QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 14, 2008 -> 10:11 AM) I was thinking what would jenks type into google to return that search? Apparently I was wrong, that was not the "best news clip" ever. This classic came up tops for a Google Search: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nda_OSWeyn8 I also enjoyed this from the same site as the news clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOc4XgBespw (Isn't there a way to put the youtube videos right in the post? Anyone know how to do that?)

QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 06:58 PM) Because that comparison works both ways. As others have noticed, we allow alcohol, which is way worse than pot, so therefor we should also ban alcohol. It isn't logically more valid than buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut Johnny's mom is letting him go. For a wide range of reasons we have allowed certain things and banned others, do you really think they all fall in a nice neat hierarchy? Once we start placing them on some scale and making it fair, we need to throw out our entire system. Fair enough, but our entire legal system is based on the "buuuuttt your honor, jimmies judge told him that he could go out and play" logic. Precisely because things don't fit in a nice hierarchy we are forced to balance, weigh factors, and decide between course X and Y. It's a perfectly plausable, and logical, argument to use societies history of accepting alcohol as a legal drug to make the point that others should also be legal. Edit: And I totally agree that our "logic" behind making some of those determinations are often mindless and completely arbitrary.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 07:47 PM) Hey Jenks, how did you find that gem? lol, i have some friends who have very boring jobs, so they go onto these blogs that post stuff like this. It's good for me because I get all the good ones without searching through all the bad.

I thought last nights was pretty meh, but it sets up more interesting questions. Is Jin really dead? Why would they choose the date of the plane crash when we know he was alive months and months afterwards? Was it all a setup? Is Jin still on the island, waiting for Sun to return or for the rest to be rescued? The Michael reveal was pretty lame. I think for the first time the Lost writers actually dropped the ball by letting people know he'd be back this season. How much cooler would that have been if we had NO idea that he'd return as a character? That would have been the bigest "WHHHAAAAAAA?" in this history of the show. Also here's another debatable point: does Michael know who Sayid and Desmond are? I couldn't really tell from the 2 second scene he was introduced. Some argue he gave a "look" to tell them to play along, others argue that nothing was there. Personally I think it's debatable, but we'll obviously find out next week. Others have also suggested that "Michael" might actually be Walt all grown up. But yeah, totally agree with the comment that we better not be getting the "I want me son!" crap again. That got old after 34 episodes.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 02:38 PM) 90% of prescription drugs? Seems like we always need new antibiotics, cancers drugs, etc. 90% was an exaggeration, but a lot of prescription drugs don't cure anything, they help people cope with whatever they got, or make life easier. Pot does the exact same. Even if you think the physical benefits of pot are BS, you can't argue that the mental effects exist. Bored? Smoke pot. Now you're content. Also I still don't understand why you don't like bringing alcohol into the argument. I mean, if you're seriously against alcohol being available, then ok. If not, alcohol is used as the base of comparison as its the only "legal" drug in the class we're talking about.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 03:03 PM) To me instances make up a trend. Trends are what generally define areas. If you want to take that to mean ALL, you are severely missing the whole point of the discussion. There isn't one single person in this thread who has said that every single member of any grouping is racist. You are making extremes out of something that isn't even there. Perhaps I am. I thought the whole thread was about classifiying a large group of people based on the actions of a very small minority.

QUOTE(The Bones @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 11:45 PM) Maybe a bit of a stretch especially since it's in Indy but after the way IU played against PSU and MSU in recent days (yes I know they beat Minnesota in between those two games) I wouldn't be surprised if Indiana just doesn't show up ready to play as hard as a team like Minnesota. That and the fact that Jamarcus Ellis has mysteriously gone missing. And just like the real tournament it's no fun if I don't pick any upsets. That's why I've got Illinois winning the whole thing and extending their NCAA streak to 9 years (or 10, can't remember).

