White Sox went up 3 games over the Tigers, with just 16 left to play.  Detroit 77-69 at that juncture.

Tigers would finish 11-5 down the stretch and wind up at 88-74, going on to eventually face the Giants in the World Series and getting swept away…

White Sox would go on to finish 5-11 and an 85-77 final record.

Young and hungry/overachieving White Sox team in Ventura’s first year against the heavily favored, veteran-led Tigers’ team that coasted through most of that late summer.  Pretty sure we used 12-13 rookies total that year, mostly pitchers led by Sale and a rookie in Quintana.

Of course this season, the Twins and White Sox face off in 6 of the final 9 games of the season, on the road and at GRF the final 3.

White Sox at San Diego middle three of those final 9 games, Twins at Detroit for their 3.

If Ventura and Bevington are the two worst modern Sox managers, shouldn't LaRussa be at least fairly comparable?

“Mark Potash, an outstanding veteran writer for the Sun-Times, has tweeted out the Braves record from 2021 over the past week when I post the White Sox current numbers, and they are in a remarkably similar position. The Braves were 47-49, in third place and five games out of first, before closing on a 41-24 run to win the National League East by 6 1/2 games and then going on to win the World Series. The next 19 games for the White Sox feature two in Colorado, three at home vs. Oakland, three at home vs. Kansas City, four in Texas, four in Kansas City and three at home vs. Detroit before Houston visits.

All 19 are against teams with records below .500. So maybe more will be known about this team as of Aug. 19, although that line has been uttered as much as, "Is this the win that will turn things around?" during this perplexing season. The White Sox have nine games vs. the Twins in September, including six of the last nine on the schedule. So, this division seems to be moving toward a remarkable final week.”

We've seen that script before going back to Manuel.  Usually August was when reality set in.

This version of La Russa is unquestionably worse than Ventura.

Yeah, that 2003 season was a gut punch.  The Jose Panigua game and the downfall of Esteban Loiaza during the last 6-8 weeks.
