Sox Acquire Carlos Quentin for Chris Carter; DFA Heath Phillips
29andPoplar replied to SoxFan1's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Why would he acquire him as a platoon guy? I am actually a little gun shy to post stats because my experience is that people like to twist the stats around. But anyways, in 2007 Quentin was awful vs. lefthanders. Yes it was an odd year for him due to injury. But why would they acquire a potentially high impact guy and tell him he's going to platoon? To get Jerry Owens in the lineup? That doesn't make sense to me and I don't think they like Owens all that much. My guess is, they are far from done and this whole picture will clear up by end of January. -

I like this move too, the Sox thought they had this guy at least once last year. Kenny likes those Stanford guys. Sox are far from done, they have more to do and KW knows it. By the way they signed a utility IF too, minor league FA Mike Rouse, who filled in at SS, 2B, 3B for the Tribe last year. -
Agreed and I believe one of the posters here has a quote in his signature from Guillen where he comments on this issue. Guillen said something like, it's not about the speed of a leadoff guy, it's his ability to get on base.

Boras client for what it's worth.

I'm not qualified to answer the question but it's a good one. Obviously he has some skills. I also agree with the other poster who said why not drop Andy Gonzalez who appears clearly overmatched at the major league level, and put this guy on the 40 instead. No one knows if Hernandez can survive at the MLB level or not but he's had minor league success. All I know is their reasoning. On the surface I don't agree with it and it appears most here don't either. Then again, I'm not a scout nor do I know anythng about any other factors which may have entered into it. My hope is, they add better players to take up 40 man spots, guys who are clearly better than either this Hernandez guy or Andy Gonzalez or several others.

They did touch upon Rowand and Hahn answered in a general way, which is his forte. He basically said they are looking hard to upgrade the OF.
-
In other news, Rick Hahn was on the Score a few hrs. ago with Mulligan and Hanley. Among his thoughts: - happy they got O. Cabrera and Linbrink, both were targeted. - foresees another addition to the bullpen, they are focusing more on strikethrowers vs. the Sisco types - not shocked to miss out on Hunter but surprised he went to LAA - when asked specifically about Fukudome, says he didn't want to converse about specific names but stated they have done a lot of scouting in the Far East - they are looking hard to upgrade the OF - optimistic something will happen this week but there are ebbs and flows of these meetings, optimism turns to pessimism and back to optimism again - Anderson has been rehabbing from a sternum injury which he picked up rehabbing the wrist. They will know in a week or so whether he'll go to winter ball. Sox want him to, Anderson also wants to go. - By all accounts Crede is progressing nicely in his rehab
-
Interesting. Rays were said to be looking at Izturis and it prob. means the Pirates hang onto J. Wilson, at least for now.

Post to whomever you want, whatever entertains you I guess. Agree on Brian Anderson especially but that's another topic for another day and it's been covered wall to wall.

GM says Sox have options (Chicago Sports.com article)

Interesting thoughts. Chatter in Bridgeport is Sox mgmt. and Landis are talking (agent). Of course, chatter in Bridgeport and $3.50 nets a gallon of gas at 31st and Halsted. -
Fine by me, although I am not entirely sure what this means so if you could PM me I would appreciate it. Posts 13 and 14 got it rolling and I found it interesting there was no response to post 20. Further let it be noted I have asked more than once for the poster in question to seek other posters to converse with, as I suspect there are hard feelings about me asking the poster in question to refrain from swearing in responses to me. Those requests have gone unheeded as can plainly be seen.

His strikeout levels have declined from several years ago as I stated. He used to be a strikeout per inning guy, he's not now, it has declined. A decline is a decline. Nothing implied. I guess I should have just said I don't think Riske is much good, emphasized it was my OPINION, and left it at that. Certain posters like to camp out on stats and pick arguments. Others have amplified the general point very well.
-
Others have amplified my points on Riske so no need to rehash that. However, all your explanations and huff-and-puff blowhard defenses bear out what you show on this website every day ... you've got a bad case of Angry Little Man syndrome. So, Angry Little Man, you might want to chat it up with some college girls to solve that obvious frustration problem of yours. After they inevitably shoot you down, you're on your own. Sucks to be you.
-
You said it a lot better than I did. Well stated. Maybe I should just copy your posts on certain subjects for clarity's sake.
-
I guess I have to explain this again, the know it all profane college kid doesn't comprehend. I said he had a declining K rate and, follow me closely now because I'm not sure you have the ability to understand this ... He used to be over a strikeout per inning guy and he's not any more. Get it? Apparantly you don't. Please go talk to a college girl or two instead of hanging around on message boards, it might ease your obvious frustration or whatever's bugging you, nit picker. You picked out the last three years, I looked at his entire career. Now, as I've asked you more than once, if you insist on following me around picking arguments, go talk to another poster. It's not my fault a mod got on your back about your profanity and the tone of your responses and you've got an angry pill stuck in your throat.

Looking back on it, Cowley's article was spot on. Hunter confirms the White Sox made a very strong pitch and he was leaning this way. Cowley said it looked good for a deal with the Sox unless some team came in last minute and blew the offer away. Enter LAA. -
Actually I have the same question. Lots of times they put guy in the Fall league to see how they measure up against other guys in the system or to see how they do against good competition. The stats say Hernandez did very well so it's baffling. The only thing I can figure is stats in the AFL don't tell the whole story. Not much else to say other than we will see if they're right or not. If someone picks him next week, he will have to keep it up and stay the whole season on their roster. The Sox don't think he will match up well vs. major league hitters, they've been wrong before, maybe this is one of those times, who knows.
-
He used to strike out more than one guy per inning, he doesn't any more. Good enough for you? Great. Isn't good enough for you? Go find another poster to talk to. Apologies to the mods in advance but this guy has a habit of doing exactly what he's doing in this thread, picking at stuff that was clearly stated as an opinion. Out of frustration or something I guess.
-
That's one way to look at it, your way I suppose. I prefer to look at it for what it is, they are Armstrong and Hernandez. It comes down to the talent evaluation and if it's correct.

29andPoplar replied to TheBigHurt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Ok, great. And what does that have to do with it being November vs. April? Does anyone remember all their proclamations from around the time Buehrle re-signed? After just about everyone here was sure he wouldn't? -
Let's see ... he pitched in KC last year. No pressure, he did well. 2006, he pitched in Chicago and Boston. Pressure. Not so great, I would even say bad. Now that's just my opinion, so you can throw all the stats around you wish. He didn't get the job done, the job they acquired him to do. Too many implosions. Good year / bad year in my assesment. His declining K numbers send up a red flag to me, in my opinion. He used to be a pretty good strikeout pitcher, he isn't any more. He is not the guy I would give a big long term contract to, in my opinion he isn't worth it. I hope I have made it clear this is all my opinion. As for your first paragraph, I have no idea if you watched or not. I know I did, and that is how I formed my opinion, that's all.

Yes I suppose you're right. It's all for show. Just like the re-signing of Buehrle. Again ... it is best to wait and see. -
Did you watch him pitch for the White Sox, did you see how unreliable he was? Maybe you didn't. He is not the guy I would ever give a long term big money contract to, he tends to choke under pressure in my opinion.
-
The reason is they think Armstrong is a strong catch and throw guy who took a big step up this year, they feel he can handle a pitching staff and might make a good back up catcher. As for F. Hernandez, he tops out high 80's without a real plus pitch and the White Sox don't think he'll last long in the majors, if in fact he makes it. Especially the American League. We'll see if they're right or not.

Where did you get that the no trade is for the duration? Or are you just assuming? Dotel wants to close, that won't happen here. Riske ... good year / bad year.
