McCarthy still adjusting
QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Mar 21, 2006 -> 02:40 PM) I am a little nervous about BMac. I think someone like Buehrle can take the ball any inning and do just fine. Some pitchers are as fragile as a feather and when you mess with their psyche, everything goes to crap. BMac's "psyche" is fine. It's his location that was off. He's no where near being "fragile".

Thornton Tips His Pitches..
Everyone knows this guy is a reclamation project. Did anyone expect to see him change uniforms and pull a Boone Logan? I'll reserve judgment until after the sox have had him a bit. But the guy should start in AAA, not with the sox. He could easily turn a 3 run game that he's mopping up into an absolute blowout.

Joe Borchard Traded to Seattle
QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 11:13 PM) Seems like some people, for whatever reason, are upset that Gload is pretty much a lock to make the team more than anything. I've advocated for Gload because it keeps Thome off the field. Keeping Jim healthy should be the sox first concern. I didn't see Borchard helping the sox this yr. And the sox would be damn lucky if they get Thornton to help any as well.

Joe Borchard Traded to Seattle
I haven't waded through the 10 pages, but are there people who are outraged at this deal? Joe. B. had little to no value. He'll be lucky to be a 4th OFer somewhere. I'm suprised they even got Thornton. This is basically trying to get something from nothing. A LHP who can throw 93-98 is at least something.

Who's on the radar?
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 19, 2006 -> 12:22 PM) I don't see the Phillies trading away any of their bullpen arms. That was an area of weakness for them last year and they have tried to improve it this offseason. They will probably wait for a guy like Luis Terrero of the Diamondbacks to be placed on waivers or trade a bag of balls for him. Looking at them, the Phils don't really have any decent bullpen arms to trade.

Who's on the radar?
*Looks like the Phils could use Borchard. Seeing how they don't have a 4th OFer let alone a 5th. I haven't looked at their bullpen guys but the Phils would seem to be a place to look for a trade. It said in the article the Phils are looking for an Ofer who hits left handed--hollins is righty. -------------------------------------------- Rays shopping Hollins March 19 Philadelphia Inquirer (scroll down) (registration required): "The Devil Rays have a glut of outfielders and are looking to deal Damon Hollins, who entered Friday leading AL teams with seven stolen bases in exhibition play... The Phillies are looking for a fifth outfielder."

What is the word on Boone Logan?
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 19, 2006 -> 03:24 AM) Logan is in this pen just based on lack of choices. Obviously its great he has taken this opp. to really impress, but its not like the Sox have another obvious choice. If the Sox can get a solid vet to fill out the pen, Boone should still make the team, and I would be a very good spot to be in, because with another reliable arm, we could basically pick and choose where Boone could pitch, and get him some great expierence in the process. With that said, if Boone makes it to June with the Sox, it would be simply amazing. Well said. If Boone can continue this during the reg. season, it would be a hellava story. Right now, he's the most impressive of a bad bunch of LHP's. But to expect him to do this all season long....I agree, this isn't likely to happen. I could certainly see the sox pick up a vet who could give them 50-70 innings, and pick the spots Logan can come in.

Sox looking at Atlanta's RHP Oscar Villarreal
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 01:17 PM) I think Borchard has more trade value than Ozuna. Borchard is 27 year old outfielder with power and the Marlins have a hole in LF (Chris Aguila). They could also use some more pop in their lineup, especially playing in that stadium. Teams might still want to take a chance on him. Ozuna is a 31 year old backup utility guy at best. He is fairly replaceable. Afterall, look at the scrubs that the article mentions as guys that the Marlins could be interested in -- Desi Relaford and Tomas Perez. Around the league, Ozuna would probably have more value than Joe B. would though. Joe B. could only play as a starting Of or 4th Ofer for a few teams, like the Marlins. Ozuna could help a lot of teams in case their starting SS got hurt. "Scrubs" like Ozuna and Tomas Perez are still valuable.

Sox looking at Atlanta's RHP Oscar Villarreal
Interesting also that the marlins are looking for someone to replace awol Pokey reese. Pablo Ozuna would have to look nice to them. He'd bring back a better pitcher than Joe B. would. I don't know how much time Ozuna will get with Cintron on board. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...-sports-marlins

Bullpen giving Guillen more grief than relief
QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 12:28 PM) I love Ozzie. If they're horses***, call them horses***. Why sugarcoat it for the press? All you have then is sugarcoated horses***. His comments also seem to suggest Logan isn't going to be the answer. At least that he shouldn't be depended on keeping up his ST success

Sox looking at Atlanta's RHP Oscar Villarreal
Nate Bump of FLa is possibility. More than likely, he could be traded for Joe B. straight up. He's a GB pitcher, throws more than an inning [11 of his 31 appearances he threw more than an inning] and would seem to fit in the Vizcaino role. I think he was coming back from surgery in 05. But he threw more than 100 innings for the Marlins back in 03 [in AAA and in the bigs] when Ozzie was there. Someone he'd be familiar with.

Who's on the radar?
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 02:38 AM) Okay, so what other options are out there guys? I think that Beane would try to rob anyone for Juan Cruz since he's having a great spring so far. I think we'll know more once the final roster spots are secured around the league. Probably a veteran bullpen guy making more than $1 mill. who's beat out by younger, cheaper talent.

