  1. QUOTE (MAX @ Oct 30, 2011 -> 01:41 PM)
    I really believe that AJ is worth much more than people around here seem to think in trade. He might be type A next year too. 6 mil isn't really that much money for a year.

    I also find it hilarious that he has the same numerical ranking as joe mauer.

    In order to get get compensation for a Type A free agent you need to offer AJ arbitration. There is no way the Sox going to offer him at 6 million a year at the Age of 37 in 2012. No chance we get compensation so the best hope is an injury happens to another club during spring training or the season.

  2.

    We orginally traded for Edwin Jackson and his high contract 8.35 million for Daniel Hudson and Dave Holmberg who might be a Top 10 lefty prospect in all of the minors. Then we trade Edwin Jackson and Teahen for Zach Stewart and saving close to 9.5 million. That trade was horrible when we could of had Hudson/16 wins this year for 6 years before becoming a free agent and we threw in our Top pitching prospect even though he was in rookie ball. Pathetic job by Kenny Williams.

  3. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 29, 2011 -> 10:52 AM)
    There's no real way to prove that they wouldn't have won without him just as well. The point is, to say the Cardinals "won" in the trade simply because they "won the series" is just cause-and-effect bulls*** that cannot be proven. The Sox didn't lose in that trade, regardless. The Sox weren't going to win the WS (let alone the division) with EJ and Tehen anyway, so getting rid of both and getting anything in return, as far as I'm concerned, is a win for the White Sox in that trade. So in saying the Cards won in that trade and the Sox lost is simply disingenuous.

    To say otherwise is just baseball dumb.

    Sox lost the trade when they decided to trade Daniel Hudson and Dave Holmberg for Edwin Jackson. Still shaking my head on that one.

  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 20, 2011 -> 05:22 PM)
    And Mitchell and Thompson can still turn it around. If they start getting near their potential that is two really good OF prospects that come on to the scene.

    Josh Phegley just tore his ACL getting prepared for AFL. That's why Michael Blank took over his spot. Phegley is bascially done with our organiztion because the huge liability on him is his defense. You can't have 2 horrible defenders behind the plate with him and Flowers.

  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 20, 2011 -> 08:14 AM)
    After we trade TCQ, Danks/Floyd and Thornton? Yeah probably. Plus the numbres 3 and 5 prospects from FLA we already got for Ozzie.

    By the way, Kalapse brought up the idea that we should try to find a system we feel is worse and make a comparison. I can't honestly say I know a lot of other systems in any depth, but when we were trading Ozzie, I did look at multiple analyses of the Marlins' system. And I am pretty convinced the Sox system is at least better than that one. Just looking at quality level at various points in multiple prospect lists, random sampling of players, the Sox system looks better to me.

    And I totally agree with those talking about the spending problem. That is the biggest issue, is being so unwilling to properly invest in the draft and in the international market.

    One other thing to think about... evaluating drafts is a little like evaluating the President. It takes a few years after, to really know how it went. Example? In 2008 and 2009, the Sox system was similarly derided as being one of the worst in baseball. But the following players entered the Sox system (draft, trade or NDFA) in 2008:

    Gordon Beckham (drafted, MLB starter)

    Brent Morel (drafted, MLB starter)

    Dan Hudson (drafted, MLB starter)

    Charlie Leesman (drafted, talked about as being on the cusp of MLB)

    Tyler Kuhn (drafted, possible Sox utility man in 2012)

    Brandon Short (drafted, Playing AFL, borderline MLB talent)

    Terry Doyle (drafted, playing AFL, getting attention)

    Tyler Flowers (via trade)

    Brent Lillibridge (via trade)

    Dan Remenowsky (NDFA pickup, now on the cusp)

    That's pretty impressive for one org in one year, at three years later. Three guys starting in the majors, two more playing in the majors, and a handful of other guys who have a good shot to make it. And I don't think it was recognized just how impressive it was, until at least 2010.

    Now if the Sox can just invest in the system a little more, it seems like maybe the org has the right development staff in place down there.

    I find it comical you mention all those names: The only player that is a worthy player on a playoff contention team that was drafted was Daniel Hudson and we traded him away when he had 6 years of service time before becoming a free agent. The White Sox will never be a playoff team with players in your lineup such as Morel, Beckham, Axelrod, Short, and Flowers unless your using them as a backup. Our development of Beckham is a prime example of how we ruined this player. Look at what his swing has turned into the last 2 years.

  6. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 12, 2011 -> 11:33 AM)
    Is there much of a difference between batting Dunn or Rios cleanup? No, not really, but there's still a slightly better chance with one. With the future outlook of this team being quite grim, you have to take every little advantage you can.

    Mitchell and Poreda weren't considered reaches. We picked both of them right at the area they should of have been selected.