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 02:40 PM) Would you like more instances I have seen in my life? I can talk about the race riots I saw in my hometown my senior year of High School. I can talk about the town I saw where multiple people I knew could name every non-white family in it. I can talk about the town I saw where when I was in college there, someone was having the first mixed baby in its known history. I can talk about the Klan capitol of Indiana. I saw a bunch of Muslim hijackers kill 3k plus people in one day. I know of the groups of Muslims that exist for the sole purpose of killing people from the Western world. Etc, etc. thus, every Muslim in the world is a terrorist who wants to bring an end to America. If you've got specific instances of a group of people doing something and you say the group of people is racist, fine (i.e. I saw a KKK rally, KKK members are therefore racist). But you shouldn't expand that to say the whole town is racist or the whole state is racist or the whole northern region of the country is racist. That just seems silly to me.

QUOTE(Mplssoxfan @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 02:28 PM) I think that we, as a nation, have made great strides in curbing racism. I also feel that there is much work left to be done. What more can be done? Any public figure that even remotely hints at it is thrown into the muck, usually ending careers or significantly effecting them. Affirmative-action and requirements for minority contracts have essentially eliminated access issues. Education/community issues are obviously heavily slanted towards certain races, but really what more can be done to fix that? That's not a racism issue so much as a class issue. Work discrimination occurs all the time (I work at a firm now with some really bizarre and off the wall type cases - the racism is SO obvious it's not even funny), but laws are in place to protect/remedy those situations. Voting might be an issue because of the way district/community lines are drawn - ensuring that each vote counts equally is very important. But even today I think it'd be tough to find issues there. Again I know racism exists, but I dunno what else we can do about it. There are just ignorant people out there who will do it/accept it/promote it no matter what.
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 01:37 PM) I have no doubt that racism is alive today. Should we really be basing an opinion on whose worse based on one incident? I mean, I know that's human nature, but there are assholes everywhere, it doesn't mean the town/village/region/state is the same. I agree with the statement that racism exists everywhere, though I would follow that up by saying racism as a societal issue, IMO, is about as low as we can expect it to get. There will always be some form of it practiced by ignorant asses, there's just no way to get rid of it entirely. But from my view, in my mid-twenties, going through school and work in completely diverse environments, I just don't see it. Obviously where I have lived/worked is probably not where it's going to happen, but 50 years ago I would have seen it daily, at work, at school, on the train, on the street, etc. I'll prolly get flamed for saying that, but so be it.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 12:57 PM) I was just thinking that if pot was legal and alcohol was illegal, that the alcohol drinkers would be making similar arguments and comparisons to pot. But may be we do not need to make available every escapism mood elevator in our society. Talk about a slippery slope. If we're going at it with that angle, lets get rid of 90% of prescription drugs.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 10:03 AM) Well its about that time of the year again. When some ex of one of the contestants comes out with a sex video, or naked pictures. Unfortunately this years idol contestant looks like she is trying to go trick or treat as Rogue from the X-MEN. The naked pics are in the process of being bought by the lovely national inquirer. So you figure they will leak out soon. Love the hair Rogue I'd pay money for pics of the country girl. Maybe the hottest chick in Idol history.

QUOTE(thedoctor @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 11:16 AM) in all, i like it. i don't like how they've gone about their business and was very skeptical about the network initially, but i've been pleasantly surprised with the network itself. Why's that? I thought they went about it in the perfect way. They said, hey, here's a network that'll bring in millions and millions of viewers annually, more than Hallmark, Lifetime, WE, all the god channels, etc etc, probably combined. We deserve to be on basic packages, not premium packages. Comcast was pissy because they were being told what to do. I'm amazed they held out this long. Might as well wait until the summer/fall when football starts up again. As far as the programming, I don't watch a whole lot either besides Illinois games. However I love the ability to watch other conference games that have meaning but aren't carried by ESPN - like some of the games between mich st, indiana, purdue and wisconsin. The Minnesota Bball journey seems like a pretty cool behind the scenes show. Mostly I stick to their coverage shows. They had some good specials on the bowl season, the combine, etc.

