The team faces a tough call on oft-injured righthander Tony Armas Jr., who could be too expensive for the Expos in arbitration but attractive to other clubs in a trade.

 

He was 2-4 with a 4.88 ERA in 2004. Most likely we'll stay away due to his arm problems, although he did win 12 games in 2002. Now Carl Pavano flourished when he left Montreal, I wonder if Armas Jr. could do the same?

Maybe Montreal is still smitten with Sox busts (the Jeff Liefer syndrome), in which case it wouldn't be a bad deal. But he's barely pitched the past 2 seasons, so he's not worth any more than that. There'd probably be a betting line in Vegas on the success of his physical.

I'd take a chance on him. Look at Chris Carpenter last season. Why not look at him as our number 5 right now. If we get a big time name, then move him to the pen or deal JG. I think he could help this club.

I've always like Armas Jr. Though I'd love to get Zach Day if we could.

He got a little over $2 mil this past season, so it'll be whatever the arbitrator decides to give him. But I can't imagine he'd get much of a raise given the lack of playing time, plus the numbers he put up last season.

Plus to get him out of that atmosphere. They were they traveling circus. I think a change in scenery could be a great boost.

Armas was only hurt last yr by my recollection, at least the first time w/ an arm injury. His trajectory was compared to Javier Vazquez before then. If it meant a few mid level prospects, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

washington is going to increase payroll, i heard by about $15 mil. they need starting pitching in a bad way. armas has a lot of potential. i see no reason they would trade him, especially if it were only for prospects.

You're probably right, but it depends how frustrated they are with his injuries and what the new GM thinks of him. I can see a team deciding after 2 mostly lost years that they'll never be able to count on a guy.

This would be the type of proactive move that team like the Yankees, Cardinals, and Red Sox make because they'll take on $2 million. I would love the move and would still look for another starter. He'd be an exceelent insurance policy. I don't think he'd take elite prospects so this could be an avenure to explore.

In a thread midseason, I suggested acquiring Tony Armas Jr. I watched him briefly in the Red Sox minor league system and followed both his and Pavano's careers thoroughly following the Pedro Martinez trade.

 

If he stays healthy, the kid can be an excellent pitcher.

I've long been a fan of Armas Jr and I could definately see him brekaing out if he stayed healthy. Showed way more then Pavano ever did in Montreal, but at the same time I think some other team will give up something solid for him.

I too have been a fan of him, and I too think he's Pavano in the making in terms of breaking out.

I could definately see Armas breaking out. He's got a good arm and can pitch well. He can be a little erratic with his control at times, and that will probably get him into trouble, but I could see him becoming a pretty solid pitcher with some team next year.

 

This is, of course, assuming he can stay healthy.

I would be very happy with a rotation of Buehrle, Garcia, Contreras, Garland, Armas. Why Garland would be replaced by Armas is beyond me.

I'm not happy with that rotation by any means. Armas could very easily be hurt for the year and the Sox are depending on Jason Grilli or Felix Diaz out of the #5 spot for the year, and I do not want to even risk that.

 

Armas could be a solid pitcher. It won't be for the White Sox.

The way I see it, if someone gets injured by midseason, Brandon McCarthy will likely be the guy we see and I have a lot of faith in Bmac.