  7. QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 11:13 PM)
    Focus on the Sox all you want, but that's not the number that stands out to me. $236 million sounds like a broken system to me.

    Take advantage of the broken system. Us being a major market team it's sad that we are the last team in spending towards the draft and international front almost every year. New York Mets used to be just like us, but they finally woke up this year and changed their draft philosophy with their new GM. That's why you are seeing so many of the small market teams wising up the last couple years by investing $10-15 million in the draft each year. Pittsburgh, KC, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Cleveland, and Seattle are building their farm systems the right way and already our benefiting on their big league club which will save hundreds of millions of dollars those first 6 years before they become free agent. Chisenhall, Kipnis, Hosmer, Moustakas, Duffy, Crow, Alvarez, McCutchen, Jennings, Price, Pineda, Ackley and the list goes on and on. I know a bunch of those players are Boras players and high first round draft picks and that brings up another fact that the White Sox will never consider drafting a Scott Boras player because we are too cheap with farm development to get involved in that situation.

  8. And yet again-White Sox spend the least amount of money in the draft this year. I know you didn't have a first round pick, so allocate that money to be used for tough signings and on the international front which we never do. What surprised me this year is that they went over MLB slot recommendations on 5 draft picks, but it wasn't a huge substantial amount. Also, we went below the slot recommendations on 5 of our draft picks including our 4th round draft pick which looks like to be a wasted pick on an injured reliever. Come on Jerry and Kenny change your philosophy on the farm system.

  9. When is Kenny Williams going to change his philosophy that it's smarter to develop your own players financially. Dunn, Rios, Teahen, Pierre, Peavy, Pena, etc. are examples wasting away money through trades, free agents, and waiver pick ups. Why not put $5-8 million towards the draft and international signings it will save you ten's of millions of dollars in the long run.

  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 04:53 PM)
    Then you lump that in with Peavy, Humber (lack of workload again) and even Stewart, who was a reliever/closer not so long ago in the Reds' system. There's just so many things that can go wrong with a rotation that would be incredibly iffy to begin with ... assuming the departures of Buehrle and Danks.

    Stewart IP

    2008-80

    2009-105

    2010-136

    2011-117 so far

    Looks like he'll finish at in the 150-170 range if she stays in the Sox rotation.

    Maybe they can get away with his as the fifth starter. Time will tell.

    The proper way to handling a young pitcher is gradually go up around 30 innings each year anything more your taking a huge risk. Look how Matt Latos is doing this year with the Padres. They abused him last year. If Stewart pitches 160-170 innings this year. Then he should be good for 190-200 innings for our 5th starter and that would work, but I think Kenny is counting on him to be more than a 5th starter.

  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 02:13 PM)
    Last year counts as Junior College?

    This kid put 140 innings on his arm 2 years in a row in college and held together. It's crazy not to give him a chance to start.

    Counting on Sale for throwing 140-150 innings as a starting pitcher would be a mistake. Sale will need plenty of time at least 2 years to build up his arm strength to pitch 180-200 innings in a season.

    #CalStateFullerton will have one less arm next season. Pitcher Chris Devenski, a 25th-rdr to the #WhiteSox, has signed. #mlbdraft #MLB

    Does this signing so close to deadline mean the White Sox went over the slot recommendation?

  14. QUOTE (beck72 @ Aug 7, 2011 -> 07:44 AM)
    Mark has more value-on the field and in the clubhouse-for the sox than for other teams. Something should be done, along the lines of a PK contract. While he might be a nice addition for another team, his leaving would be a greater loss.

    The 6 man rotation has worked well for MB. Without it, his off-speed stuff and location would probably take a big hit. So would his ERA and effectiveness. This is something the sox should stick with for 2012, with Peavy and Humber needing that extra rest as well.

    I don't think having Paulie and Mark is helping in the clubhouse because its already pathetic with the man running the dugout. Ozzie has lost his team. I never seen so many players give up and show no energy and enthusiasm night in and night out. Time for a new manager to run the show. Ozzie has lost this team a long time ago when he let his idiot son's start bad mouthing his players with insider information.

  15. QUOTE (OilCan @ Aug 6, 2011 -> 11:03 PM)
    I know it's Low A ball, but...

    Dan Black...81 RBIs. Not too shabby. And that batting average is increasing. Might be ready for High A W/S.

    Dan Black is already 24 years old. He should be tearing up in Low A Ball. What stunted his development was trying him at catcher which wasn't successful. They need to move him up. Not consider a prospect at that age in Low A Ball.

  16. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 07:14 PM)
    Matzek is a complete and utter mess. Go look at his numbers. It shocked the hell out of me when I saw them earlier this season.

    Matzek mechanics are out of whack-walking everybody and only throwing 88-90mph. Value has gone way done
