My mom has worked for them for about 26 years. She started there as a part time sales clerk just to make extra cash when I was 10. It helped since my dad was a sheet metal worker and was often laid off back in the late 70's early 80's. The job eventually turned into a career for her and she moved on to store manager and then district manager. She is 70 now and semi-retired. She still works part time again as a sales clerk at one of the stores, and even has my dad working a couple days as a porter to get him out of the house. It was always cool having her work at Fannie May, I still remember my days at Whitney Young High school when she was the manager at the store that is attached to the plant. I would always go over there at lunch time for samples. We always had Fannie May candy around the house, especially during the holidays. It amazes me that the company is struggling considering how popular the product has always been. When I would stop in and visit her at whatever store she worked in, it seemed they were always busy. I am going to miss having Fannie May candy around. It has kind of always been part of my life, and I have a major sweet-tooth.

Fanny May Turtles are my all time favorite. Whenever I get back home a Fanny May stop is always high on the list of things to do.

Mint meltaways are my aunt's, my brother's and my favorite. My mom's favorite are the butter creams.

That part really won't affect my mom much since she is basically retired, but I am not sure what that means for her profit sharing/pension. It would really suck to give 26 years to a company and wind up getting nothing after retirement. I am sure there are a lot of others in that same situation there also.

Still hard to beleive that someone could mismanage a company so popular and profitable for so long. The sad thing is the guys that made the mess probably got huge payoffs and just went on to other high paying jobs ruining another company.

Not good at all, the best candy I've ever had bar none.

 

That's the only reason my mom ever wants me to go to Chicago for Sox games, so I can bring her back some Fannie May.

I've already bought 10 packages of Meltaways. I've stuck them in the freezer, and I will enjoy them when I see the need.

 

However, I can't believe that Fannie May is gone. How sad. That candy is heavenly.

You thinking of DeMetts or something? Fanny May doesn't have turtles. They do have good pixies though.

I wouldn't be so quick to say it was mismanagement. It's hard to compete when you are paying your workers $8-$10 an hour minimum, and your competition (Brach's for example) is paying 10 pesos a day to their employees at their new Mexican manufacturing plant. Candy isn't nearly as popular year-round anymore, due to factors like more health-conscious diets, and the days of bringing boxes of candy and flowers on dates are long gone. It's sad, don't get me wrong, but it's entirely consistent with manufacturing trends in this country in general--outsource to foreign countries, and save millions.

trinidads were by far the best, i'll miss 'em.
