QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 02:00 PM) Because clearly...this is going to convince these people that the modern, pluralistic way is better than their way. And clearly we should be just as extreme and allow intolerant countries to execute people for something like calling a teddy bear Muhammed. I'm not saying lets drop some nukes and blow the country to bits. What's wrong with being firm with the Sudanese government? Cut a deal behind close doors - let her go or we stop funding your poor ass country. I love these types of debates because in this instance I firmly believe Bush's mantra of you're either with us or against us. If you believe in a fundamental ideal, like freedom (of speech, religion, etc), it makes no sense to me to "allow" other countries to not follow that fundamental ideal. It's one thing if a backwards ass country wants to do it within their borders with their own people (though even then I think we all agree there are times to step in), but when it involves one of your own citizens I see no problem with putting your foot down to stop it. -

QUOTE(Cknolls @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 01:29 PM) Like the umteen millions here illegally whose first act is breaking our laws? Pssh, for the 14 millionth time, they are bettering their lives and they do good things for our economy so its ok. Seriously though, if this sort of crap doesn't show how ass-backwards these people really are... And this is difficult. There's obviously a difference between extremist muslims that strap bombs to their chests - thats a small minority. But this sort of intolerant absolutist stance isn't a small number. Think a year or two back when someone (in the Netherlands?) had the newspaper cartoon of Muhammed. A lot of Muslims went ape s*** over it. Britian should swarm in and take her back to the homeland. If Sudan wants to say anything about it, Britian should pimp slap them and say "welcome to the 21st century you intolerant bunch of boobs." -

QUOTE(Elgin Slim @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 11:29 PM) Any Golf gamers out there? My library has games you can check out(awesome) and I picked up TW 08 for 360 for a weekend, and it was pretty awesome for the most part. My only beef with the game is that Tiger can't drive 350 yards like he can in real life and the 3-click swing is impossible.( you can keep it on analog if you want) It is a visually impressive game, and the gameplay is very good too. What are the best golf games you've played for any system? I really wish I had time to play games more because my classes are very grueling this semester. 3 lab classes All of you other dudes in college, how do you have any time to play games? BTW, I played the MLB 2K series for 2 years(unfortunately the only MLB game on 360) and went back a couple months ago to play MVP 2005 for my PS2. I was terribly disappointed, in fact I thought that MLB 06 the show was better than it. What's all the fuss aboot regarding the MVP 2005. Its really not any different than any other baseball game. Hot Shots Golf- any version, any system. To me its the hands down best golf game. It's a "real" simulation mixed with some cartooney features. I never liked Tiger Woods. Everything looked so unrealistic - the size of the ball, the player, the course. I dunno how to describe it, the dimensions always bothered me.

QUOTE(MHizzle85 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 12:02 PM) What makes Whitlock "real"? He doesn't view race as an excuse for why bad things happen to people. I get the impression that he doesn't like when people use race as a crutch either. To me that's being "real." He's got the Bill Cosby mentality which I totally agree with. -

And this is over. Illinois loses to a terrible maryland team. i dare say this is the worst illinois team in 10 years. I thought, maybe, they'd have some balls and play with some sort of chip on their shoulder. Instead they are just plain bad and can't shoot to save their lives. I just hope we can keep the ncaa tourney streak alive. Randle, you f***ing suck. Pruitt, pass the f***ing ball. Meachum, go break a leg and stop playing. Everyone else, take the f***ing ball and go to the gym and learn to f***ing shoot. f*** you, f*** you, you're cool, f*** you I'm out. -

agreed. we've been talking "potential" for 4 years. i have yet to see any sign that he's ready to be a player. he's just a guy running around that can jump. what angers me most so far is that this team is so poor at running any sort of offensive play. it's a playground game right now. maryland is terrible and we're losing. -

we just lack any sort of confidence. the past few years the team had a mentality that not only are we going to beat you, we're going to beat you by 30. They seem so apathetic out there, like who cares if we win or not. -

Ugh, Illinois can not shoot at all. Getting better later in the half, but they are terrible. Their offense consists of running around a little, passing the ball a couple times and hoping something goes down. -

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7499442...P>1=10637 Amen brother, amen. I love Whitlock. I have since before he was dropped from ESPN because he was a black man that was "real" and didn't play into the ridiculous stereotypes ala Steven A Smith and Stuart Scott. I read him regularly, if you don't you owe it to yourself to start. -
Did anyone buy College Hoops 2K8? IGN gave it an 8 out of 10. I was kinda meh about the demo, but still might pick it up.

