Robbie Alomar

I understand the NY radio station has reported the deal that he's signing w/ AZ....I'll post anything official if I find it.

I guess that'd make sense, they dealt Junior Spivey to Milwaukee in the Sexson deal.

Good luck to him, I liked him in his short stint with us.

Spivey was still gonna be shopped around last time I heard. Could be a guy to go afta if we ship out sum payroll. Good situation for Alomar in Arizona, a chance to win now.

Arizona close to signing veteran second baseman

By BOB BAUM

.c The Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks are close to signing 12-time All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar, a team source said Monday night.

The source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said a deal could come as soon as Tuesday.

Alomar, 35, has been working out in the Phoenix area for several weeks. Signing Alomar would cement an infield that includes Shea Hillenbrand at third, newly acquired Richie Sexson at first and Alex Cintron at shortstop.

The addition of Alomar would free Matt Kata - a rookie last season - to move into the utility role previously occupied by Craig Counsell, because Kata can play second, shortstop or third.

Alomar, entering his 17th big-league season, became a free agent when the Chicago White Sox declined to offer him arbitration.

Alomar had a disappointing stint with the New York Mets before being traded to Chicago on July 1.

Alomar earned $8 million in the final year of his contract last season, but reportedly was willing to take less from the financially strapped Diamondbacks, despite more lucrative offers elsewhere.

After two sub-par seasons, he would come to Arizona motivated to return to the form that he showed through most of a career that could land him in the Hall of Fame.

Alomar came to New York in an eight-player trade with Cleveland after batting .336 with 20 home runs and 100 RBIs for the Indians in 2001.

A 10-time Gold Glove winner, he hit just .266 in 2002, matching a career-low he set in his rookie season in 1988. Alomar was batting just .262 when the trade to Chicago was made, and batted .253 for the White Sox.

Alomar began his major league career in San Diego, then played for Toronto, Baltimore, Cleveland, the Mets and the White Sox.

He would be the second significant acquisition by the Diamondbacks, who earlier sent Counsell, Junior Spivey and four other players to Milwaukee for Sexson on Dec. 1.

I wonder how much they r offerin him. My guess is b/w 3 and 4 mill.

Sportscenter just mentioned a little blip about this happening during their minute of baseball.

This is a blip from the Trib.....

Alomar update: Roberto Alomar is said to be close to signing a one-year deal with Arizona. The second baseman and the Sox parted ways last month after the Sox lowered their one-year offer to $1 million plus $1 million deferred without interest.

They got him pretty cheap, I guess he wasn't getting any offers. That offer was 'disrespectful' when it was from the Sox....

That never says the Dbacks are only gonna pay him 1 million

He prob got offered a 2 year deal, but me thinks Karva will share sum playin time with him ova there.

:bang :bang   :D

Maybe we can trade for Robbie Alomar again at the trade deadline when Zona is out of it, and we are in the race

Good for Roberto. His fading bat will fit in with all the other stuff that lies dead in the desert heat.

Can't fault Robbie on this deal. If he signs with the D-Backs, or the Cards, he apparently has agreed to less money than he made in '03 from the Mets. He agreed to do the same with the Sox, but Reinsdorf is too cheap and wanted even less than fair market.

I wish we had kept Robbie but too many questions I guess about his declining hitting.

I wish him well.

He had to come down on his salary - I thought the comment in the quoted news article about other lucrative offers was pure fantasy - he'll sign for where he can and best wishes always

Anything is possible, but I am not sure we have the farm system left to do that?! ;)
