QUOTE(Brian @ May 28, 2006 -> 12:11 AM) I'm all for leaving Anderson out in CF. He's a rookie. Let him play. Uribe is the one pissing me off. He is s*** without his defense and todya he throws another DP ball away and than can't bunt. I hope Cintron is playing tomorrow. Well said. If Crede wasn't ranging far to his left, I'd hate to see how badly Uribe would be hurting the sox Hawk mentioned that the sox have just surpassed the missed DP's from all of last yr with Uribe's miss today QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ May 28, 2006 -> 12:26 AM) DickAllen's post was not split off for some reason but I wanted to respond: I hope that's not what KW's thinking. We probably have the worst CF situation in the AL, so it would be foolish to hold out for only "great" players when even average ones would suffice. With that said, I don't want anything to do with Pierre or Erstad, but Finley is worth following for the next couple of months. The sox are far from the worst Cf situation. Esp with Anderson's above avg glove and range. The guy's a rook with skills on defense and offense. He needs some time. IMO, he'll be around all year and be a big help down the stretch.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 27, 2006 -> 10:52 AM) I don't see Fields defense in the OF as a "huge" issue. He's got a pretty good arm, and he should be able to learn the position ok. If he's going to make it for us, it's going to be for his offensive output. I don't think you can trade a guy who's doing what he's doing offensively in his 1st season of AAA, just for bullpen help. Fields is worth more than bullpen help. I wrote "pitching help", meaning mulitple arms [someone who could contribute for the stretch run into playoffs, and maybe a good arm or two from the minors]. Though who knows what the market will be come July as every team wants a very good late inning guy. Hopefully it won't take a Fields. I see Owens as expendable, certainly Rogowski. Maybe a SP from AA or AAA. To get the maximum value for Fields a deal would have to be made in the offseason.
  3. beck72 replied to DBAHO's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Crede is a cornerstone to build around. His kind of glove doesn't come around often. He hits better than .250 and he's worth every penny. I doubt Fields would play the kind of defense the sox need and want in the OF. The sox don't want to sacrifice defense for offense again. Right now, Fields has the most value of any Sox prospect. He's most likely to be dealt for pitching help at the deadline.
  4. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ May 22, 2006 -> 09:52 PM) Garcia's ERA (3.92) is now back down to his career ERA (3.93) and he has a 7-1 record. He could be a #1 pitcher on some teams and would be a #2 pitcher on most teams. He should definately net us some goodies if the Sox decide to trade him in the offseason and he does make the most sense to trade. Do you mean "The Untouchable" Rich Hill? The guy that Jim Hendry wouldn't trade for Adam Dunn? If the Sox want BMac to start in 2007, having Garcia, Vaz, MB and Jose around makes more sense. You keep the more experienced and successful SP's around to ease Mac into the rotation. Garland and his self prophesed "lack of confidence" should be gone [Why Jon lacks confidence in his stuff after 2005 is beyond me?!] Jon would still net a good return being under contract for 2 more years. Freddy would be under contract for only 1 more.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ May 21, 2006 -> 01:54 PM) What if Montero AND Logan go down, Contreras comes off the DL and Nelson comes up? How long has Nelson been down there, only a week or more? It's only a matter of when Nelson comes up. Both the rooks will be gone within a week. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ May 21, 2006 -> 08:28 AM) Thornton is consistently hitting 97-98mph on the speedgun these last few outings. Appears healthy to me. The slider Thornton threw to Jacque Jones today is EXACTLY the type of pitch he needs to harness. There was no radar gun available on FOX, but I'm guessing it had to be around 85-89 mph. Jones just froze at the plate. You have a effortless 97 mph fastball coupled with a high 80's breaking ball--even if it isn't very sharp--and you'll prove to be a valuable pitcher for someones bullpen. Hopefully ours. As I've always said, you can teach someone a certain pitch; can't teach velocity. I didn't see his slider. But if he can throw that or any offspeed pitch for a strike, he'll be huge. Players then just can't sit on his FB. One thing I've noticed, Thornton looks very composed and calm out there. He didn't have that look to him during spring.
