April 19, 200422 yr A lot of talk around here has been about Magglio's contract situation, but not a lot has been mentioned about Esteban or Pauly, who both become FA's after the season. Now I have no clue as to what Estey will be seeking, but you've gotta figure if the guy pitches well all season, he's going to be seeking around 7 million per or more. It's hard to consider what Konerko is going to be seeking as this season will have a lot to do with what his value on the market will be. We have Konerko, Magglio, Koch and Loaiza all coming off the books this winter. No way we resign Koch, unless it's a deal where he's making 1 mil per year or less. And I'm sure with his track record before 2003 that someone will pony up more than that with the belief that they can fix his problems. Here's where the trickiness of the situation lies. If Magglio is signed to a deal, where does that leave Loaiza and Konerko? Let's say Konerko has a great season, as does Loaiza...Are the Sox better off taking two solid players and going with a young outfielder such as Reed next season or losing perhaps their best pitcher and a fan favorite and run producer in Konerko in order to keep their cornerstone in Mags? This is a situation I think will yield some interesting discussion, so have at it.

Disagree, especially since he's been returning to his pre-2002 all star game form! Absolutely NOTHING is stopping him right now...He's comfortable in all ways out there. Heck, he even went opposite-field yesterday!!! I have fully eaten my foot in regards to what I said about him during the offseason...I'm glad they didn't pull the trigger for Perez now. Paulie's proving all of us wrong!

It wouldn't be much of a stretch to see Lee converted to 1B and one of the kids in the OF, while using the Konerko and Koch money to get other positional and pitching needs filled.

If nothing happens, dump the salary AFTER the year is over...But don't do anything to disturb what seems to be a great deal of positive chemistry over there on 35th and Shields!

Pauly isn't going anywhere this season, unless this team complete falls apart, at the same time Konerko is putting up a .300 40 120 type season.
April 19, 200422 yr First of all, Lee is going to be making 9 Mill next year. Jim Edmonds is making 9 Mill, just to give you a little comparison. His value would be cut as a 1B -- it's an offense-loaded position and he would be brutal in the field while he learns it. Secondly, Odalis Perez is clearly breaking out. I would do the swap in a second -- it would push Wright out of rotation and make Garland and Show one of the best #4 and #5 pitchers in AL. With the remaining 3 Mill saved on the deal (and some prospects of course), I would try to get either a Palmeiro-type bat at the deadline or a big closer. Then Reiny opens up the wallet at said deadline and gets the Sox a Brown-type ace at a prorated cost (and some more prospects), thus pushing Perez to a more suitable #4 spot, with Show as a long relief lefty. We're set for the playoffs.

April 19, 200422 yr Oh woe is us ....terms of Koney's contract: $6.25 million in 2003 $8.00 million in 2004 +500K if traded $8.75 million in 2005 +500K if traded The worst contract negotiation in Kenny's young career. Koney would be lucky to get 1/2 that from any other team.

A-f***ing-men(though it would be hard to get the Kevin Brown at the deadline, considering he is wearing Yankee pinstripes, but I do understand what you mean...get a RJ/Halladay/Hudson type pitcher...however, I would also take Piniero/[Kip]Wells/Jason Schmidt too...I want a quality-ass pitcher who is going to throw the s*** out of the ball come postseason time. A 1-2-3 is an important thing which is why I felt our shot last year was so good had we gone to the playoffs...silly me, I brought up 2003 again ).
