November 24, 20169 yr What are the Sox plans for this guy? Coats certainly put up the right numbers at Charlotte last season. .330/.394/.519/.912. Those are better numbers that the outfield prospects we are looking at put up. Yes, roughly half a season at Charlotte. Still, Coats has hit well at every stop in minors. Plus he can play defense and run a little bit. If Melky goes to DH and Avi goes away, there should be a spot for him in 2017. Hope we don't trade him without giving him a real opportunity.
November 24, 20169 yr I think he's most likely a good AAAA player, but I agree he should see a decent amount of AB's in a rebuilding year just to see if he can stick.
November 24, 20169 yr QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 24, 2016 -> 07:56 AM) Hope we don't trade him without giving him a real opportunity. Agree Rick Hahn has dispatched a lot of second tier ML ready prospects in his few years at the helm.
November 24, 20169 yr Coats is definitely a guy you consider giving an everyday role to in a rebuilding year. Obviously you got to see who is traded and who we get back in return, but Coats has enough of a prospect pedigree to get an extended look. I don't really see him ending up as a regular, but stranger things have happened.
November 24, 20169 yr My guess is that Coats loses his position to a real OF prospect that we bring back in the future Sale deal. I am plenty OK with that, as I think the guy is a 4th OF at best.
November 24, 20169 yr if the plan is to rebuild, fine with using him as 4th outfielder, platoon guy, pinch hitter. from what I saw from him, he doesn't have any plus tools. not much power. Not much speed. So-so arm. OK fielder. He has hit for average. His best quality is he's cheap.