  6. QUOTE(Walker2Baines @ May 21, 2006 -> 07:57 AM) This is a pretty stupid topic. If you didn't respect Pods after what he did for us in 2005, then you're a f***ing idiot. Pods shouldn't need to beat the s*** out of that pussy, to gain your respect. He should already have your respect. Actually, the jist of the topic has to do with Pods and Anderson being in Nuke's "Cool Book" for their actions. You don't like the topic, don't respond
  7. A lot seems to be going right for the Tigers now. Hats off to them. They are playing good ball. but I'd be very, very surprised if they continued at the pace they are now. Esp the pitching. Leading the league in ERA by a run a game in mid-May is one thing. But expecting their young arms in both the rotation and bullpen to continue that roll to the allstar break and beyond is a lot to ask for.
  8. beck72 replied to Ndgt10's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I hope Jon gets back on track--the sooner the better. It's a long season and the sox are going to need him. Right now, though, he's definitely the sox 5th SP. And he probably will be for the season. He might not get his ERA under 4 this yr. It'll be interesting to see how much Jon improves and how he finishes the yr. With a no trade only through 06, and BMac around, if Jon doesn't get his act together, he could be dealt in the offseason. You don't want to bring that up. But that's life in professional baseball. And that's for next yr. Another possibility if Jon's struggles last for a while, is having Bmac in the rotation this yr. It's all based on performance. Ozzie won't just keep throwing Jon out there if he's giving up 7 runs a game into July. Jon has the stuff to be the SP the sox need. He just needs to ride out the storm. Hopefully he gets back on track. Yet alternatives exist. No one can rest on their 2005 yr, and can stink up 2006 w/o consequence. The sox will give him every opportunity to get his act together. But their is a time when reality sets in and the sox would have decisions to make
  9. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Apr 25, 2006 -> 10:11 PM) I love it, but I also know that Haeger has about a .5% chance of pitching meaningful innings for the White Sox. Knuckleballers are very erratic, and I can't imagine the Sox would give any role to a pitcher who has so little control if an outing is dominant or gas can. I hope he does well to entice a more useful (to us at least) piece from team that could use Haeger's services (Pirates, KC, FLA, etc.) Well said. A guy like Haeger has much more value to a low budget, non-contending team than a team like the sox who are turning into perennial World series contenders. He wouldn't sniff the sox rotation for years and his out pitch isn't well suited for the bullpen. If he continues his success into July, or at least comes back to earth a bit, his trade value would likely never be higher. Whether the sox get immediate help or a bullpen piece for the future by trading him, I'd say Charlie's days are numbered with the sox org.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 7, 2006 -> 04:14 AM) They seem to want a knuckleballer in the pen for whatever reason. Heager would be an absolute disaster as a middle reliever, AJ and Widge would go f***ing bonkers. I love to see Haegar pitching lights out in AAA. I see him being moved at the deadline for whatever help is needed for the sox. Haegar might be fine in some other teams rotation. Yet when a knuckleballer is off, he might not make it out of the 1st inning. The sox want more from their SP's [like consistency, the ability to go 6, 7 innings even w/o their best stuff, etc] than one trick pitch. Guys like BMac, Broadway, Liotta and Lumsden are / will be better fits than Charlie
  11. Carlos got the win last night vs. Kinston, going 5 innings of 1 run ball. He's now 1-1 on the yr, with an ERa of 4.00. His complete stats for the year: http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil..._pbp&pid=448614
  12. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Apr 9, 2006 -> 03:13 PM) Get used to it, until we get our act together. We fans can get used to it or not, it doesn't matter. But the key is will the players do something about it? I think so.
  13. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Apr 9, 2006 -> 03:52 PM) But anyways they have the right to chant that with the way we've been playing. True, but you'd think that their fans would be more concerned with putting pressure on their owners to put a winning ball club on the field rather than worrying about what the Sox are doing.