When was the last time Duke actually played a meaningful game in the big ten challenge on the road? They played Illinois on a neutral court 5-6 years ago, and they played a crappy Indiana team a few years ago. Seriously though, have the EVER been on the road against a good team? -
So I decided to buy Assassins Creed after all. Pretty solid thus far - though I'm only about an hour or two in.

Jameson whiskey on the rocks. My first few bottles I had to add some water, but over the course of the year (got into it when my parents came back from Ireland and fell in love with it) I'm finally able to handle it straight up for the most part. About 2 glasses (4-5 shots) and I'm good for the night.

Lol, did anyone see this? http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3119690 What a joke of a system. Of course as an Illini fan I love this, but what a terrible idea. "What's that? We don't have the teams we want in the BCS? No problem, lets just expand the system so that we can choose who we want." 18 teams for 10 spots - ridiculous. -

Yeah at this point I'm convinced Brock needs to be in the starting line-up. Lets go big and athletic. We might suffer with speed, but I really don't see much drop-off. Maybe Weber likes Brock off the bench as a spark. He's improved a lot. Still can't hit that pull up jumper with consistency, but the fact that he can create and get a clean look like he did (at least 5-6 times last night) is good news. -

I agree with everything but the Randle comment with his 3rd foul - it was bogus. I rewatched the first half after the game and although the total fouls were pretty close, Duke was called for blatant fouls and Illinois was called for touch fouls. I HATE to b**** about officiating because 9 times out of 10 it's just blind fans b****ing about how their team got screwed. But it was SO obvious in this game that Illinois was called for the smallest infranctions. Meachums "foul" when he smacked Scheyer in the mouth - guess what, if you get up in someones face, you have to let the guy brush the defender off a little. The 3rd foul on Randle was crap. When you have a guy driving his shoulder into someone (purposefully making contact) you can't bail him out when the defender shows some strength and doesn't give him any room. That was total and complete crap. And then the kicker was with like 10 min to play both Frazier and Puolus (?) were going for a ball, and neither one touched each others body! They just both touched the ball and Frazier gets hit with a foul. In the end it probably wouldn't have mattered - but it sure messed with the flow of the game. Illinois played solid the first 10 minutes when the refs let them play. I'm still enouraged by what I saw. It's clear the team has 8 or 9 guys with pure athletic talent. It's just going to take time for Weber to teach these guys how to play. My only fear is that he won't be able to teach them how to hit a shot. Man they are a terrible jump shooting team. Maybe I was spoiled watching D-Will, Luther and Dee for so many years... -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 01:45 PM) Wait one second there...where exactly do you come up with the claim that immigrants who come here do not assimilate? I ask as there are even recent studies which have come out looking at, for example, language trends, which find that the patterns for mexican immigrants these days are not very different at all from those of any other immigrant coming these days, or from those coming over 50-100 years ago. The first generation speaks generally the mother country's tongue, the 2nd generation mostly speaks english but can usually do both, and the 3rd generation is almost always fully english speaking. Here's one link that turned up on the Google. So the ability to speak a language is all you need?? How about trying, at least a little, to become legal? And I think these studies are all BS. In my senior sem for law school a woman is doing her study on English only laws. We get in these types of debates ALL the time. She quotes study after study about how language trends are increasing and how they are different than past immigration rushes (though she still can't comprehend the problem with having ~10M people who can't speak a lick of english). But the studies are worthless as they are all based on census data. Guess what big chunk of the population is not included in the census? The section that no speaka de ingles.

Texsox- One thing I don't understand from reading your posts is this sense of a "right" of Mexicans (or immigrants in general) to come here or to have access to our economy. When did that become part of our system? Tradition doens't hold up anymore, especially since traditionally immigrants came here to stay and assimilate - that's definitely not the trend now.

