So by hell or high water one guy will get sent home packin'. and the Republicans have control, so Bush would be re-elected... the Republicans also look poised to take over the Senate, which means Cheney would join him

And if the election was close enough in that state, they may abstain from voting. And you have to get 26 votes to win. If neither gets 26, then the winner of the vice president run off in the senate takes over on an interm basis.
