According to the Seattle Times, the Mariners have offered Jaret Wright a contract believed to be worth $15 million over three years.

That's unlikely to get a deal done. Wright figures to receive at least $18 million over three years, and if the Yankees get involved, the price could go even higher. Dec. 1 - 3:58 am et

I don't like this at all. Wright's guaranteed a third year here...We're only offering two with an option right? Damn.

Then again, this was in today's NY Daily News:

The Yankees continue to talk to the Diamondbacks about a trade for Randy Johnson, their top target this winter.

They also are interested in Jaret Wright, who was 15-8 for the Braves last season. The Mariners have made Wright a multi-year offer worth $5 million per year, which is what the Yankees figure his market value is, too. The Yankees probably wouldn't offer him more than a two-year deal.

By the way if mariners are offering a three yr deal means Peter Gammons lied because he said they offer a 2-yr deal where whitesox were offering three. Quite frankily peter gammons is terrible source to rely on about baseball players signing anywhere. Whitesox are intrested maybe but to me I believe the mariners are ahead of them.

Maybe the Seattle paper is wrong, maybe Gammons is wrong. I don't believe either of them "lied".

I just don't understand why we are throwing money at Wright for one good year. I would rather have Leiter for the 2 years (if he would come here) as an leadership type role on the staff.  Might even be able to help Marky become a better pitcher.

I actually agree with you here. Not just as a leadership role, but also because he's a terrific left-handed pitcher. Like Wright, has a good IP/HR ratio. Less than one HR every 10 innings.

Alright...we have three pitchers locked up to 2006. And Garland just signed his one year contract and if he doesn't get traded, he might get another extension. So, you would have four of the five starters locked up. That's called continuity. And continuity is good.

I could just see it kenny offers 2 year and option of a third year. Mariners make it three deal like paper says and then outbids whitesox. Kenny gets fustrated and says we always get outbid.

KW then blames the fans and media for ruining his potential Wright deal and states that he is going into stealth mode in an effort to "fly under the radar" for the rest of the White Sox offseason :rolly .

Interesting...seems like those dollar figures and years would get it done. I wonder what moves follow this cause I would like that rotation without any more moves but the bullpen dillema still needs to be answered.

Monetarily it seems a little steep, but like I said, if he's healthy for the tenure, he's a great deal. You also have to like the fact that he doesn't give up many homers.

Offman reported this morning on Boers and Bernstein that Wright was K-Dub's primary target and they were prepared to give him around 20 mil for 3 years, followed by Perez, Clement, El Duke, and Russ Ortiz.

I like that order too. Perez or Wright, PLEASE!!!

BTW, I thought the Score was reporting last night that this Wright stuff was all BS. :rolly

Haha, thats exactly what I was thinking. Maybe the score was just waiting for some type of validation.

I'm assuming Wright is gonna get offered arb regardless by the Braves. He was cheap so its not like he'd get a huge payraise via arb, since I think the most you can get is a doubling of your contract.

Also since I Think the compensation is based on a few years play and not just one year, the Sox may not have to give up as much for signing him.

Anyone know what type of player he is in the compensation picture?

Also agree with that order. El Duque over Ortiz...fine by me. Ortiz is crap unless he suddenly develops control. By crap I just mean mediocre and paying big money ain't worth it.

Wright is a type A free agent. So does that mean we won't lose a pick if we sign him after 12-7? Does Atlanta get a compensation pick as long as they offer arbitration no matter when he signs?

As long as they offer arbit, they get a pick. We pick 15th in the draft, so we can't lose our first round pick in the draft.

I don't think King George will let Leiter's arm leave the city of New York. I thought he was going to end up back with the Mets, but as soon as they stopped their talks, the Yanks swept in and are sure to make him a very, how should we say, generous offer...just my opinion.

Since the Sox pick 15th and not 16th, they will not lose their first roudn pick. Instead the Sox will give up their 2nd round pick and the Braves will get a comp pick between the 1st and 2nd round.

Even if they signed Wright in January?

I'm not used to this "losing a draft pick" thing because the Sox never sign any big name free agents. ;)

Do you have a listing of the NL free agents? I posted a link in "FA Resource" of the AL players and what class they are. But with Wright's poor 2003, I'd think he'd be a Type B FA.

IIRC a player has to accept or decline arbit. If the player accepts then they only can negotiate with their team. If they decline, then the team gets their pick from the signing team, no matter now long it takes them to sign the player.

Well if the on Dec. 7th the Braves decline to offer him arbitration (or any time before then) then the Sox could sign him on Dec. 8th and not give up anything.

However, I find it extremely unlikely that the Braves wouldn't offer him arbitration. The reason being if Wright accepted arbitration he would get less money then any of the teams are offering and it would only be a one year deal. Plus the Braves would be getting good value.

The Braves know he won't accept anyway so this way they assure they get something for him.

I pretty much guarantee the Braves offer him arbitration, so whoever signs him is gonna be giving up something.

Remember, a 2nd round pick lost could mean the Sox use a 3rd rounder on a guy that slides or have more money to toss to a 1st round pick that slides (due to signing issues).

And one thing you can say about JR is he seems to always give his GM's and player personel people a good budget on draft choices.
