I've had the pleasure of knowing a few pro athletes in hockey and football, one superstar the rest role players. They all talk about the days when a kid would come up and ask for an autograph because they were excited about meeting a pro athlete. The kids would cherish them, pulling them out to show friends that they had met a celebrity. Now as often as not the kid runs to an adult and asks "how much is this one worth?" I don't blame guys that have lost their enthusiasm for fans. Back in the 60's when I was a little tot we lived on Maplewood Ave near Irving Park Rd. To avoid traffic on Irving, some of the players living in the north suburbs would short cut behind out neighborhood. My friends and I would hang out at one corner with a sign asking for autographs. I remember Santo, Kessinger, Huntley, and a few others stopping and signing autographs. I forget which pitcher threw a no hitter and received a car (Hootin?) he stopped and gave us a ride. Imagine if a 7 year old jumped in a car with a stranger today. I'm not sure if it's the money that spoiled today's athletes or if they are just reflecting society.
  6. I'm sending a Texas gift pack to whomever is closest. Picks must be in by June 15. I'm picking September 18 against the Twins.
  7. lol and then throwing up. I've had a pounding headache I've pounded my desk I've pounded my tv Why not give JM a chance to manage in the NL? At this point he's like a late night bar pick up that f***ing won't leave. He's used up his usefullness, time to move on, adios, have a great life.
  8. Unlike the last white flag, this team will catch Cleveland If they don't do something in the next week or so it doesn't matter. This team will be in such a hole no manager could dig them out. At that point let JM stay and save some money. How does he save this gig? By winning a couple of games? We are going to sputter and sputter, almost get going then sputter some more. Hasn't JR seen enough? Who cares if they win 5 of the next 8? I'm still thinking an offseason dismissal, along with a decent free agent signing, to keep the season tix checks flowing in. They need to create buzz this next offseason even more so if the Cubs continue having their "magical season". What better than hiring a new manager. If they do dump JM it will be for an interim type of guy to be replaced by a permanent person during the off season. It would also be KW last chance. Speaking of our friends up north, I just talked to a buddy who works for the Houston newspaper and the guys around the Astros organization are privately (or so he says) believe the Cubs are in it for the long haul and feel this is their (Astros) last chance for a few seasons. They actually are thinking a couple year run for the Cubs Makes my stomach churn if we aren't winning also.
  9. I can't remember a Sox team who has disappointed me more. I wish I had followed my usual rule of not looking at baseball until the NBA playoffs are finished. That way if the team really sucks I only have to care until football season. Here it is early June and already I can't stomach another game. I can't even get pissed anymore. Does this Sox team have the greatest drop from expectation to performance?
  10. This looks like the only 6/3 thread active. I'll take Valentin, I'm in the mood to b****
  11. fair enough. What this isn't your full time job

And when did he drop the "e" from his last name? Of course if he was a Valentine yesterday he would be marked return to sender. To paraphrase Jimmy Buffet, If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane . . .

Defense mode!? Well he just dropped another one . . .
  14. If a ptc doesn't play (not just doesn't start, he may pitch run/hit) does it count as a pick for the 2 picks rule? I know I have until the first pitch to change but that isn't always possible. Also can we pick by position? For example taking whoever is DH or Catching, etc.
  15. Texsox replied to Bmr31's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don;t think these guys give a s*** if they win or loose. The only thing that would have pissed me off more is if he said "yeah I dropped it, but I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance . . ."

''I think it was something that can happen to anybody,'' Valentin said of the ball off his glove. ''I didn't think it was an easy play to do it. That's how everything goes here. I don't know if I should make that play or not. It's something that for me wasn't easy. I tried my best, I didn't get into it, I dropped it and we lost the game.'' :fyou This is the f***ing attitude this team has. f*** JM for allowing it. This is his 100% problem. Either fix it or ticket to f***ing retirement.
  17. The Rocket vs. the Socket bend over ScRubs how about a little history for the friendly confined! What would be the storybook ending? Since he will have to bat, how about he drives in the winning run? Tosses a no hitter?
  18. I felt better just reading KW quotes. Thank you Cubkilla for waking me up to reality
  19. Excuse me but I thought we had a great 1-2 solid 3-4 and who cares really about the 5th starter. The pitching isn't any better than I thought way back when. The positive difference is E-LO the negative is Buerle. I think it (the pitching) just looks better standing next to our pathetic, anemic, offense.
  20. Great analysis, it's like going to school.
