every third play must have the option. It's an unstoppable play. No defense in the country can stop either Juice, Mendenhall or Benn over the course of the game. Secondly, Juice can't have a crappy game. I'll be honest in that i'm beginning to lose faith in the kid. He's Sexy Rexy of the Illini except for the fact that he can run. He has shown a great ability to escape pressure and make a play, but he doesn't have much touch on his throws nor any accuracy to make ordinary throws (except for the outs and slants). Therefore he must manage the game and not screw it up for the rest of the team. Thirdly, the defense has to contine to play the "bend not break" style it has all season. It's going to give up yards but it needs to continue to make the big plays to stop drives. This is my biggest concern. If there's one positive about Wisky - their offense doesn't make too many stupid mistakes. It's their defense that is holding them back. As much as I love where the Illini are headed, I see them losing this game in a shoot out. Something like 30-34 Wisky. Illinois won't be able to stop the offense all day and Illinois' offense will go cold in the 2nd half (mainly due to some piss poor play calling, like in the Penn St game where we decided "hey this option play where we average about 15 yards per play is boring us, lets switch to pass plays that we can't do).
  17. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 3, 2007 -> 09:26 AM) Neither OSU or Wisco should be ranked that highly, at all. None of the teams in the big ten are very "good." Buts thats the way that the rankings have shaken out so far, but they wont end up that way. s***, Purdue may end up winning the Big Ten for all we know. Except that OSU is good. They beat a Washington team, at Washington, with relative ease, the same Washington team that nearly beat USC. I guess then you could say that USC isn't very good, but with that logic no one in college football will be good. This is the problem with polls. There should be no polls until week 5 or 6 - sometime in the middle of the season when the cupcake games are over and everyone starts conference play.
  18. QUOTE(Chet Lemon @ Oct 2, 2007 -> 01:48 PM) Except a few recent cases: Gonzales v. Carhart: Allowed Fed. Gov't abortion laws to trounce state abortion laws Gonzales v. Oregon: Would have allowed Fed. Gov't to prosecute Doctors that are requested for physician-assisted suicide of terminally ill patients per Oregon State Law (Death w/ Death Dignity Act) Whether or not one agrees with the decisions in the cases, Thomas has contradicted his views that the Constitution only gives Fed. Gov't limited powers (i.e. regulate interstate commerce) by giving the Feds more power than stated in the Constitution. Did you read his concurring opinion in Carhart? Or his dissenting opinion in Oregon?
  19. QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 11:20 AM) Great article. One thing I particularly agreed with is his points regarding the public demanding certain behavior because he's black. I disagreed with vilifying Craig for voting against the rest of the homosexual community and whenever it comes up with anyone else who is a certain race, religions, etc. It would seem to me there would be the same diversity of opinion among any group of people. I disagree that race hasn't helped him. It does help being a Republican in black skin. But if those ideals are his true ideals, and I believe they are, then we really can't fault him for the benefits he received. In fact it would be worse if he abandoned his beliefs in an attempt to match what some AA would demand. Interesting that b**** mentioned using the Constitution for tp. I guess we'd disagree what that means. With Bush's use of the Homeland Security bills, I think that's exactly what the GOP is doing. My only distinction would be that the Court in those types of cases only approve (and also disapprove) of some of what he and Congress have done. They look at the Constitution and ask "does this fit with their enumerated powers." The power of the Executive and of Congress to act in times of war is pretty broad. That's different than the past decisions dealing with rights (affirmative action cases, religious freedom cases, homosexual rights cases, state power v federal powers cases, etc) that are sweeping opinions mainly arguing about public policy and not the law and the Constitution.
  20. Anyone else see this interview? Here's a good article about it: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/09/27/...in3305443.shtml I thought it was great. The guy has gotten a bad rap most of his career. Probably doesn't hurt that I am also conservative, but I agree with most of his opinions, especially his refusal to use the Constitution as a piece of TP. I really like this qoute: "There are tough decisions we have to make in life. And of course, we all feel about that. People think that because you might agree or disagree with them on certain things, that you don't have that concern about people who are left with tough choices. You do have that concern. But none of that had anything to do with what's in the Constitution. The point is simply this. The Constitution is what matters. Not my personal views, whatever they may be. And I don't go around expressing them on that issue," Thomas says. " What are your thoughts on him/this interview?
  21. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 12:42 PM) So pumped for tomorrow. Huge huge game for us. I'll be there. ILL INI! Sigh, I'm going to miss the game though. Not only does RCN STILL not carry the BTN, but I have friends from out of town who are visiting and they could care less about Illinois football, so I can't drag them to a bar. In essence I'm missing Illinois' biggest game in what, 3 or 4 years? Win this game and we not only start getting consideration in the top 25 but we also start establishing the possiblity that we're Big Ten Championship material (*shudders in excitement*).

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 10:37 AM) I would think that it would be a little difficult to stream onto a phone, but that's just me. That's one of it's big marketing points. I might pick up Sony's version - Location Free Player I think it's called. I have a ps3 and psp, soon the ps3 will be become a dvr and the location free player will send it out to the web which can be picked up either by a computer or my psp. Anyone else feel like that technology has been really slow? I mean I remember my freshman year in college when t1 lines were new, I could download 500 MB movies in 5 minutes. It hasn't gotten much better since then, and that was in 2000.
  23. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 05:42 PM) Perhaps, I do know that I said that when I was certain the Bears would do the smart thing and downgrade him to #3. EDIT: i had the disclaimer "unless Griese gets injured" on there, which actually takes most of the finality of the statement out of there. anyway, does everyone here realize that Brian Griese has the 17th best career QB rating of all time? just a little number that doesnt mean much but it means something. If Griese is such a great QB, why was he cut by the last two teams he's played for? Why did he take a two time superbowl championship team and drill them into the ground? I think NFL professionals know a whole lot more about his abilities than the fan base, who hasn't seen him play when it matters in a long time. This entire QB situation is a joke. None of the quarterbacks on the current roster are worth a damn. I'd argue Rex is the only one out of the three that I'd keep as a backup because even though he makes stupid decisions he can actually throw the ball downfield. What frustrates me so much is that I saw a "new" Rex in the Chargers game. He was throwing balls away, he was making good reads, he was checking down to his 2nd and 3rd receivers, etc. And then he comes home and plays like ass - partly because his o-line is slow and aging, his running game blows, and his receivers literally can't catch his passes. And how have people totally forgotten the 05 season with Orton? 2 yard pass, 1 yard run, incomplete, punt. 3 yard run, incomplete, incomplete, punt, etc etc etc. Expect the same this weekend against Detroit. Nothing I have seen from Griese in the preseason makes me believe he'll be anything more than a glorified (more seasoned) Orton. I was fine with the Bears organization sticking with Grossman this year. They had to do it from a business perspective (same with the Thomas Jones/Benson situation). But Angelo better wake-up. He's had a dynasty of a defense for about 3 years now and he's only got one, maybe two seasons left before major players leave or get too old and stop being effective. He needs to throw tons of cash to a big time QB that's an established winner - Cough*McNabb*Cough. It doesn't matter that you overpay for him - the superbowl revenue would outweigh the costs. Relying on drafting a QB will put us in the same position as three years ago. It's a gamble that highly-touted QB's work out - see Leinart, Matt and Leftwich, Bryan - so why waste another 2 or 3 years making the exact same mistake you made with Grossman? That makes no sense.