  14. QUOTE(White Sox Fan For Life @ Apr 9, 2006 -> 12:15 PM) I agree with you, but we need to be patient for one more week. It is just the beginning of the season and everyone needs to shake off from spring training. If they don't shape up then it's time to say oh boy. But in my opinion I think we did better than any other night so far look Javier Vazquez pitched great yesterday at least we know that we have on decent starter, but when Cliff Polite came in he had to give up a home run to Mike Sweeney! Also it appears yesterday that the wind was kind of strong yesterday because a couple of the balls that Crede hit looked like they wanted to go out the field to be a home run, but the wind push that ball back in. Welcome to sox talk I'm not panicking and the Sox players aren't either. I was just trying to point out that players held that "us against the world" edge last year. I'd expect something similar this year as the players stick together pretty well. The chanting should show the players very clearly that the 2006 season will be the sox vs, the baseball world. The rest of MLB is out to get the sox--even the perennial cellar dwellars. Beating the world champs can give their fans a reason to cheer and get bragging rights. the sox can certainly expect more of this as the year goes on.
  15. From the Tribune: "They already have lost two of three to Cleveland, whom they beat in 14 of 19 games last year, and have fallen twice to division doormat Kansas City, including a 4-3 loss Saturday that prompted chants of "overrated" from fans whose team lost 106 games last season."--------------------------- Couldn't help but notice this little tidbit tucked away in the story. This is certainly one of those "us against the world" moments that could bring the sox together. Not that the Sox are playing without motivation. These guys played with a chip on their shoulders all of last year. And have been players who have been written off or have had their talent questioned at various points in their baseball careers. So the makeup of these sox players is strong and they should battle all year. Yet when a team is coming off a 106 loss season [and haven't even siffed .500 for years] and their fans want to mock a world series champ, the sox have to realize the entire baseball world is out to topple them. Not only do other teams want to beat them, they want to rub the sox noses in it, embarass and humiliate them. If the sox ever thought repeating would be easy [no one probably did], getting mocked by KC fans should wake them in a hurry. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines
  16. QUOTE(Linnwood @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 12:26 AM) Is it wrong that I feel bad for the Royals? Yes
  17. QUOTE(Disco72 @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 07:09 PM) When the biggest questions on your team are the 3rd, 4th, or 5th guys out of the bullpen, you're doing pretty well. Way to put the Sox problems into context! [i'll correct you just a bit and say the biggest question marks are the 5th and 6th bullpen guys--behind Jenks, Cotts, Politte, and McCarthy]
  18. QUOTE(beautox @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 02:44 PM) I agree, and did anyone listen to KW during yesterdays game with the braves in the booth with Hawk and DJ? he said hes going to follow the braves philosphy and stockpile our starting pitching and when the opertunity arises draw from our farm. I would'nt be supprised if Brandon does'nt sniff the rotation fulltime till after '07 all the while getting better via the bullpen. i know alot of people both here and on WSI are antsy about getting brandon into the rotation, but id rather take 5 vets and let brendan evlove into more of a scot shields role in the bullpen, his time will come but for now he affords us the oppertunity to start a dynasty on the south side in the bullpen. Welcome to Soxtalk! I think it's a lot easier to find and groom bullpen guys than it is starting pitchers. The difference between having a rookie or young pitcher get 1-3 outs compared to 18 or 21 is like night and day. The sox overall are in pretty good shape pitching wise, esp. with 6 healthy, high quality SP's. I certainly expect BMac to do well in the bullpen. He throws strikes with 3 pitches. Not many relievers can do that. Hell, not a lot of starters can do that. He is the most likely to take over for Hermanson. Not that he could step in as closer. But he'll be very valuable to the Sox if he stays healthy. Hopefully his body responds to the relief role. He has the attitude. Now he just needs his health to cooperate. The question is will Thornton and Boone be able to give the sox 100 innings between them? Time will tell.
  19. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 12:34 PM) mlbtraderumors.com = not reality This site is fantasyland. Unless you think that the Brewers are trading Carlos Lee to the cubs anytime soon. Are they happy about the Dustin situation. I mean anyone can figure out that they are not thrilled. Backs are tricky. He probably did feel good, up until he started baseball activity. Jenks will be fine as far as his velocity. It takes hard throwers longer to get their velocity. He was dumb with the weights, weights are probably the worst thing he could of done. His flexibility is probably down a bit, meaning he will have to work harder to get loose. You take everything with a grain of salt. I'm not saying the site is 100% fact. But not all of it is 100% fiction either RE: Jenks. His velocity isn't the concern. It's his excess weight which could lead to him injuring other parts of his body because of his being in poor shape.
