What Reliever Should Replace Koch?

Featured Replies

Jeff Bajenaru. His 95 ph fastball, solid control and big strikeout numbers should fit in setup for the Sox. With Politte struggling as well, a minor leaguer should come up and replace Burke after interleague is done.

While a trade is more than likley in the future [a guy like Jason Grimsley would be decent], the Sox need to try getting some outs from their minor league arms until then.

If Arnaldo Munoz does well in his call up, he is likely to stick around even if the Sox acquire a SP. As then Munoz can pitch out of the bullpen--long relief, short set up, 2 innings a pop. It would relieve some of the pressure on Marte.

Yet the biggest need now is in RHP set up. Politte is scaring me. Lets give manhands a try. He seems like the only one who has the potential to dominate in the bullpen, at least of guys close to the show.

I'd say Majewski has the nod ahead of Baj or they could go with one of the veterans in Charlottes bullpen (like Santiago). Still, I think Baj is a possibility. Another possibility is the Sox keeping Munoz up with the club out of the pen, but thats only realistic if he's going to get playing time (thats after teh Sox acquire a 5th starter).

I am alittle concerned about having 2 rookies coming out of the pen. Cotts and then maybe Munoz. I would rather them trade or sign a Veteran from somewhere.

are we talking about who a new reliever will be to take the roster space or who the new closer will be to take the vacated role?

We already have two veterans who have trouble getting through one inning -- Mike Jackson and Cliff Politte. And we used to have three. Who cares about veteran status.

Yup. If we have to rely on rookies to get good innings out of the pen, so be it.

What does baj have to do to be called up? He has a 1.05 ERA, 38K to 6 walks.

He would make a great set up guy, at least he can get people out! He could replace Botch any day- with an out pitch like the SLUTTER what else can you ask for? :bringit

the SLUTTER

I once dated a girl with the name nickname.

It didn't last long.

If he's the best guy available in the minors, then bring him up!

The only other guy I would make an argument for is Wunsch. He had maybe three solid outings before he was sent to AAA and the DL. I don't think he's given up a run. Hopefully he can get healthy and contribute as the 7th inning set-up.

I have a sneaking suspicion Kelly's time with the Sox is done.

What does it say when a team desperate for bullpen help like the Marlins will trade for a strugglin Billy Koch, but Wunsch passed thru waivers and nobody wanted to claim him. ;)

Considering Koch was getting $6.5 million and Wunsch is earning $800K, it speaks volumns.

hadn't thought about that - that staggers the mind - at least my mind - and I am easily staggered -

That is a mindboggling thought, consider Wunsch was so effective last year and Koch was, well, not. There has to be something seriously wrong with Kelly or him being the union rep has gotten him in some very hot water.

That couldn't the reason, could it? The Sox don't play that s***.

How old is Majewski? I know he's been a Rule 5 guy for a few years now. That said, Baj has to have more upside and a better future [and present] then Gary.

I agree on Munoz. If he pitches well [throws strikes, gets K's] he could hang around in the pen when a 5th starter comes in. If Cotts doesn't get his act together he could find himself in AAA, if Munoz can do what Cotts had been doing well.

Still, RH set up is lacking, with Pollitte not finding the strike zone, Jackson looking tired, and Koch gone. At least one vet should come in via trade. But why not try a rookie who's dominating like Baj before the deadline to see what arms the sox have available. Santiago would be a decent Jackson replacement, a GB type pitcher rather than a K guy. [i wish MLB was like the NBA and used the DL frequently to try out new guys]
