Weaver may not go #1

Featured Replies

Not sure who'd be interested in this, but was listenting to the local sports radio station (its the Padres station) and they were talking about how the Padres are leaning to taking J.D. Drew's younger brother and converting him into a centerfielder.

Personally I'd think they would be fools to pass up on Nienemann...thats who I would take #1 overall, but I see the allure of taking Weaver because he should be pretty good. He seems like a safe pick who will be good, probably not a total star, but pretty good.

Wow thats crazy, I agree 100% on who you think should go number 1. Niemann I think is going to be the best pitcher out of any in this draft. At 6'9 260 and with a power arm that throws 95-96 into late innings, I think he has the build, and the length to create alot of problems for hitters. A taller Bartolo Colon, or a right handed Randy Johnson as some have called him.

Taking Stephen Drew number 1 would be a big mistake to me. I've seen him play a few times and haven't been real impressed. Sure, he's solid in every aspect, but his power numbers aren't very good and don't seem to project very well. His infield defense was solid, but again not spectacular. I had heard San Diego wanted to draft him to become Khalil Greene's DP partner for the future.

Does anyone know much about the mental make up of the younger Weaver? The thing that has killled Jeff all along is his temper, and his lack of mental toughness. Is Jared any different, or are we looking at a 2nd Weaver-flop?

I think they have Gatreau for 2nd base and he's supposed to be a real stud. One of my best friends worked for the Lake Elsinore Storm last year and he was telling me how freaking good Gatreau is. The guy absolutely rakes the ball and is going to be up there pretty quick along side Greene.

Well Jared is about as poised as it gets on the mound. Then again, his bigger brother always was pretty poised and in control when on the mound as well.

I have never heard any complaints about his attitude though. I think Weaver went downhill when he joined the Tigers and just kept losing and he just couldn't handle it. Weaver is starting to look like he's coming out of his funk though. He's looked really good at times for the Dodgers.

Jared will be a good pitcher though. I think at his best he'll be Tim Hudson (which says something) and at his worse he won't be bad. He'll likely fall somewhere in between and be a 2nd to 3rd guy in the rotation.

Gautreau hit .242 with 14 HR and 55 RBI in AA last year and is hitting .226 with 6 HR and 18 RBI while repeating AA so far this year. Sounds like the Pads may be questioning his status.

I'm starting to read up on the draft, Jason, and reading this board is helping a lot as well. I wish more college was on TV...i caught a bunch of the Big 12 Championship tournament on FSN this weekend, that was very fun to watch.

Gammons has this to say in his article from yesterday:

The Padres may now go for Florida State's Stephen Drew as Khalil Greene's eventual double-play partner, but if they should turn back to Jared Weaver, here is one man's opinion -- 15 years from now, Vanderbilt left-hander Jeremy Sowers will have more major-league victories than any of the high-ceiling righties, from Weaver to Old Dominion's Justin Verlander to Rice's Jeff Niemann and Phil Humber

What's your opinion of Sowers? Of course, i don't expect you to agree with him, just want to see what you know. Gammons has some real terrible opinions a lot of the time

Gautreau has been poor at best throughout his stint in the Padres organization. As of now he's hitting an impressive .216 in AA after hitting around .250 in Mobile last year. If anything, Josh Barfield is the Padres 2B of the future, but even he is struggling mightily in AA.

Beat you to it Cerb.... lol

Sowers is very good. He may also be the closest pitcher to the Majors. His command is A+ and he knows how to pitch. He throws 86-89 with a curveball and a slider and a solid changeup, although he doesn't throw it a lot.

I saw him pitch Wednesday against Georgia and he gave up 3 hits and no walks while striking out 10 in a complete game shutout.

If you had to compare him to one major league player, who would it be?

Also, how did you catch that game? I really wish i could catch more college games before the World Series...and the only team i could watch back at school was mediocre at best Illini.

Agreed. Plus, Barfield has more upside and is only 21 yrs. old in AA. Gautreau is 24 yrs. old and in AA. Also they seem to be given Barfield more at-bats as well (192) from Gautreaus' (159). Barfield also makes less errors but has less power. Easily workable though. BTW, Barfield is hitting .250 Gautreau is hitting .226 but has 32 less at-bats. Here are their Stats here. :)

Scott Boras being Jared Weaver's agent is killin his draft value right now. San Diego definitely should go Niemann with their 1st pick, he'd hav a lot of success in the future at PETCO Park, and they'll need some good starters with Peavy's injury problems and Wells retiring soon.

You take an everyday player over a pitcher as #1 pick unless he is like Prior.

Thats awesome, I hope Weaver's ass falls just so Borass can stop ruining the game.

We can only hope, Boras is single handledy tryin to ruin to state of baseball today. ;)

s***, my bad, Bartfield was who I was thinking of. But didn't even look up his statts this year. I just hear the Padres announcers rave about him.
