Angels sign Cuban INF/OF Kendry Morales to six-year contract

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Angels have agreed to terms with INF/OF Kendry Morales, who defected from Cuba last June, on a six-year (2005-2010) Major League contract. The agreement is conditional upon Morales, as a Cuban national, receiving clearance to enter into a contract with the Angels from the U. S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). This announcement was made by Angels' Vice President & General Manager Bill Stoneman.

"Kendry projects to be a strong hitter in the middle of a Major League lineup," said Stoneman. "As a young player, he was a major force on an very good Cuban National team."

Morales, 21, is a switch-hitter who plays first base, third base and outfield. In 2003, he was the first baseman and cleanup hitter for Cuba in the World Cup international tournament in Havana. His grand slam helped secure Cuba's 6-3 victory over Taiwan in the finals.

In the 2003 Cuban baseball season, Morales batted .391 with nine home runs and 42 RBI for the national champion Industrialists. In 2002, at the age of 19, he was the first teenager to star for Cuba's National Team since Omar Linares. He posted 21 home runs and 82 RBI in 85 games that season with the Industrialists. He was banned from baseball in Cuba in 2004 for attempting to leave the country.

Morales is currently in the Dominican Republic.

Why couldn't Moreno buy the White Sox?

With a six-year contract, he BETTER be good.

No terms releaed, but I heard that his agent was looking for a Mark Tiexiera type deal.

Because he's name them the Los Angeles White Sox.

f***ing Moreno

:lolhitting

You better send in your letters...Would you want a team from the OC using that great LA name ;) :P

There's another sign that Moreno and Co. aren't exactly too high on Kotchman.

According to jayson stark, they won't trade Kotchman for RJ. Or maybe it's a ploy. That's a lot of outfielders on one team.

Last year Kochman wasn't untouchable and I doubt he is this year either. Now McPherson and Santana they aren't going anywhere.

Kochman's gonna be a good one though.
