Losing a stud catcher

Just to point this out...here are the splits from the starting catchers of the last several World Champion teams.

Year Player Team AVG HR RBI OBP SLG% OPS
2003 Ivan Rodriguez Florida .297 16 85 .369 .474 .843
2002 Bengie Molina Anaheim .245 5 47 .274 .322 .596
2001 Damian Miller Arizona .271 13 47 .337 .424 .761
2000 Jorge Posada New York .287 28 86 .417 .527 .943
1999 Jorge Posada New York .245 12 57 .341 .401 .742
1998 Jorge Posada New York .268 17 63 .350 .475 .825
1997 Charles Johnson Florida .250 19 63 .347 .454 .801

Just to prove that you do not need a stud catcher to win a World Series. Having a catcher that can shut down the running game(Molina), or one that calls a good game(or is just fortunate enough to have two of the best pitchers in the league on the same team...either case, Damian Miller 2001), or just flat out having a good supporting cast(Jorge Posada in 98 and 99).

I will miss Big Mo for what he will do in the future. But we needed a pitcher, and the only way we were going to get Garcia from the Yanks was by giving up Big Mo.

Wasn't Girardi and Posada platooning at catcher for the Yankees in 98 and 99? I thought they were, but I could be wrong. Just trying to help out your example as Girardi was just a complementary player that could call a good game and was good defensively.

I've heard that:

-Davis can call a good game.

-Is solid defensively.

-Has a pretty good arm.

First - are these true? I know hiw bat sucks, but he's going to hit ninth in the order. If our offense hinges on if Ben Friggin Davis is able to hit or not, then we're in a boatload of trouble.

That is all I want from my catcher. Be a threat to throw out runners. Call a good game. Be smart defensively. Get on base from time to time. No need to be at a Mark Johnson-like .190 average, but .230-.250 while drawing a share of walks would be nice.

Yes, those are true.

I'm sure I read in Rotoworld a few weeks ago that most experts thought Davis would break out this year, as it takes a while for catchers to hit well offensively. I'll see if I can find that.

Essentially yes.

1998 - Posada had 358 ABs, Girardi has 254

1999 - Posada had 379 ABs, Girardi had 209

Yeah, those look even enough to me to be considered a platoon.

Same thing happened in Arizona in 2001. Miller had 380 ABs, and Moeller/Barajas had 162 ABs.

This is not saying you can't win with a stud catcher. It's just saying that you can win with or without a stud catcher. Having a good platoon is what matters most.

Here is his major news from this year,

Jan. 15, 2004 - 6:59 pm et

Mariners signed catcher Ben Davis to a one-year, $1.4 million contract.

Davis gets a $400,000 raise after a disappointing 2003 season.

Mar. 9, 2004 - 11:40 am et

Mariners manager Bob Melvin hasn't been happy with catcher Ben Davis' play-calling this spring.

Melvin has hinted that he'd like Davis to supplant Dan Wilson as the starting catcher, but it may not happen.

Jun. 6, 2004 - 4:12 pm et

Ben Davis is batting .308 during a 12-game hitting streak at Triple-A Tacoma.

Davis might soon reclaim a spot as Dan Wilson's backup.

That's like exactly what I want from Davis.

If he can do that, we have a steal.

Jas(or anyone for that matter)...do you know who Davis has been compared to offensively(if he were to reach his potential, that is)?

Mike Lieberthal, and if he lives up to that potentional that could make this deal look alot better.