I think the reaction pot gives you depends on our lifestyle. It's a sensually enhancing drug, so anything you've done before is just going to be advanced later. If you're depressed, you're probably going to be more depressed, or even suicidal. The paranoia thing was big for me, and even though I haven't smoked in 2-3 years, it still can be. I drove so many times from central illinois to chicago with pot (nothing crazy, usually like an eighth) and had to worry about police that still to this day if i see one my heart jumps. Course I also have an irrational fear of the screeners at airports finding a knife in my bag, or that i'll fall off a balcony even if i'm 10 feet away from it. I think i'm just messed up like that, i dont really blame pot for it. I had the laziness for a while, and probably gained weight in the winter, but i tell you what, there is nothing like getting real baked to go hiking. I did that hundreds of times, even to the same parks, and it was fantastic. There's a reason people who are artistic are drawn to drugs like pot - everything becomes so much better. Hell walking the streets of chicago is crazy high. Short term memory loss i had, and mixed with the paranoia I thought it might never come back. But i'd say after about a month of not smoking the bong resin in my brain cleared and i was back to normal. Some friends didn't really have this at all, so who knows. In the end pot is great, pot is wonderful. But it has the same common sense rules that are followed (or should be followed) with alcohol - i.e. don't drive and don't perform surgeries. It's too bad our country has billions of dollars in alcohol lobbies, otherwise I think it would be legal, or at the very least illegal without massive penalties (like a speeding ticket).
-
As a major pothead through most of my college years, I can honestly say that any scientist/pyschiatrist who says pot is worse than alcohol is a complete moron (minus any damage done to your lungs, which may or may not be "worse" than what alcohol can do to your liver). The issue, like with alcohol, is at what age it's appropriate to use and the subsequent stigma attached to it. If this country wouldn't make alcohol such a big deal, young kids wouldn't drink it. Same with pot.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 03:00 PM) I think I am pretty hip to Lost but maybe I forgot this but was Alex born on the island or brought over with the boat. I think the sickness is related to the same thing Desmond suffered. It would jsut make sense to be and not have to be another whole minor plot deliniation. If Alex was born on the island she would be an exception to every other pregnant woman.....oh wait if she was pregnant before getting ot the island she'd be ok. Oh the rules. Also what is so funny about Ben asking if the rabbit had a number on it? That was a whole episode with Sawyer being "pwned" by Ben. I think that was supposed to be a fan joke more than a real character joke. Also as to the spy on the boat, I think it's gotta be something crazy. Michael is an easy answer. I'm thinking it's going to be someone like Locke, who magically time-warped onto the boat. Also, if we're led to believe that Widmore is trying to "exploit" the island, ala Jurassic Park, and we know that in the "future" no one knows how to get back to the island (at least not the public), wouldn't it be safe to assume that Ben "wins" the current fight that's going on? He also seems to be doing pretty well in his veterinarian office in Berlin.

QUOTE(shipps @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 01:59 PM) I really wanted to get into this show because alot my friends love it.I watched a couple episodes and it never got me,I could go without watching a day in the life of Baltimore drug dealers. It's one of those shows that requires you to sit through the first few episodes to set up the story. Once you get the initial jist of whats going on it starts getting into the character development.

So I don't know why it's taken me this long, but we really should have started up a Wire thread much like Idol, Lost, etc. Anyone else a fan on this board? To me it's got to be in one of the Top 5 best shows ever. I think it was 10 times better than the Sopranos (granted Season 1 was great, but the rest, IMO, were crap.) Each season of The Wire was excellent. Each had its own purpose. And I really believe each season was better than the last. It's really a shame that it has to end, as it would have been great to see this show for 8, 9, or even 10 seasons - they have plenty of material to work with I think. But in a way, I'm glad it's over as it went out as a great, great show, not one that fell into mediocrity. And really, I'd put up the finale as on par with Lost's season three finale - imo the best season finale ever. Besides the important social overtones of the show, specifically with Baltimore itself, I think it had some of the best characters ever too. Omar might have been the best robin hood type character ever (gay or not, he was still bad ass). And even Marlo was one of the better bad guys tv has had in a while. On top of the great iconic type characters, they also had a solid mix of interesting personalities. Bunk, McNulty, Chris and Snoop, Stringer Bell and Avon. Even Levy was pretty good at being the scumbag lawyer (how sad is it that the actor playing the role has been reduced to Arbys commercials?). This has been more of a ramble than anything else, I guess I'm just sad the show is officially over.

