White Sox Holes

Featured Replies

Every team seems to have holes in their team except for the Yankees, who lost the World Series. But no team will have more holes than the White Sox, who have 10 free agents out there and available to all the other major league ball clubs.

The White Sox Free Agents are:

-Tony Graffanino

-Carl Everett

-Frank Thomas (Mutual Option)

-Roberto Alomar

-Sandy Alomar Jr.

-Bartolo Colon

-Scott Sullivan

-Esteban Loaiza

-Tom "Flash" Gordon

-Jose Valentin

Knowing the free agents, the question is what wholes need to be addressed.

For starters:

1st base-Paul Konerko. This guy is not going to cut it. He has over average fielding but so do other first basemen in the MLB. The past two dismal seasons have been s*** in my opinion, and I feel there is a need for an upgrade.

Beastly's upgrade for '04: Scott Spezio, 1b Anaheim Angels.

How the move will work: Trade Konerko to the O's for Jason Johnson, and minor leaguers.

2nd base-Roberto Alomar. Alomar, who was acquired by the White Sox in early July, seemed to carry this team since acquired. I thought he could play a few more years with a diminished salary for this team, which would give Willie Harris, Aaron Miles and Jorge Nunez some much needed time for seasoning.

Beastly's Verdict for '04: Roberto Alomar

How the move will work: For him to catch the veteran's cold to cut his salary by 50 percent. The Sox would only pay about 3-4 million per year, which is not bad for a cheap organization.

Shortstop-Jose Valentin. Valentin, who also was acquired by the White Sox in trade before the 2000 season along with Cal Eldred had been a fan favorite before 2003. It seemed as though people hate him now, but talk is that he will return to the Pale Hose for a reduced salary. The guy banged out twenty nine homeruns in '03, yet his average went down at least twenty points from the previous year.

Beastly's take for '04: Jose Valentin

How this will work: 50 percent paycut.

Pitcher-Colon's replacement-a lesser Free Agent if we cannot re-sign Colon...and our bullpen we can always add too with Adkins and Hawkins from Minnesota

All I can say White Sox fans that this offseason will be interesting.

I do agree. And also Robbie did not carry this team after he was aquired, just to let you know.

Fine, he "helped carry the team" you do know that I said IMO...

Beastly, since I'm taking a break from studying, I feel it necessary to give you an education.

For starters, your comments on Konerko. Yes, his 2003 season was horrid. However, in 2002, he was an all-star. Therefore, his past two seasons have not been s*** as you have called them.

Second, if Alomar carried the team, he didn't do a good job of it. We failed to make the playoffs if that tells you anything.

Third, how do we have a hole at catcher? I think Olivo did a fine job this past season and will only get better. And if we were going to get a new catcher, it wouldn't be Jamie Burke.

This is a polite critique of your post.

Yes sir! Did I ever tell you that you look like Mark Buehrle in that picture?

I'm pleased with Olivo. If we can get someone of value for him though, and KW signed I-Rod from Florida (he's a free agent too) I'd be all about it.

There's just something not right with Konerko. I like the guy, always have... but it doesn't seem like "just" a fluke year.

We have holes at 2B, SS, CF, RHP (relief), and a hole in our 5th starter slot. That's my opinion.

We definitely need an upgrade at the keystone positions. As much as I've liked Jose Valentin, I feel like his time has passed him by. Robbie Alomar solidified our infield defense immensely, but I know his time is passed.

As for CF, I feel like one of Rowand, Harris, Reed or Borchard will be able to hold down the position and effectively produce while doing so. I think that guy will be Rowand.

If the Sox can resign Sullivan, I think Koch, Sully and Wright would do a decent job as righties out of the pen. However, Wright might end up as our 5th starter. In that case, we'd proabaly see Rauch in the pen.

We've got Shoney, Wright, Rauch, Stewart, Cotts and others that could conceivably nail down that 5th starter slot. Let's hope one of them can do it effectively.
