CSF
Seeing how last year's trades cost the Sox considerable prospects in the farm system (Rupe, Francisco, Ring & Webster especially), maybe KW is being cautious this time around with who he possibly gives up for that 5th starter or extra arm for the bullpen. Honestly, I can't blame him. Especially if they're unable to sign these guys long-term because they don't have intentions of staying or that they're agents are in their ear telling them to do something else. Ultimately, last year's deals, while great during the season to help this team out, still didn't result in a division title and all the acquisitions left elsewhere for more money or to start completely anew. The Sox were left holding the bag and absolutely nothing to show for it. You have to give up something in order to get something, but to give up the farm again for someone who may/may not stay will wind up putting the Sox right back where they started. I know KW has said nobody is "untouchable", but with the farm system being put back in place, I hope it's not as quickly depleted again. Harry Chappas
Farm systems are for trading for proven players with rare exceptions. None of those players you mentioned are those exceptions, nor are Reed, Borchard, Honel, or Wing.
Gene Honda Civic
KW's just fine. Other GM's aren't willing to trade big name guys just yet. He'll do fine and not overpay. July 25, 2002 Traded Ray Durham and cash to Oakland Athletics in exchange for Jon Adkins. July 28, 2002 Traded Kenny Lofton to San Francisco Giants in exchange for Felix Diaz and Ryan Meaux. July 29, 2002 Traded Sandy Alomar to Colorado Rockies in exchange for Enemencio Pacheco July 31, 2002 Traded Bob Howry to Boston Red Sox in exchange for Franlin Francisco and Byeong An. July 1, 2003 Traded Roberto Alomar to New York Mets in exchange for Edwin Almonte. Traded 3 players to be named later to Texas Rangers in exchange for Carl Everett; Texas Rangers received Frankie Francisco, Josh Rupe and Anthony Webster (July 25, 2003). Turned Bobby Howry plus prospects into Jurassic Carl July 6, 2003 Traded D'Angelo Jimenez to Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Scott Dunn. July 30, 2003 Traded Gary Glover, Scott Dunn and Tim Bittner to Anaheim Angels in exchange for Scott Schoeneweis and Doug Nickle. Turns D'angelo Jimenez and Glover into Schoenweiss Still has Diaz, Pacheco, Meaux, and Adkins. Overall in the deadline type deals KW has done quite well. Xero
According to that, they traded Roberto Alomar to the Mets for Edwin Almonte
danman31
The point remains that it's only June and the deadline is July 31st. It's probably not that KW isn't trying to make a deal, but other teams are waiting for the deadline to come. Most teams are reluctant before the deadline because they feel other offers could come closer to the deadline.
