April 22, 200422 yr Vazquez has a tremendous 12-6 curve, and he's right on the money with it. We need to play good defense, because I think we'll be lucky to get 4 runs.
April 22, 200422 yr Good righthanded pitchers can shut down the Sox bats. Good pitchers can generally shut down bats - that's what makes them good pitchers....
April 22, 200422 yr At least the Sox weren't shut down by a rookie pitcher making his MLB debut. Teeing off on Tues. on Graman and Proctor erased a few demons from last year. Now they have to find ways to score on tough pitchers, esp RHP.
April 22, 200422 yr Good pitchers can generally shut down bats - that's what makes them good pitchers.... This is true. However, I think what Yas was getting at was that a good right-hander, when on, can completely shut down the Sox, and a right-hander when he does not have his best stuff(but still good stuff) can still limit the Sox to pretty little damage. If a lefty does not have his A-stuff, the Sox can hit him, and in some cases, they can hit him hard I do understand you are joking...but I figured I may as well make the point anyways. You can now see one of the reasons why we need a real good lefty bat in the middle of the lineup, be it Delgado, Edmonds, Griffey Jr, etc.

But then again, we can put up damn near double digit runs against Roger Clemens. We've done it a couple times over the past few years. But then we get shut out by the likes of Paul Abbott and Joe Mays.

April 22, 200422 yr I don't think that one good lefty bat, unless his name is Barry Bonds, is going to single-handedly win games against good right-handed pitchers for us.
April 22, 200422 yr I don't think that one good lefty bat, unless his name is Barry Bonds, is going to single-handedly win games against good right-handed pitchers for us. No. But it will help a whole hell of a lot, no?
April 23, 200422 yr We still have a couple of months, then we can start evaluating our situation. A left-handed bat would be nice no doubt, but let's wait and see how everyone's doing. I think another starter might be more important at this point.

My father watched the Vasquez on the YES netwok. During the game, Jim Kaat was talking about the fact that a pitcher can get into a groove very easily by facing guys hitting from one side of the plate. During a string of right handed hitters, a pitcher is suddenly facing a LH hitter than can hurt you and then the pitcher has to change what he's doing, change his approach, start thinking. I think Kaat pitched long enough to at least have a clue to what he's talking about. This is where one good LH hitter would really make a difference.
