  1. QUOTE(S720 @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 05:32 PM) In the Marlins forum, one guy wrote that WFAN Radio has mentioned that. In addition, according to NY Times, Beltran has called Delgado in trying to lure Delgado to the Mets. According to Jayson Start, the Mets GM Minaya and Mets owner Fred Wilpon will meet with him. If the Mets want Delgado, they WILL get him. The Mets also have a $100 million payroll with something like 13 more spots to fill. Unless they get rid of some salary [what teams will take big money guys like Piazza, Cameron, and Floyd, without dumping their own high priced busts?], Delgado isn't likely to be a good fit. Esp with the Mets horrible bullpen. More likely the Mets would go with an Olerud type at 1B, and get some pitching via trade/ salary dump.
  2. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 03:06 PM) Don't forget the fact that we'd have to give something ... something more than just roster fodder ... to get him. If you think about it, which hole is easier to fill, whether in house or via trade---an impact 2b/ #2 hitter/ leadoff hitter, who has speed, and solid defense? Or a LH set up man in a guy like Marte? Even if it created a short term hole, the current bullpen could absorb his loss.
  3. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 12:30 AM) I'm saying no to Soriano because he embodies everything the Sox are trying to get away from. Horrible Defensively, Obp issues, Nasty Contract, Swings from the heels. no thanks. I concur
  4. QUOTE(S720 @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 04:55 PM) Folks, don't get your hope too high. Mets just offer Delgado 4years/$52 mils. Delgado is heading to NY! And if that's the case, Luis Castillo is heading nowhere except staying with the Marlins. Where did you hear this? I've been looking around and haven't heard anything like this? If true, no one would prob. top that offer.
  5. Thought I'd update a little. It looks like the MArlins are in a good position to land Delgado. The Rangers and Mets both needing to clear salary before getting Delgado. And the Marlins offer of 3 yrs and $35 mill, even if deferred, seems the best on the board. that said, it looks like the Marlins fans know Castillo would have to be moved if they landed Delgado. From various fan sites, it looks like they'd approve. With everything quiet on the 2b front for the sox, maybe they are playing the waiting game, to see if Castillo becomes available. If he does, the sox would go after him in a heartbeat. I'd think they would target him even more than they have Vazquez. Let's go Marlins, land Delgado!
  6. QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 06:58 PM) For all of you people with this Vazquez hard on... We have a guy in Garland who like it or not is going to make 3.5 Mil who we know can put up an ERA under 5 in Cell... You'd rather give that up plus our best prospects and the most solid player to come out of our minor league system in years (Rowand) and a young player who is decent (Harris) for a guy who is going to cost 11 Mil and very possibily would piss his pants in the Cell. If the money was even maybe but Vazquez just doesn't deserve that money and sure as hell Arizona isn't going to give us any back. no one has said that the sox will trade Rowand, Harris, Garland and top prospects for Vazquez. As for the "Vazquez hard on" it seems the sox braintrust has one, as they are the ones looking for Byrnes as probable trade bait to AZ. Don't kill the messenger. But a team who trades for Vazquez [if they give up good talent] is likely to get some cash back, to make his salary around $8 mill a yr.
  7. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 03:19 PM) The only problem is that Arizona has expressed an interest in Byrnes. Don't you know we're making the trades not them?!
  8. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 01:50 AM) No it's not. You don't look at stats close enough. Why has the CWS lost the div 3 yrs in a row? Because the top 6 ALC pitchers have shut them down. They own winning records vs the CWS. Anybody can hit the weaker pitching but can you hit the best pitching of your rivals? Those are the guys you need to win. Period. The Sox have fared poorly against journeymen, and unknown rookie pitchers as well. The sox inability to score runs off mediocre pitching has been more of a problem than them facing the toughest P's. Two huge problems the last two yrs: The sox couldn't beat Det. in 2003, and had a losing record on the road in 04. Each had nothing to do with the top 6 ALC P's.
  9. QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 02:08 PM) What if you were presented with the option of either Pods or Burns + Garland to get Vazquez, which goes? If AZ would take Pods, I'd be one happy camper. The Sox wouldn't and shouldn't give up Pods. They have two RH hitters in Rowand and Dye set for at least 2 yrs. They don't need another RH hitter, at the expense of Pods.
