February 12, 200422 yr Seems to me that there are a lot more fights and brawls this season than in recent seasons past. I wonder why that is? As a fan of the rough stuff myself I certainly am not complaining.
February 12, 200422 yr I'd say on average it's actually about the same as in season's past or even down a little bit. Watching as many games as I do, a lot of guys are pretty hesitant to drop the gloves because of the instigator rule. Most times when big fights happen now it's from a cheap shot that the refs (both of them) miss that starts it and the players at that point take care of business.
February 12, 200422 yr Honestly I think they need to ditch the instigator rule, and allow the fighting to take care of business legimately, instead of through cheap shots. That way justice is fair instead of injuring people.

I really enjoy the playoffs, but I cannot really follow the regular season. I love to see the fighting. Especially when they are both bad asses. I am a very big fan of physical sports aswell.

Not just the fighting, but the checking, the shot blocking, and things like that are just awesome to watch.

February 12, 200422 yr I am not a fan of fighting. I used to kinda like it, but now it seems that it's a bit embarrassing for the sport. Hockey, when "played the right way" ( thanks, OZZIE! ) is the best sport around, IMO, and doesn't need the goonism. I'd much rather see a fast-paced game with a lot of scoring chances and CLEAN physical play than a scene out of SlapShot. That said, I realize that I'm clearly in the minority on this - if you ever see a picture of a hockey fight in the newspaper, check if you can see the crowd in the picture. There won't be ONE face that isn't smiling. It's the weirdest thing - lots of people complain about hockey fights, but everyone seems to like it when it's happening in front of them.
February 12, 200422 yr I don't mean to get into the "who I know" thing but, in this case, it's somewhat warranted. A certain NHL player I know personally, who is considered a "fighter", does his job in those regards not to be a "goon" - I have never seen him cheapshot anyone in his entire NHL career - but to send messages, be it to his teammates that he has their back in a very physical game, or to send a message to the other team that cheap crap won't be tolerated. But he also knows that he has a responsibility to be a hard hitter, physical, and be "clean" about things. There's 700 players in the NHL. And believe me, what goes around comes around. They don't want to be on the wrong side of the bus of this little fraternity known as the NHLPA. It's a fine line, but if the game is played within the boundaries that each guy understands, it's a part of the game and will continue to be so that the players and teams all balance each other out - yes, this is a "balancing out" in a situation that a team is less talented, it can be an equalizer.

Worrell ended up beating Low's ass, and Low wouldn't quit. Damn, I turned off the game too soon. Didn't see that fight, but I could tell something was brewing during the parts of the game I watched. I just thought it would have been Osgood VS his defender - that putz kicked in a goal for the Avs when it was going wide left.
February 13, 200422 yr Fan, Whatcha gonna do for six weeks while Radek Bonk recovers? and lol - they won without him last night...hope they can keep it up cuz my favorite blows so much that I am over-joyed when they tie - cuz that means they didn't lose (like last night - they tied the Caps...i think it was the Caps).

The point is every other major sport, except boxing, tosses players out for fighting. To me hockey is a freak show for allowing it. This week: Disney On Ice NHL Boxing on Ice The sport is too cool to resort to sideshow theatrics.

Also in no other major sport so the players carry potential weapons around with them everywhere they go. There is such a high probability for cheapshots that the players have to be able to police themselves. I dont know abuot you but I'd think twice about whacking someone with my stick is I knew some enforcer type was going to want to kick my ass on the next shift. The last thing hockey needs is to become an ice ballet. That would alienate the fan base even more than it has been already.
