  1. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Oct 13, 2015 -> 08:31 PM) Well we had a pretty busy offseason last season. How did that work out. Pretty busy offseason before 2005. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Oct 13, 2015 -> 08:31 PM) We need to build this the right way. Wasting draft picks... Protected pick. If you don't intend to be in the bottom 10 teams in the coming years, the argument is there to pick up a big free agent this year. Keep the 10 pick, lose the 32 pick, keep the 42 pick.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 13, 2015 -> 03:38 PM) Do you see revenues being higher in 2016, than 2014? I don't, which is why I don't see there being a lot of extra money to spend. Would depend on whether or not JR can be expected to spend now to augment 2016 with the knowledge that $29 million comes off the books the next year with Danks and LaRoche- $39 million if they have re-signed Alexei.
  3. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Oct 12, 2015 -> 01:49 PM) They need young talent (which is hard to get granted) not going back to the same philosophy that hasn't worked. You get young talent on your team by drafting it and not trading it away. "The same philosophy that hasn't worked" involved trading away all of their prospects for more expensive veterans. Signing free agents, who only cost money, while keeping your prospects to filter onto the MLB team is a different philosophy.
  4. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 12, 2015 -> 06:48 AM) Can't see him in Houston. Theres literally nowhere to put Hanley. Third base. Valbuena has 1 year left and also he's just Valbuena.
  5. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 11, 2015 -> 05:37 PM) Wait, now the Astros are getting Hanley? I think he'll go to the Angels or Astros assuming Sox don't get him. I can see him being phenomenal in that Houston lineup.
  6. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Oct 11, 2015 -> 05:10 PM) Boston played Travis Shaw at 1st base for the 2nd half of season once they traded Napoli at all star break. Why would they want LaRoche Shaw 25 years old --65 games-- 274 avg-13 HR 36 RBI 57 SO LaRoche 35 years old 127 games-- .206 avg-12 HR-44 RBI 133 SO Both are lefthanded. Why would Boston want LaRoche even for 1 season. If Hahn talks to them about Ramirez, they are going to want a SP back and unless it is Danks I would hope the White Sox pass. I pretty much agree with you. The article I linked to said this: "They might need to acquire a first baseman they know can handle the position defensively. They might need to acquire a first baseman with a longer track record of hitting in the major leagues than Shaw."
  7. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 11, 2015 -> 09:53 AM) Just thinking out loud here but I wouldn't mind the Sox trading for a player like Luis Valbuena to play third and supply some power from the left side. Well, Valbuena will probably be available when the Astros get Hanley. I understand that Zobrist is 34 but he will continue to be a better baseball player than Valbuena for at least 2 years, and he can play 6 positions. And won't cost anything in trade.
  8. QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 10:29 PM) This would be an absolute disaster for the franchise Why?
  9. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 08:08 PM) Both over 30, heading downhill These words do not have any meaning without context. Paul Konerko was over 30, heading downhill for at least 5 years when he was the best hitter on the Sox Ben Zobrist "heading downhill" is a better player than anyone on the Sox other than Abreu and Eaton. A-Rod is over 40 and heading downhill and he hit as well as Jose Abreu this year. Avi Garcia is under 25 and heading nowhere.
  10. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 03:24 PM) Pain in his throwing shoulder is rather concerning and if the pain came back, sure he could be moved to DH but then the Sox are left with a void at 3B... again. Not if you sign Zobrist as your starting LF and backup plan at 3B, moving Melky/Avi to DH. It's obviously not without risk but it's an avenue to upgrade 3B and OF (and OF defense) at a fraction of the years and dollars required to just sign one of Upton/Cespedes/Heyward/Gordon. And it is not one of the clown ass proposals that presumes to trade the entire farm and/or Quintana (during a rebuild!!!) to get Frazier or Longoria (not happening) or Arenado (not happening). I have to imagine 3B is where Hanley would most want to play. I don't buy that he's done at 31. If we don't get him, he is playing 3B for the Angles or Astros next year.
  11. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 02:28 PM) DeAza garbage. Viciedo garbage. Youk. Beckham. 36 year old Konerko. Adam Dunn hit .204. Couple guys had unexpectedly good years and the position players were still 16th in WAR. I can do this too. De Aza was worth 2.7 WAR. Youkilis put up a .771 OPS with the Sox. Konerko yet another .850 OPS season. Adam Dunn hit 41 home runs, good for 6th best in White Sox history. Rios good for 3.9 WAR. AJ had his best season as a baseball player. #4 team in the AL in runs scored.
  12. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 01:04 PM) No I meant 2012. AJ had hit the fountain of youth somehow and Rios had a fluke year. Other than that looks like garbage to me. So by "the position players were terrible in 2012," you meant "while the position players were very good in 2012, in the future they would eventually be garbage."
  13. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 01:36 PM) The best part is, that while the Sox lose Laroche after 2016, they'd get 4 years of Hanley, at only twice Laroche's salary! It's 3 years of Hanley and you missed the part where the Red Sox pay a significant part of his salary. There is some dollar amount at which this is a worthwhile gamble for the Sox. Either way it's an infinitely smarter move than Todd Frazier.