  10. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 02:41 PM) I assume you mean a positive impact? Of course. Many Sox farmhands have made an impact over the years, just not so positive
  11. QUOTE(quickman @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 01:34 PM) For th elast three years Munoz was suppose to be Zito. He is not. never will be, never can be. He will have one more year to try to prove he is a bullpen member. he is blessed he is lefthanded, otherwise he would be done. lefthanders will continue to get a break because they can pitch to one guy in a certain situation. I think Beane is alot smarter than this board when it comes to our farm system. Just my opinion. I'm not comparing Munoz to Zito. Just Arnie's curve has been talked about a lot. I don't know what his future is. Yet he's young, has a good, live arm and a LHP. Guys have had 10-15 yr careers with less
  12. We threw well in Sept when put in the bullpen. Whether Beane likes Munoz or any of the Sox young players who knows. I do know Munoz has put up some good stats as far as low BB's, and avg'g about a K per inning through the minors. Also, not giving up that many HR's in his career. What is he 21, 22? I think Munoz could be a factor for the Sox this yr, if he's not traded. One of these yrs, some young sox pitchers have to make an impact, right?
  13. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 01:04 PM) If the Sox do aquire Byrnes and Dotel, Bean will probably want Harris and a highly rated prospect in return. Knowing Bean it will probably be either Brian Anderson or Ryan Sweeney. But if this trade happens it makes our pen even STRONGER and it also could mean the trade for Javier Vazquez as you guys already mentioned. Garland and Byrnes for Vazquez makes sense to Arizona, and it makes sense for us, solidifying our rotation and it makes our bullpen stronger. ALSO, Oakland gets their 2B and some talented prospects to add to their rebuilding plans. All in All everyone leaves this deal a winner. GO FOR IT KW!!! If this happens the only move left is that darn 2B we need! Hopefully that happens soon! the A's wouldn't trade Dotel. Even if they did, he wouldn't be worth the high price it would take to get him. The sox trading just for Byrnes is more likely
  14. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 12:09 PM) I think the Byrnes/Garland for Vazquez+ is probably on the money, but the rest of it is a total speculation. We really have no clue who Beane would want. The a's are reportedly looking for help at 2b. They have 2 RH hitters, in Ginter and the guy who missed all of 2004. Willie's LH bat and good OBP should appeal to Beane. The A's also could use a LH bullpen arm. They only have Ricardo Rincon who threw 30 innings last yr. Munoz and his zito like curve may be a match. But we'll see how this all pans out
  15. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:04 AM) The Sox interest in Byrnes may be directly tied to the DBacks interest in him (per Rotoworld). I don't know what it would take to pry him from Oakland, but he may end up being part of a Vazquez deal if we get him. Also, if the sox work out a 3 way deal with AZ [seeing how AZ couldn't get Byrnes from the A's themselves], AZ would have to kick in some of their cash [from the yanks and dodgers deals] to the Sox with Vazquez. What the A's would want for Byrnes from the sox, who knows? Harris, Munoz or Diaz, and another prospect?
  16. AZ certainly doesn't have the prospects or young players the A's would likely want for Byrnes. I know ALex Cintron is the best AZ has avail. for trade. But Harris is better than him The Sox could have Alex Cora locked up w/ a handshake deal, trade Harris + for Byrnes, and trade Brynes and Garland for Vazquez. Interesting to say the least. I think all this manuevering shows how much the sox would love to have Vazquez.
  17. Good call. The Sox know the DBacks want a CF type like Byrnes, who can leadoff. The Sox try to get him from the A's [prob. not for any starters, maybe Harris] and in turn pkg Brynes in a deal for Vazquez. Makes sense.
  18. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 07:22 PM) The New York Post says that the cubs have upped the $ offer to make a swap of Floyd for Sosa financially even for the Mets. But the Mets want more & they might just get it. The Mets are in a position to blackmail the cubs into offering more $ with Sosa in exchange for the Mets dropping out of the Maggs bidding. The Mets are prepared to out-bid the cubs for Maggs. Wth NY, BOS, ANA, & LAD soon to be tapped out financially that leaves the cubs & Mets as the two biggest bidders for Maggs. If the cubs were smart, they'd pay almost everything the Mets would want. To get out from under Sosa's contract, and get him away from the team, any price would be worth it.