Who's on the radar?
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 02:31 AM) Okay, here we go... You seem to think that Osuna is too old for our bullpen even though he's the same age as Politte (32) and a year younger than Hermanson. Then you say that Hideo Nomo would give us the same performance as Osuna out of the bullpen. Hideo Nomo is a 37 year old starter who has never really pitched out of a bullpen so how can you make this assumption? That doesn't make much sense to me. Having thrown such few innings the last few yrs, due to injuries, is mostly the reason why I'd pass on Osuna. He last threw 50 innings back in 2003, 2002? You never asked me why I'd pass on him. Now you know

Who's on the radar?
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 02:24 AM) Well would you think Osuna or Nomo has more left in the tank right now? It's going to be hard for the Sox to trade for a guy who can help right now and start in the bullpen straight away. 29 other teams want the same thing, and there's not much on the market at the moment. I'd suggested trading for guys like Jermaine Van Buren who won't be on their team's bullpen because of too much depth. If that option can't be taken, and you don't want to give up too much for a good reliever, unless you want to sign someone like Danny Graves who could be released from the Indians if he doesn;t make their bullpen (4 guys fighting for 1 spot), then you have to look at signing a guy like Osuna. Nomo has thrown some innings the last few yrs. But both aren't very good options. With the high price for relievers, I thought a decent option would be to have Ray Liotta throw in the pen. Getting a guy who has some upside makes sense. We'll know some guys who are the 26th, 27th roster guys like Van Buren in a few weeks

Who's on the radar?
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 02:19 AM) Read the thread again. I'm not the one telling you to stop talking about a certain player or poking fun at your "man-love" for Juan Cruz. I can read. You felt obligated to correct my joke that Osuna was close to 40. I also know that when you get something stuck in your mind you tend to go a little overboard. This might be one those cases.

Who's on the radar?
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 02:13 AM) I don't think people are expecting Osuna to jump right in and perform for the Sox if we did sign him. I'd sign him on a MLC, let him start the year in Charlotte, and if he performs well there and if there is a need on our bullpen to upgrade still, you've got an option in Osuna. Always good to cover your bases and have extra options, as we've seen for Hermy's injury. Most people are expecting the sox to pick up a guy who could start the yr with the sox though. IMO, the sox got Nomo for the same things people are expecting from a guy like Osuna--help for AAA and an outside shot at helping this yr.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 02:08 AM) And read through the thread again. Almost every one of your comments regarding Osuna was wrong so I had to correct them. If you read through it again, slight exaggerations are used to poke fun at your man love for Antonio

Who's on the radar?
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 01:57 AM) The point is that McCarthy will be eating up innings, isn't it? That was Vizcaino's role last season. Hermanson pitched an inning per outing last season and he's the one we have to replace. Afterall, he's the guy who's injured right? By the way, Juan Cruz pitched 32.2 innings last season and was shellacked to the tune of a 7.44 ERA AND he would cost talent to acquire. BMac isn't just going to eat innings. He'll play an important role during key parts of games. Viz often was one of the last guys called. Bmac won't be in that same Viz role. BTW, Cruz threw over 100 innings last yr--75 in AAA as a SP. And the 32 with the A's. My point is Cruz may not be the guy the sox get. But he's a hellava lot better option than a guy like Osuna you've been advocating on virtually every thread. Enough.

Who's on the radar?
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 01:44 AM) I thought that we needed a guy to replace Hermanson and pitch one maybe two innings at a time? McCarthy is replacing Vizcaino. Hermanson pretty much pitched an inning per outing last season (57 games, 57.1 IP). Bmac will see a lot of time with the game on the line--6, 7, 8th innings. He shouldn't be doing Vizcaino mop up duty. But having a guy who can go more than an inning each time out would be very important. Osuna barely saw two innings last year

Who's on the radar?
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 01:24 AM) Antonio Osuna is 32 years old. He's the same age as Politte and a year younger than Hermanson. Osuna's last good season was with the Padres in 2004 (37.2 IP, 2.45 ERA). He also pitched well with the Yankees in 2003 (50.2 IP, 3.73 ERA). I'm not saying that he's a GREAT option but he's damn sure better than Tim Redding as a replacement for Hermanson. I wouldn't mind Juan Cruz either but who knows if he's available and who knows what Kenny would have to give up for him? Osuna is a free agent and could be acquired for next to nothing (a minor league deal). The sox need a guy who can give them innings, and go more than 1 inning at a time, esp. during mop up time. Osuna isn't that guy

Who's on the radar?
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 17, 2006 -> 11:49 AM) Don't be so sure... Juan Cruz (career stats): 4.36 ERA | 1.44 WHIP | .250 BAA | 8.45 K/9 Antonio Osuna (career stats): 3.68 ERA | 1.31 WHIP | .238 BAA | 9.23 K/9 Obviously the stats are a bit skewed because Cruz started 23 games for the Cubs. Cruz has a lot more upside but I wouldn't exactly put my money on him to outperform Osuna. If Cruz is throwing strikes he's fine but he is known to have trouble with his command at times and then he's pretty much worthless. Osuna is like 40 isn't he. If this was 2002 maybe. But the 2006 Osuna should be nowhere near a playoff contender, stats be damned. He hasn't thrown many innings the last few yrs. Cruz could give the sox some innings. He threw 107 2/3 last yr [with 75 in AAA as a SP]. He threw 74 IP's in '04 with ATL. The sox need someone to eat innings, ala Vizcaino. I could see Cruz throwing a lot of mop up innings. Whoever the sox get should be able to do both--eat innings and have some upside/ talent.

Jenks lost velocity?
Right now Jenks, like most bullpen guys, is just throwing to get loose, to shake off the offseason rust. No worry here.
