This is really the only reason to do it 1 for 1. With Arenado openly saying he is sick of losing, I can't see him agreeing to any sort of extension. If the Sox have any intent to pursue him after 2019, they better have a somewhat competitive-looking team by then. 

This is why the idea is so fantastical. Arenado clearly wants to win and there's zero reason to think Arenado would want to sign an extension with a team 30 games under .500. Not to mention sign one year before free agency which would present plenty of potential contenders for him to choose from.