The Illini game pretty much solidified my opinion of the team thus far: 1. Meachum is a waste - McCamey should be starting. Without looking at the stats I'd imagine McCamey played more minutes total, but really it should be a no-brainer at this point. Meachum simply cannot do anything but pass and shoot when he's wide open (and even then he's only average). 2. McCamey is going to be good. He's already a good passer, I can't wait until he gets the "basketball smarts" to go with it. 3. If Randle can play like that every night, this team will contend for the Big Ten title. He doesn't need to be a focal point, he just needs to pick up some hustle baskets and put backs and stay out of foul trouble. His defense has always been excellent. I think the ESPN guys last night pretty much nailed it - when Randle plays significant minutes, the team wins. 4. Sean Pruitt has a good chance to play in the NBA (admittedly this one I wasn't sure about). It's tough to gauge his offensive skills as he didn't get the ball a ton, but when he did he scored more often than not. He has good footwork and is incredibly strong. This year it looks like he's also brought passing to his game. I'm encouraged about his potential this season. 5. Cole and Tisdale are raw, but I think they're going to be really good in another season or two. 6. The rest of the bench is...in a word...scary. Jordan, as much as I want him to suddenly become his dad, looks like me out on the court, minus the freakish athletic ability. He obviously took the physical genes from his dad, but not the mental. Hopefully Bruce can work with him over the next few years and make him a serviceable sub. Carwell - what happened to this kid? Oden called him his best opponent back in high school. I thought he was such a huge get for the program, but man is he terrible. Unfortunately he looks like a kid who's going through the motions and doesn't care about being a good player. 7. R. Alexander - welcome to the big time. He's got it all - good shot, good driving skills, good finishing skills. I'm liking what I see from him. 8. Chester Frazier has gotten so much better over the last 1.5 seasons. He runs the offense well, plays some good D and nailed some big shots. That's two games in a row he's shot well. That's a very good sign going forward. I think that's all. Tonights game should be interesting. I think we've got a good shot of knocking off Duke but we'll have to continue to play some good D. I also hope the switch from playing the zone to playing man won't hurt our offense too much. It'll be a totally different game tonight. -
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 04:35 PM) I find the blatant disregard for our nations sovereignty a major insult. I find it troubling that their nation thinks that our border is a porous gateway. I find it sickening that they are complacent in the invasion of our country. They don't like the wall, I could care less. Tell them to stop invading our country, and disregarding our laws. I came here using the proper routes. If my family couldn't of gotten in, we would of made life in Ireland. Just like the rest of our family. We wouldn't of just decided, well they said no, lets invade. I have lots of family that have worked in all sorts of countries. The minute their work VISA expires they go back. Some of them really like the area.. But its part of following the rules of that nation. But, ssirish, they NEED to break the law. They're bettering their lives by breaking the rules and abusing our moronic social service system!

QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 12:08 PM) If you think there will only be minor economic damage, you really have no idea about border life. Read some of the clips I posted. Holy Week, Christmas, etc. are huge down here. Miller International Airport has a waiting list some days, especially around back to school, for private airplane hanger space. Again, when people see Mexicans, how do they know if they are legal or illegal? When a restaurant in Philly can receive international coverage for only serving English speaking patrons, that is what foreign tourist read. It's about marketing on some of this stuff. The wall is a colossal blunder on our part. It hurts our, US, American businesses. Harms the environment, and will not solve the problem it is set out to do. I'm not disagreeing that the wall would be a big waste. I just don't understand your basis for assuming that all this business would be lost. In my mind, there's been enough extremist debate about this (where a large and loud section of the US has stood firm on its position to shoot every illegal down if they try and cross) that any potential immigrant or tourist already has enough "ammo" to decide whether to continue to shop or vacation here. I don't see how making the actions physical would make it worse.
-
I'm not denying that they don't shop here or that economically some businesses may be hurt (though I don't think it'd be that big of a deal). I'm saying putting up a fence isn't going to detract away any of that business more than simply talking about putting up a wall. The immigration issue has become a national debate already, with a large group who think she should shoot people that try to cross the border. I think if they don't have a negative view of us already they probably won't because we put up a wall. Moreover, those folks have to go through the proper channels to get here anyway, so whats it matter if that channel has a wall on either side of it? It'd be different if they could cross the border at will and then we decide to erect huge guard towers and security posts. But here they already deal with having to go through security - I don't see how any reasonabally intelligent person (which this group must include if they have the money to travel X number of hours to go shopping for luxuries) could view this as anything more than an attempt to limit the flow of illegal immigration. And frankly, if they know that and still think there's an anti-mexican bias, then oh well. Like we should give two s***s about people who can't see our right to protect who comes in/out of our country?
