Baker's Comments before the series

Controlled Chaos

"Our goal is to beat the Sox, but our goal is also to get to the playoffs. Our season isn't (based on) just beating the Sox. Hell, we don't want to lose, but our goal is the World Series. Didn't the Sox beat us last year? And what happened?"

That sounds to me like he was prepared to lose the series ahead of time. Everyone's goal is to get to the playoffs and the world series. That's my fricken goal too, but it doesn't mean I'm not getting up for every series....especially a crosstown rivalary. Just cause they lost to the sox last year and made it to the NLCS, doesnt mean it's ok to lose this year. It's a dumb comment by a dumb ass manager. By us beating the Cubs the Sox are now only 1 game out of first and by the Cubs losing they are 5 games out of first. I'm quite sure they needed the wins. It was a stupid comment for Baker to make and his team played passionless becuase of it. Not that I'm complaining....

I don't get the big deal about that guy at all. I mean I didn't see a lot when he was with the Giants, but now that I hear and read about him on the news or in the paper...I'm not impressed with what he does. I don't know what makes him a great manager....

The guy kind of showed emotion after Sunday’s game. He was talking about how his players weren’t running the bases right, they tried to come back, but it didn’t work.

Hello!! You were playing the White Sox, not the A’s.

BTW, if St. Louis gets a W today, the Cubs will be 6 games behind. Ouch.

It's not an either/or proposition.

It's important to make the playoffs.

Bu it's also important to somehow find the way to stun the Cubs and send them into 1999-type tail-spin. God knows, those losers in Houston could use any help they can get.

Our playoffs run will only be magnified by their arms falling off (hello Kerry and Mark) and hopefully lots of people tanking in the 2nd half (I am looking at you Barret, Clement, Lee, Alou, Sosa, Walker and Patterson).

*says prayer*

The 2001 tailspin was a good one, too. Oh man, I loved that one.

IMO Dusty's positives is a manager is his ability to keep his team at a happy-medium throughout the whole season. (Bernstien said it this morning.) What I mean by that, they will never get too high for a game ( ), or too low for a game. Obviously, they'll suffer in games like these, but they may do better against teams that you 'should' beat, like Montreal, Pittsburg. I don't know if that is holding true this year, though...

Overall, I don't like him as a manager. He leaves his starters out there way too long during the early part of the season (i.e. Zambrano throwing 128 on Saturday), and he doesn't know how to handle a bullpen. That's JMHO, though.

It's just typical. Cub fans always claim the Sox series means absolutely nothing, but I only hear them say this recently, since we're always winning the crosstown series. I wonder what these same people would say if the Cubs ever win the season crosstown series.....

But anyways....I enjoy being 1 up, and them being 5 back. Wasn't it this same way last year? The Cubs were in 1st place before we met them, and they ended the crosstown games in 3rd place.

Careful with the tailspin talk guys.  The baseball gods can be quite peevish at times.  Let's beat them this weekend, then talk some s***.

good advice -

if we lose 3 in wrigley, especially if we stumble in Minnesota first, our moods will not be sanguine.

Not the time to talk trash.

Baker (who I don't like at all as a manager) said what he had to say after a 1-2 series - what else could he say as a manager who has to keep his team motivated and focused? Blather like that, I wouldn't overly attach importance to it.

If we go 3-0 or 2-1 in Wrigley after doing well in Minnesota, we'll still have a lot of season left to play before we begin talking big. I would love to 6-0 in our next six games, of course, because that would be such a momentum boost to our guys.

He said it before the series even started. I could agree with ya, if he said it after, but he didn't. He kinda took the approach of the typical cub fan nonsense about it not being important. Which is bulls***...a win is a win...and they needed it as bad as we did.

Maybe CWSGuy406/Bernstein is right and Dusty's approach is just to stay on an even keel. Well if that makes a great manager....Then ladies and gentlemen, I give you your next Hall of Fame Manager inductee........Jerry Manuel.

No - the problem with Manuel was, not beating the bad teams. We beat the Yankees last year. We could handle all of the 'playoff' caliber teams. It was those pesky Tigers who kicked our ass last year - why we didn't make the playoffs.

If that were true, then Cubs would have skipped Rusch's start that fell on the off-day, and would have had Clement-Prior-Zambrano in a HUGE (mostly for Houston losers) series against the Astros........leaving their 5-6-4 pitchers Maddux-Rusch-Clement to face the White Sox in Wrigley.

Instead, they prefer Rusch pitches tonight against the Astros, which means Zambrano pitches against us.

Glad to see where Dusty's priorities lie. f***er.