  14. LaRoche for HanRam plus cash and perhaps some exchange of prospects. We can put him at 3rd. If he falters at some point he moves to now open DH slot. http://www.norwichbulletin.com/article/201...009476/?Start=2 Edit: posted so that I will be congratulated as a great predictor when this happens
  15. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 12:37 PM) The position players were terrible in 2012 I'll assume you meant 2013.
  16. QUOTE (VAfan @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 08:55 AM) No money to invest in free agents. This, as pointed out multiple times in this thread, is simply the opposite of reality.
  17. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 9, 2015 -> 05:02 PM) That list is about like the Sox list - expiring contract, declining veterans. Yet still, aside from a couple of still promising prospects, they got one of the best pitchers in the NL and a stud young SS in their sell-offs. Tell me, where would they be without those 2? But Kenny and Rick showed 'em how dumb they were trading the Shark. Arrieta was trash with Baltimore. Cubs lucked out like the Sox did with Quintana. And Shark was merely a result of good timing for the Cubs (and luck that he didn't accept their $80 mil offer). While tanking for 5 years straight, they had an above average starter primed to get a huge free agent payday just before they were about to start getting good.
  18. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Oct 9, 2015 -> 04:20 PM) Whomever they trade Q for needs to be a success. They aren't trading Quintana. In other news: The Rockies aren't trading Arenado.
  19. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Oct 9, 2015 -> 01:25 PM) Ben Zobrist plays a bunch of positions but not 3rd. In his career I don't think he has played 10 games there and I think he had problems when he did. I can't speak to his ability over at 3rd. Just that he's played plenty of 2nd and short and as long as he doesn't have a really weak arm, it seems like something he could handle. I would say the biggest reason he hasn't been called to play 3rd are: Evan Longoria, Brett Lawrie, Mike Moustakas
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 9, 2015 -> 04:29 PM) Trading half of the team after spending most of the season in first place is a ridiculous idea to propose. Precisely.
  21. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 9, 2015 -> 03:52 PM) Astros got very little from their breakup, and they had a lot more to trade than the Sox did, including an in his prime Hunter Pence. They seem to have made out okay. The Cubs, however, did phenomenally well. A couple people have mentioned this. Who the hell did the Cubs get? Who did they get for: Geo Soto Derek Lee Alfonso Soriano Aramis Ramirez Marlon Byrd Ryan Dempster Carlos Zambrano Matt Garza
  22. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Oct 9, 2015 -> 03:40 PM) We have a chance to have something very special in the rotation as soon as next year...don't ruin it. Beck, Micah, Danish, Avi, Hawkins...those are the 5 I would be looking to package for a bat, preferably 3B. And I think some kind of package involving at least 3 of those guys can get us a pretty good hitter. Combine that trade with 1 smart free agent signing and I think we will be in a much better position to compete with a bounce back year or 2. My suggestions in the "my offseason plan" thread was to use some form of the 5 guys I listed to trade for Todd Frazier and then make a signing like Daniel Murphy. CF- Eaton 2b- Murphy 3b- Melky 1b- Abreu 3b- Frazier Looks like a pretty good top 5 imo and completely feasible. Trading a guy like Q would be a last ditch effort if we aren't competing by the ASG next year. I don't think we are far enough away to do that at the moment though. Selling as low as possible on Hawkins, Avi, Danish and Beck does not seem like a wise idea. I agree with you on not trading Q though. And I like Daniel Murphy potentially as well if they don't go for Zobrist, but it would be signing him to play 3rd base where he played just fine for 42 games this year. But fundamentally Murphy and Frazier (2 years) are stopgaps here. Second base has to go to Sanchez or Micah (it goes to Sanchez). You can't build a lasting competitive team by filling in 6 or 7 positions with free agents and stopgaps unless you have a $200 million payroll. Emptying the farm for 2 years of Frazier is what you do if you're already a playoff team.
  23. They got a ton of salary relief which allowed them to buy Jose Abreu among other free agents. We got someone to pay Rios' salary. That's a win.
  24. Someone more versed in WAR: How much better than Trayce Thompson does Avi have to hit just to be of equal value given their difference in defensive performance? To me, there is just no way that Avi is a better baseball player than Trayce as of April 2016. Plus there's hope the Sox might use the opportunity of the protected pick to sign one of the big FAs, many of whom are outfielders. Avi in AAA might get the message across that he's not an everyday player unless he gets a lot better.
  25. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 9, 2015 -> 10:05 AM) If LaRoche sucks again next year I think the Sox won't be afraid to bench him, it doesn't really hurt to eat the money in the last year of a contract. Same with Danks. I assume they will give LaRoche 6 or 8 weeks of playing against righties to see if he can hit like his old self. They'd get virtually nothing at all in cash relief or players by dumping him. Best upside is in seeing if he can hit righties and help the team or recoup some trade value. I have no problem with sending Avi to AAA to figure out how to defend and slug.