This argument is as ridiculous (and pointless) as the wii60 vs ps3 debate. However I will say this: a good computer shouldn't put you back too much. Everyone here has a computer. I'm guessing it's anywhere from 500-1500 dollars. Even the cheapest computer can be made into a good (not top of the line, but really "top" is a waste of money because like 2 games utilize the technology) gaming computer. Make sure you have a couple gigs of RAM and a graphics card in the $200-250 range and you'll be able to play anything at a normal to high graphics setting. I bought a typical gateway (nothing fancy except the 22 LCD) and an ATI 1950x pro ($250) and I can play anything and everything out there. You can waste $500+ on a better graphics card, but it really won't do much for you unless you're ubber-picky with the graphics (and i mean ubber... most times i can't tell the difference). And the minute my graphics card becomes average, I can go buy the same card (now a year or so old) for about 100-150 bucks and link them up to become "top" again.

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Mar 6, 2008 -> 05:32 PM) Resistance last? That game is one of my favorites. My rankings: 1. Resistance 2. Call of Duty 4 3. Unreal Tournament 3 These 3 are must owns IMO(all FPS though...) 4. Guitar Hero 3 5. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 6. Assasin's Creed(I really want to like it, but it's by far the buggiest game I have ever played) Yeah I just never got into it. In fact, I never even finished the game I dont think. Online was ok for a while but I think I eventually got hooked on Ninja Gaiden: Sigma (I forgot to add that on my list, that's another solid game - beautiful graphics). I agree on CoD though I have it for the PC. Anyone play Warhawk? I've been debating whether or not to get it. Some multiplayer games like that I enjoy (Counter-Strike, CoD) but others I hate (nearly all of the Battlefield series)

QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ Mar 4, 2008 -> 07:33 AM) Ya its just a matter of the developers learning how to max out the potential of the system. naturally, it is going to take longer, but games are already much better than just a year ago. The blu-ray discs can hold so much more data, that eventually games are going to much bigger/longer/thorough/graphically impressive than anything a disc for an xbox 360 can possibly hold One of the problems with the initial launch was that Sony didn't give developers enough time to learn the system, so nearly every third party game was just a port of the original...usually a bad one at that. After a year we're finally getting third party games that look better on the ps3 because developers are finally able to make the games using what the ps3 has to offer. I've had my ps3 since launch and although it sucks that I paid an extra couple hundred compared to what I can get now, I still think it was an excellent purchase. What's everyones favorite games? I'd rank them as: Uncharted Assassins Creed MLB The Show 2008 NBA 2k8 Resistance (out of the games I own)

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Mar 6, 2008 -> 08:25 AM) So any student should be allowed to sit in on any/every class they would like? When the University holds a private event, any/every student should be allowed to attend? Any/all students should be given priority to attend any school athletic event for free? There are other legitimate reasons for those restrictions that aren't based on your gender and religious beliefs/practices. -
Dude, I'm totally with you. I just took the Bar and started the job search on Monday. Uber-difficult and competitive market for new attorneys right now. I have friends who passed the Bar back in July 07 and still have nothing.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 02:07 PM) Can anyone explain how to pitch in MLB 08 The Show? I can't seem to figure it out and the booklet doesn't explain it for crap. There is some pitching meter that is not even addressed in the booklet... I've got a similiar or maybe the same issue regarding the pitching. Sometimes i'll hit the perfect 3rd click spot and the ball still goes 2 feet from where I had the pitch meter icon locked in. I don't get it.