  20. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 12:27 PM) I can see where they would have problems with Jenks, but they knew the story with Hermanson. They knew he hadn't thrown a pitch, and as Herm Schneider says, his back is fine except for the pain when he twists it pitching. I believe one article said if Hermanson were at any other position than pitcher, he would be able to play. I really find it hard to believe they would be pissed at him when last season he was talking about retirement, and when he came to camp he had not thrown 1 pitch all winter. In fact at the end of January at Soxfest someone asked KW about Thome's back. He said it wasn't an issue, that there were a couple of other backs he was way more concerned with. I guarantee one of those was Hermanson's. Besides, what reliever was available a week or 2 into spring training that isn't available now? IIRC there wasn't any retirement talk coming from Dustin last season. It was only brought up this spring [and Dustin denied uttering those words, or implying it]. The media likely asked about it and ran with it No one knows what kind of deals were or are still out there for bullpen guys. But with closers such as Todd Jones and Benitez from SF starting the yr on the DL, it would cost a lot of talent to land any help now.
  21. I don't buy the argument that the sox have to deal one of their SP's now. The sox know their pitching is what will keep them contending every year. A more likely scenario is dealing a top prospect [Josh Fields, Owens] with a non-contending team [one of the perennial cellar dwellars] for a reliever. Though it won't net a top reliever, it could be a very solid vet. Though closer to the deadline, it probably could get a better pitcher. If the sox wanted to add a top flight bullpen guy, a guy like Crede or Dye would have to go. I don't see that either. They may have to dip into the farm system to fill the Dustin void. But waiting until the deadline is probably the best bet.
  22. According to MLB trade rumors, the sox are none too happy with Jenks and Dustin. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/04/sox_brass_displ.html Makes a lot of sense. Dustin tells the sox he's ready to go, and KW doesn't make a move [which is unlike him not to fill a need]. If the sox knew Hermanson wasn't ready to go, they'd have made some kind of a deal as a backup plan. We already knew about Jenks and his weight--though how much is related to his lifting and how much just being overweight and out of shape. Why pro athletes would still be out of shape in this day and age is beyond me. They can afford a damn treadmill at least
  23. It would be a nice deal for the Brewers. They are definitely a team to watch.
  24. QUOTE(beautox @ Mar 31, 2006 -> 08:37 PM) First off im more of a lerker here and just recently signed up so hello to everyone on the board. Secondly i agree 100% with you i think people are getting a little two worried about Jenks and our bullpen in general. Yesterday Jenks looked good he was'nt at 100% but he looked solid, he was working in a few cut fastballs and he brought the 12-6 hook and his velocity was up. He also struck out two, if our farm hand Valido had'nt droped the ball, Jenks would've been out of the inning and not blown the save. With regards to Matt Thorton since Coop has truly had time to work with him he looks much more fluid i believe that was his third scoreless appearnce; hes always had a good arm. Yesterday he came into a bases loaded situation and got out of it and looked good doing it. He also struck out Todd Helton and made him look silly in doing so. Anyways thats just my .02 cents. Go Sox! Welcome aboard . The biggest thing coming out of spring training is health. So far, only Hermanson is ailing. If Jenks was throwing 90 mph, with pain and soreness, then I'd be worried. Jenks nor anybody else are throwing with pain. Health is the key and so far so good
  25. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 31, 2006 -> 04:46 PM) Not a soul would have complained if we would have just replaced them with legit major league pitchers. Also, I think that the crapiness that has been Bobby Jenks so far is showing how uncertain our bullpen is. If Jenks is throwing like this at the start of May, then it might be time to worry about a replacement. But I think 29 other teams would take the "crappy" Bobby Jenks and his 300K salary in a heart beat.
