I have been worried about Gonzalez early. I will say he looked better today. Made a fantastic play in the field that the runner barely beat. Had a double in the gap robbed, walked and got two hits.  Only on his foul pop to left did he have the big loop in his swing that has really concerned me.  There’s still no way he’s a top 4 guy in the system, but tonight was pretty good.

I’m more concerned to see how he looks after instructs and on the backfields in the spring. Hopefully he’ll get comfortable with this new swing over the winter.

Regarding the Rankings, I’d go Colson/Schultz/Quero/Ramos/Eder/Gonzalez. I think there’s an argument to have Mena above Gonzalez.

How has he looked in the field overall? I think his long term home will be at 3B.

I get that we're used to making this judgement after seeing guys struggle, but turning it the other way - when you have a 24 year old who hits 24 HR in 404 plate appearances between AA and AAA, has a 10.6% walk rate that year, an .896 OPS, goes 24/30 on stolen bases, and you can't turn this guy into a big league utility player so you wind up signing someone else who has no business on a major league roster for several million dollars, (most recent example: Elvis Andrus), then you're also failing to do what is needed to build a sustained winner.

You’re absolutely right. The Sox PD at the ML level has failed him but this year he had 97 PA’s, he struck out 36 times and walked only twice. In 2022, he had 109 PA’s, he struck out 39 and walked twice. OPS+ of 72 and 56. He’s not good.

Romy is the kind of player that the Sox need to rid themselves of in that he can’t get on base and he has zero approach at the plate.

There’s better end of bench guys out there. I mean Zach Remillard is much, much better than Romy and is the perfect end of bench guy.

My thoughts exactly. They'd have to publicly "wear it" that this was a terrible hire. The firing would be as much an indictment of Hahn/KW as it would be for Grifol. They also likely know they'll be 500 at best next season, so there's little risk in going into 2024 with a lame duck manager.

A .500 record is very unlikely in my opinion. What quality free agents would sign here? Guys talk and the word around the league is that the Sox are a compete dumpster fire with a bad clubhouse culture, an idiot for a manager and a FO who doesn’t communicate at all.

They need to clean house, fire the coaching staff (I’d keep Katz) and use next year as a rebuilding season.

If you want to be even more sad about the 2023 pick of the Sox, go look at the 4 guts picked directly after Jacob Gonzalez and how they are doing...DEFINITELY small sample size, but one of these things does not look like the others.

    Jacob Gonzalez:

None of those have under gone a significant swing change like Gonzalez has. If you’re looking for something to be excited about regarding Gonzalez, he has 8 k’s to 7 bb’s. He’s under going a massive swing chance and he’s not striking out, that’s impressive.

  5. It was amazing to see Pedro up against Craig Counsell, who’s one of the top 5 managers in the game imo. He couldn’t light a candle to Counsell and managed the team out of at least one, maybe two wins this series.

  6. If the Sox are indeed preparing to go through another multi year rebuild, they should explore taking on bad contracts as long as they can get some serious prospects coming back to them. It’s something they should’ve did during the last rebuild but didn’t do, maybe JR is opposed to doing it.

If I were the Sox I’d ask Detroit how much money do I have to eat of this contract to get Jackson Jobe.

Ethan Katz is absolutely one of them, this pitching staff has made very little positive progress this year and wasted a whole lot of resources. Plus, the pitching staff has been repeatedly put in positions to fail or get hurt (Crochet, Hendrix, Martin). The good news is he’s likely to be the fall guy to protect Hahn and Grifol this year.

    Totally disagree with this.

The Sox pitching and pitching development at the ML level has been the line bright spot of the season.

  8. This is from Eric Cross, formerly of Fantrax:

“After the first game of a doubleheader on May 3rd, Greene was slashing .232/.292/.324 with a 31.7% strikeout rate and only four extra-base hits in 120 plate appearances. But since then, Greene has slashed .367/.433/.565 with 12 doubles, five home runs, and four steals in 164 plate appearances while dropping his strikeout rate to a more manageable 26.2%. For the season, Greene has improved his Quality of Contact metrics across the board and currently sits with a 10.2% barrel rate, 94.8 mph AVG EV, and 48.6% hard-hit rate. He also has a 78th percentile sprint speed and 90th percentile xBA.”

But when you consider the remarks Grifol made when he got the job about fundamentals, accountability, ready to kick ass et al Middleton's comments tonight put him squarely in the cross hairs. Nothing has changed under his watch if those comments are accurate (and based on what I've seen and the on-field results I think they are)

This, this right here is exactly right.

You would think a manager would covet the opportunity to be able to come in and clean up a culture and instill a new one but Grifol has proven to be incapable of that.

The Sox need to cut bait, he’s awful in game. He doesn’t optimize the roster and he’s allowed for the culture to somehow get worse under his watch. Don’t even get home started on him salivating over Sal Perez. The dude is a clown.

    Agreed.

With that being said prior to his health scare he was one of better Hahns signings.

That’s true. It was a good signing but if they signed a superstar it would look a whole lot better.

  11. Does Pedro do anything good? Are there examples of him optimizing the roster?

In the extremely unlikely chance that there’s a FO change, whoever is in charge will hopefully be allowed to change managers but I understand if they wanted to see Pedro can do in 2024 before finding a new manager in 25

  12. This should be a lesson that you don’t spend big money on RP. Unless you’re truly a CL/RP away from a title, it’s one of the worst uses of resources. The Sox were spending what like $35M+ on RP’s entering the season, that’s crazy.

Well my original point was that tanking and rebuilding will never work as long as JR is the owner and Hahn/KW are still here. Your post shows that repeating the process again isn't going to work as JR is still the owner last time I checked. The only way forward is to try to create 2005 again around a base of Cease and Robert.

I think it can work. Tampa has made it to the World Series multiple times since 2005. There’s smart execs out there who could make it work, Hahn and KW aren’t those guys but I agree having Jerry as the owner makes it more difficult

2023 was the tail end of a failed rebuild. Burning it down again isn't going to work. The last 6 years are evidence and proof of that.

I say let's not trade Cease and Robert, cut some dead weight like Grandal and Lynn, sign some veterans, and go to war in 2024.

Rebuilding isn’t why the team is where they are. They are where they are because they failed to commit to the process. They didn’t sign a superstar when they had the opportunity to do so. Ownership didnt let the FO hire their manager and forced his friend in them. When they had high draft picks they took college DHs and a singles hitter, instead of guys who play premium positions. Instead of Madrigal and Vaughn, the Sox could’ve had Jared Kelenic in 2018, or Riley Greene, CJ Abrams, or Alek Manoah in 2019. They failed because they made bad decisions after they decided to rebuild.

Based on Bob's tweets about the Sox intending to compete in 2024, I only expect Lynn and Kelly to go at this point with him stating they are looking to compete in 2024.

I guess Clevinger is a remote possibility, though between his past and injury, I think the Sox have to eat that deal. Grandal and Elvis are the last two 2024 FAs.

The Five 2025 Free Agents / Buyout Eligible Players:

    • Anderson (2024 $14M or unlikely $1M Buyout)
    • Moncada (2024 $24M + 2025 $5M Buyout)
    • Eloy (2024 $13M + 2025 $3M and 2026 $3M Buyouts or club options)
    • Graveman (2024 $8M)
    • Bummer (2024 $5.5M, 2025 & 2026 $1.25M Club Option buyouts ($7.25M 2025 / $7.5M 2026)

Everyone who’s on an expiring deal this season should be dealt. Not doing so is malpractice.