  19. QUOTE(babybearhater @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 08:37 PM) Maybe spending more time around Arow's work ethic, and Spods base stealing expertise will allow him to grow in those aspects of the game. I'd rather go for the real deal in a guy like Castillo than hope Harris learns the finer points of the game by osmosis
  20. QUOTE(chi-guy2 @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 07:30 PM) this would equal no castillo if he went to the rangers Probably.
  21. QUOTE(quickman @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 06:21 PM) Here is a thought although you will all hate it. Its pure speculation and proably will not come true. What if we were interested in bynes to take rowands place. We send garland and rowand to AZ for vazquez. AZ was rumored to want Rowand and Garland before during the Johnson three way. Just a thought. Not liking it but it makes sense. AZ wants Rowand, we have not signed him, and I bet he is holding out for more money. We must far apart money wise or this thing would have gotten done. Just something to think about. I thought the same thing.
  22. Looks like the marlins are going hard after Delgado. One thing FLA has going for them over TEX is they'd keep Carlos at 1B. And TEX needs to dump salary first [soriano] in order to afford him. Go Marlins! From the Miami Herald: MARLINS Offer to Delgado: three years, $35M BY CLARK SPENCER The Marlins are prepared to award Carlos Delgado the richest contract in club history. Even so, the team's three-year offer of about $35 million for Delgado might not be enough to persuade the free agent first baseman into flaunting his home run swing in South Florida. The New York Mets remain interested in Delgado despite being close to agreeing with Carlos Beltran on a seven-year, $119 million deal and earmarking $53 million for pitcher Pedro Martinez last month. And Delgado is said to have a hankering for the Texas Rangers, who also have eyes for him. TOP OFFER? Still, the $35 million, which likely would be parceled out beyond 2007 in deferred payments, could be the largest figure offered to Delgado so far. The Baltimore Orioles reportedly made him a three-year, $30 million offer in December and were rejected. The Marlins have a definite need for a left-handed run producer, and Delgado would fit the bill. Delgado, 32, is coming off one of his worst seasons, during which he hit 32 home runs and drove in 99 runs for the Toronto Blue Jays. The season before, he hit 42 home runs with 145 RBI. PREFERS RANGERS But The Fort Worth Star-Telegram has reported that Delgado would like to play for the Rangers, and the Mets are in a spending spree that might not end when they finalize their deal with Beltran. If the Marlins are successful in signing Delgado, he would take over at first base for Jeff Conine, who has undergone two shoulder operations during the offseason but could spend time in the outfield.
  23. QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 05:17 PM) The only thing Harris has the talent for is Triple-a.. Yes he has the Def range.. but so did Royce Clayton, and he didn't last to long. I don't know why people are in love with this guy so much? Willie has major league talent. You should give him that, he showed it last yr. Whether his talent [and attitude, makeup, etc] is a fit for the sox, KW and co. don't seem to think so. For some reason, the comparison between Willie and D'Angelo Jimenez comes to mind.
  24. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 04:59 PM) I truly believe Alex Cora will be a member of the 2005 White Sox, making any possibilty of trading for Castillo completely moot...just speculation on my part, but Kenny is in the position where he does NOT need to make any more moves. If the perfect deal presents itself Kenny might consider it, otherwise, look for that middle infield spot to be filled via free agency (namely Alex Cora). The fact that KW doesn't have to make a move, and other teams do [to fill big holes, free up salary, etc], puts the sox in a good position to pick up a guy via trade for less than it would other wise. KW could step in when another team has to deal, like if FLA signed Delgado. Castillo could be had for less, as the M's could justify trading Luis in order to free up cash to get Delgado. I don't think Cora will be on the sox. If they wanted him, they'd have gotten him by now that Iguchi seems like a memory. I do think KW is sitting out for a "semi-perfect deal" or two. With various names being tossed about linked to the sox, like Durham, Byrnes, and Rollins, it sure sounds like KW is looking to improve the club.
  25. the A's could probably use Willie. Yet it would take more than Willie to get Byrnes. Unless the Sox traded Timo, they can't really use Byrnes enough to justify his trade price.
